My girlfriend has a 'M' registered Fiesta (1100 I think) which is prone to cutting out when you take your foot off the gas - it does this when the engine is either both cold or warm (though more when it is cold).
In addition, it has more recently developed an odd habit of revving upto about 3000 rpm of it's own accord, sometimes staying there for a few seconds and then dropping back down to normal idle, at othertimes the rev counter needle appears to bounce as the revs drop off and then immediately pick up again, only to drop once more when the 3000 mark is attained. This behaviour is only exhibited when the engine is cold.
Having once owned an old XR2 that did similar things, I suspect that these issues may be the fault of a duff automatic choke. Is anyone in a position to confirm my suspicions - she is taking it to the garage on wed to get it MOT'd and would like to get it fixed then, but is worried about just asking the garage to 'fix it' without having an idea of what may be wrong.
Thanks

I have an 'entertaining' '91 BX 16v which is currently burning a rather large hole in my pocket. Latest thing to go wrong is a reluctance to start - I've changed leads, dizzy cap and plugs and hoped that it would now burst into life at the merest hint of the key being turned in the ignition (as my old corolla used to), but to no avail - I still have to crank it for several seconds before it catches and finally explodes into action.
The only thing I can think of is that the oil may be a little on the thick side (and rather old by the look of it - I've not had the car long but it doesn't look like it's been changed in a while) ie. 20w50, could this be a contributing factor ?
Finally - sorry to be so windy on this, my first post, but I have just returned from a 3 week trip abroad and surprise surprise, the old girl refused to start when I first tried her. Managed to get a jump start to get her going, but the 10 min drive back from the long term parking wasn't enough to charge the battery sufficiently to provide enough juice for a re-start once I got home (despite the engine being fairly warm). The next day I got another jump start and decided to go for a 45 min drive to get the battery charged. I must have covered in in the region of 35-40 miles, but upon parking up and trying a fully warm re-start the battery seemed just as flat as it was before; hardly enough to get the starter motor to spin at all. So, my question is: has leaving the battery uncharged for (possibly) several weeks knackered it so that it doesn't hold any charge, or rather, my alternator is duff and isn't charging the battery ?
All advice appreciated,

Jake,
Have a look at the previous thread "BX charging fault - 11/07/01", use Search to find it.
If you read the posts the subject is well covered including an excellent link to a website with all the battery info you could want.

I can confirm that I've had my Airdlow Battery Conditioner for about 6 years and it's always done the job with no damage to the electrics of any car I'v attached it to. I bought mine at a London Motor Show. It wasn't a freebie.

in view of the tax changes next year, what are the pros and cons of having a company car verses buying your own and claiming back from your company business mileage. Read more
Simon is right for the old tax rules, but i read an article which quoted the inland revenue as saying they expect 200,000 extra company cars on the road as a result of the "new" company car tax rules. The new rules no longer penalise low mileage (under 2500) drivers. As a result they expect drivers, who have the option, to switch from cash to car.
As someone who used to have a company car until the company scrapped the system and now have cash instead and claim direct from the inland revenue at 63p/mile for first 4000 then 36p/mile thereafter, I would take the company car every time. Note this allowance also changes next year (reduced to 45p/mile and 25p/mile)
Depending on your circumstances, the hidden benefits are
1, car replaced every 3 years (varies with company) and you do not have to find the cash or deposit.
2, taxed by company
3, insured by company,
4, serviced at company's expense
5 maintained at company's expense
6 routine items replaced (tyres, etc) at company's expense
7 you may have the option to buy the car at the end of its 3/4 year life at a knock down price.
The downside
1 limited choice of car
2 ?
I am buying a new car in September. I am purchasing it from Edinburgh. What will the new registration begin with and can I choose what the last three digits are? Read more
Edinburgh will be SK/SL/SM/SN/SO then 51 then three random letters. If you want a different reg, you'll have to pay the DVLA.

My parents have an 18-month old Peugeot 306 " Meridian", 15,000 miles, serviced as detailed at a recognised service centre. It's recently started making a knocking sound in the enging bay. Warwick Wright at Brent Cross in London took one "look" at it and said it was a recognised problem and was down to Peugeot to get it fixed. One operation later to replace a belt tightner and it's STILL making the noise. All of a sudden my parents are told that they will have to pay 60% of any repair costs.
60% of what?? parts/labour/vat? Warwick Wright still doesn't know what it is. Can a garage, which is recognised by a respected manufacturer really say "it's down to Peugeot" in one breath and then, without knowing anymore, change their tack and demand 60% of any repair costs?
Would love to hear from anyone who either recognises this problem and who can give some expert guidance or someone who is up on the legal side of such a case
SYMPTOMS: a knocking sound in the engine bay which isn't constant and doesn't seem to get any louder with either speed or revs or when the enging is either hot or cold. Read more
Learnt today that the Police database of Car Insurance is operated by a firm called Experian, read some threads about this mob some weeks ago. Suggestion #1 Carry insurance certificates from now on. Will be nice to know if someone gets booked for no insurance following poor/careless record keeping. Read more
