What you do suggest as a reliable and cheap to run car for £4000?

A female relative with arthritis and a mildly disabled son needs a car which will be reliable and have low running costs. As it is only used locally, diesel is out of the question. Must be a hatch or estate for the dog and for easy loading of shopping, etc. What would you recommend in the £4-5000 range?

A Honda Jazz. It's very reliable - especially with the CVT automatic gearbox - and access is easy. Also consider a Skoda Fabia estate.
