Renault Kadjar (2015–)

Model History

March 2015

Renault Kadjar officially launched

Powered by small-capacity Renault dCi diesel and TCe petrol engines which perfectly meet today’s demand for downsized power units which lack nothing in performance while delivering exceptional efficiency. Fuel economy and CO 2 figures are as high as 74.3mpg and as low as 99g/km, equalling the best-in-class. There are two- and four-wheel drive versions and manual and automatic transmissions to meet the needs of any buyer. (4WD only available with dCi 130 diesel engine.)

4449mm long x 2058mm wide (with mirrors) x 1613mm high on 2646mm wheelbase

17-inch alloy wheels with 215/60 R17 tyres

19-inch alloy wheels with 225/45 R19 tyres

Up-to-the-minute active safety features will help the driver avoid low-speed accidents, stay in lane on highways, park, see in the dark and remain within speed limits, while the R-Link 2 multimedia system ensures the car is always fully connected to the outside world. The full UK model range, specifications and pricing will be announced closer to the UK on-sale date in the Autumn.

Courtesy handles in the boot release the ‘Easy Break’ 60:40 split rear seats, and the front passenger seat tips forward to form a small table or make space for longer items to be carried.

Two load area configurations are possible, giving either a flat floor or a capacity of 472 litres (seats upright), and the boot can be divided into three areas to prevent items from moving during transit. There is also 30 litres of storage space within the cabin, which provides passenger space on a par with anything in the class.

The Renault Kadjar offers buyers a choice of two dCi diesel engines or one TCe turbocharged petrol unit which demonstrate that off-road capability need not cost the earth. It has fuel economy of up to 74.3mpg and CO 2 emissions as low as 99g/km – equalling the class best. A six-speed EDC dual-clutch automatic gearbox is available with the dCi 110 engine, and with the 1.6dCi diesel engine, Kadjar is available with four-wheel drive.

The dCi 110, with a capacity of 1.5 litres and a power output of 110hp, now has steel pistons which reduce internal friction and reduce CO 2 by three per cent. Fuel economy and CO 2 figures are similar for both the manual and automatic versions.

All-New Kadjar is also available with the 1.6-litre dCi 130 engine, with power and torque figures of 130hp and 320 Nm, and the 1.2-litre TCe petrol unit which, with power and torque outputs of 130hp and 205Nm, produces similar performance to a normally aspirated 2.0-litre unit. It features direct fuel injection and an integrated manifold for outstanding torque at low revs.

All three engines are allied to Renault’s Start & Stop technology to ensure that they use no fuel and emit no CO 2 when the car is stationary in traffic, and are equipped with energy recovery systems which become effective when decelerating or braking.

Other fuel-saving, emissions-reducing technologies include latest-generation high-pressure fuel injection systems, low inertia turbochargers, friction reduction and the Renault Driving eco 2 functions to help the driver adopt a more efficient driving style. All three meet EU6 emissions regulations, which has entailed the fitting of a NOx trap and particulate filter to the diesels.

Kadjar also features a number of aerodynamic aids which reduce CO 2 emissions by 4g/km at typical motorway speeds. They include wind tunnel-honed wheel rims, door mirrors, spoilers, underbody fairings; vents to reduce turbulence in the wheel arches; and active flaps which ensure that engine cooling is provided only as necessary.

Kadjar has 190mm of ground clearance and approach and departure angles of 18 and 25 degrees respectively, ensuring outstanding all-roads capability. Two-wheel-drive versions will be available with Renault’s Extended Grip traction control system so that they, too, can venture further off-road than their drive layout might suggest. They also be available with 17-inch Mud and Snow tyres with a specific tread pattern (depending on final individual market specifications).

The 1.6dCi four-wheel-drive models use the Renault-Nissan Alliance Electronic Traction Control (ETC) system, which drives a coupler to deliver torque to the wheels according to speed and level of grip. A rotary switch gives the driver access to three different driving modes. The selected mode is displayed on the dashboard.

