Honest John Awards 2018: Convertible category

Despite the general lack of sunshine, Brits are ever hopeful of good weather - which is why we're one of Europe's biggest markets for convertibles. Most, these days, are much more refined and practical cars that you'd expect, making them perfectly useable day-to-day.

Here's the shortlist for Honest John Awards 2018 Convertible category. These cars are the most popular with our readers over the past 12 months.

Fiat 124 Spider

It might be based on the Mazda MX-5, but the Fiat 124 Spider has a personality all of its own, with turbocharged engines and a distinctive design that grabs attention wherever it goes.

Ford Mustang

Do you want an iconic V8-powered American muscle car for less than £40,000? Enter, Ford Mustang. If you want a subtle car this isn't for you, but nobody buys a Mustang to blend in.

Mazda MX-5

Enduringly popular, the MX-5 is a throwback to the traditional British roadster of yesteryear, despite being Japanese. It offers sublime handling and is the ideal driver's car - and at a price you can afford.

Mercedes-Benz SLC

Classy and capable, the SLC boasts excellent refinement and comfort, and it's cheaper to run than you might think thanks to frugal diesel options. Its metal folding roof makes it very suitable for daily use in the winter.

BMW 4 Series Convertible

With its sleek design and metal folding roof, the 4 Series Convertible is very desirable. It also comes with some of BMW's best engines and handles superbly well, as you'd expect of a BMW.
