Basically this tends to be a design fault where light units are made to look good without regard for the fact that they
1. are an essential safety item
2. needs to operate reliably when exposed to the weather

Renovo do indeed sell a product called plastic window polish which has some glowing reviews on their website. I cant personally comment as I've not used that particular product but their range for Vinyl Hoods is excellent.

I spend about 6 weeks a year in the UK visiting Friends and driving mostly B routes, back roads and lanes. In fact as I live on this small Island and walk to work... many years I drive more in the UK than I do in the US...

I try to hire a car for each trip that is not sold in the US (last spring was a MG-F and last fall was a Rover 45)and this fall I was thinking of hiring either a M-benz 'A' class or a 'Smart' car.

I am having no luck finding either (this is for for my 2 1/2 weeks with a pick up mid Sept at Gatwick and a drop off near Chester) I did find one place that said they hired Smart on the web site but they said they did not do one way rentals( I had the feeling that they just did it as a tool to aid sales)... and I found one place that said they had a few M-Benz "A" types but they would only hire a 'class' and I could end up with a Ford or a Fiat...

An Email to HJ brought me a link to www.easyrentacar.com but they also do only one way and their London locations are all centre city... (though their rates are low enough I could almost park it for the 2 weeks I will be on a narrow boat before my return to LGW)

Any Ideas on my search?
Cheers

PS: BTW I read Honst John and the rest of the motoring section in the ET each week and it brings back the years I spent driving in the UK while I was in the service in the 60's I had a 1961 Austin Healy 3000 that I loved and drove over 100,000 miles in 3 years... Read more

Oh yes Avis say they still do the 620 Rover (how long has it been out of production?)....the Cannal trip is out of Chirk with Black Prince and counter clockwise around the 4 Counties with a side trip to either the Leek and Caldon or to Chester.

I have and R registered Honda Civic 1.5 LSI with the vtec engine. From new I have had problems with engaging the reverse gear. Honda have had three attempts to rectify the fault. New clutch after only 600 miles with a skimming of the flywheel under warranty. Still not fixed, Honda official position is as follows.
Their gearboxes on all civic's do not have syncromesh in reverse gear so sometimes will not engage in reverse without.

1. Moving the car and trying to select the reverse gear again.
2. Changing to first gear going into neutral and then trying to select reverse.
3. Waiting three seconds after stopping before attempting to select reverse.

NO honest it's not a wind up this is what I am supposed to believe and swallow.
Could it be however that a £2000 + replacement was not an option under any circumstances.

I am going to a transmission specialist next week to hear what his verdict is.
Has anybody had similar problems.
I would be grateful of any advice. HONDA UK are just not interested in resolving this problem. Read more

Though I accept that mike's problems with his Honda are real and an immense irritation all this talk and complaints of not engaging reverse without a crunch result in a wry smile.

Who remembers the technique for engaging a non synchro first, the recommended technique was to select second and then straight into first. Still something I occasionally do if first is a bit recalcitrant on a cold morning.

Are we really so molly coddled today, synchro on reverse! Wish I had that on my autotest mini!

nearly forgot to mention I found their own finance on the high side c15% much better deals around.

Also unless you are buying something that will need a warranty their "own" warranty did not excite me, remember in most cases if you buy nearly new there should be a manufacturers warranty left on it.

Also when I collected I found that the VED actually cost less than charged on the invoice, a bit of moaning on my part led to being given a chit to "collect fuel to the value of" from the nearby supermarket filling station.

Also they were vague about servicing carried our before collection, it seemed to be perfunctory from the description the salesman gave me esp with regards to used. I bought "new" and was told as the car had just had its PDI "elsewhere" there was "no need". Result v.careful inspection before I left the premises, but that just common sense anywhere you buy.

as ever

What's this latest fad with cars that look like telephone boxes? Do the makers think we all stand up to travel?
The old Honda Civic was quite nifty, but the new one is just AWFUL!

Am I alone in getting really annoyed by drivers on motorways who change from outside to middle lane, 'undertake' 1 or 2 cars and cut back to outside lane. Watched a van on M40 today perform this move several times. He probably 'saved' 20 seconds. It was noticeable how some drivers closed the gap to prevent this happening - that of course is tailgating. Who is talking about deliberately holding them up? I am totally with Bogush here, metaphorically speaking not on the road of course.

We are talking about sharing road space, not one person believing they have priority over others.

Are these same businessmen the people who drive 10 feet behind perhaps flashing their lights and shaking their heads in order to try and make you drive faster, ignoring the fact that to do so removes the safe distance up to the car in front of you. No they are bullying you to move over into a "space" on the left which is probably already less than 2 seconds gap, and would be 2 x 1 second gaps if you moved into it.

Nobody wants to hold anyone up, deliberately or accidentally, have a bit of patience please! You will find life much more enjoyable and it might give some an opportunity to grow up!
