I want a hybrid but do mostly short journeys. Would lack of use harm the petrol engine?

I'm contemplating buying a hybrid. What worries me is the majority of my journeys are 20 miles or less so would be on electric power only. Occasionally, I make longer journeys. Will long periods unused harm the petrol engine?

Manufacturers I have spoken to say that getting the engine up to temperature every 4-6 weeks will keep it in good health.