‘LOCK’ places the transmission in four-wheel drive and transfers 50 per cent of torque to the rear. It functions at speeds of up to 25mph and is recommended for rough, uneven or low-grip conditions.

‘AUTO’ automatically distributes torque as necessary, and can transmit 50 per cent to the rear.

‘2WD’ locks out the rear wheels and is the best setting for dry, grippy roads.

February 2018

Renault reduces warranty from four years to three years

Renault models ordered and registered from 1 February 2018 are covered by a warranty package for up to three years from date of first registration. The first two years unlimited mileage, followed by a further one year limited to a total mileage of 60,000 (100,000 miles for Koleos, Zoe and LCV vehicles).

Models registered up to and including 31 January 2018 are still covered by a four-year warranty package. The first two years unlimited mileage and the third and fourth years are limited to 100,000 miles.

August 2018

New 1.3 TCe engine introduced

The 1.2 TCe Renault engine is replaced in the Kadjar with the new 1.3 direct injected 4-cylinder petrol engine first seen in the revamped Mercedes Benz A-Class. (In the A-Class it develops 163PS and 250Nm torque.) This is also reported to be the case for the Nissan Qashqai. The 1.2 TCe has been dropped from the Dacia Duster. Thought to have not been sublitted for WLTP testing.

September 2018

Renault Kadjar revamped

New features include a wider grille with new chrome inserts. Top trim levels gain a shark fin antenna. 2019 Kadjar is available with two new types of 17- and 19-inch wheels, along with three new colours: Oural Green, Iron Blue and Highland Grey.

The central part of the dashboard has a new multimedia touch screen with capacitive technology for a brighter display and greater sensitivity. Measuring seven inches diagonally, this screen displays the R-LINK 2 system, with the controls on either side.

Redesigned seats now feature length adjustment. They also include double density foam to enhance comfort and prevent fatigue on long journeys, and firmer side reinforcements provide better support. The sliding front armrest adapts to all body shapes.

Door inner panels have been completely reworked. The controls for the electric door mirrors and one-touch windows are now on the same panel, which includes backlighting for use at night. Positioned under the inserts with their satin chrome trim, the door bins are now big enough to hold a large bottle of water. Air vents on the back of the central console provide improved thermal comfort for passengers in the rear.

The R-LINK 2 connected multimedia system includes a smartphone mirroring function, compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Drivers can display their favourite driving-compatible apps directly on the cabin screen for greater safety and more ergonomic use.

The 2019 Kadjar adopts the 1.3 chain cam TCe engine first fitted on Scénic and subsequently deployed on Captur, Mégane and Mercedes-Benz A Class. The engine has torque up to 250Nm.

The TCe GPF engine is available in four versions: TCe 140 GPF manual transmission, TCe 140 EDC GPF, TCe 160 GPF manual transmission and TCe 160 GPF EDC.

The 1.5 litre belt cam Blue dCi 115 engine has power increased by 5PS and torque by 10Nm. Initially available with a manual transmission, the dual-clutch EDC transmission comes later.

The 1.6 litre chain cam Blue dCi 150 has output increased by 20PS. Comes with a manual 6-speed transmission and available in 4x2 and 4x4 versions.

December 2018

Folding door mirrors are an added convenience, as is the hands free keycard for automatic door locking and unlocking. On the road technology comes in the form of a lane departure warning that enhances the safety of the New Kadjar.

Externally, the New Kadjar Iconic rides on 19-inch alloy wheels and has extra tinted windows plus a sharkfin DAB radio antenna and roof bars. New rear air vents provide greater comfort to rear seat passengers, as does the provision of two rear USB sockets.

A new trim to the Renault range, the S-Edition includes all the features from Iconic plus its standout feature: the unique interior upholstery with blue stitching. Full LED ‘Pure Vision’ headlights are standard, and the exterior appearance is further enhanced thanks to the front and rear feature skid plates in light grey.
