THIS IS NOT CRITICISING VW BEFORE YOU TELL ME I'M OFF AGAIN.

I read today that VW are to introduce an extension to their brand by introducing the i models.
These are initially aimed at the Phaeton & Toerag but will also cascade down to Passatt and Golfs etc.
The i brand will be alomg similar lines to MB AMG and BMW M badges but will not necessarily focus on POWER - the R badges do that.
The chrome i badges on the cars will signify more luxury and kit I think.
But it will be marketed as being more exclusive than the standard VW badged cars.

With the Golfs, you already get all the kit you could want on an SE or, my preference, a Sport or GTTdi with a luxury pack, so I can't think of anything else you'd need to add.

Still, I guess some people would have to have it. I'd rather have the R32!

I don't agree, just look at the options list for an SE and you'll see what I mean. No; leather steering wheel, CD stacker, auto wipers, auto dim rear view mirror, and on and on and why is metallic paint always an extra?

...but have you got:

"Starting at a certain level of upgrading these Individual models will be graced by the new ?i? logo. Located in three different positions on the vehicle: on the outside the chrome-plated emblem will be placed on the sides of the front fenders. In the interior the Wolfsburg upgrading specialists have the sign imprinted into the leather of the front headrests. Additionally, the logo can be found in combination the spelled out ?Individual? in the door entry area door entry area. The logo is used for two vehicle categories. First for complete models like the Golf Individual or Touareg Individual and second for vehicles built in series which are upgraded by at least one Individual seat system (don't know what that means)."

Weren't Ford doing it with the Ghia models years ago?

Given that VW have just "thinned-out" their model/trim/colours range, this looks like the introduction of another complication that will defeat their quality control department.

R32 no chance, Better off & wait for the R36 run out model of the MK5 in about 18 months time.

That is a very good point actually and was also a major contributor to MB's recent poor performance - it was mainly all the options and so called add ons that caused most of the reliability and quality issues. Thankfully they seem to be sorting it now.

Well I've got all that bar the leather and the CD changer on my Sport with a luxury pack, and I didn't pay for my metallic paint, but I do see your point.

It kind of makes sense now - when we were looking at golfs we were surprised that you only got dual zone climate control (I think!) on the GTtdi and not on the Sport, and that you had knobs for the aircon and not butttons, apart from on the GT. It looks as though they've been planning to put in this extra level of spec for some time.

I still love my Golf.... until 2008 when the beautiful new one comes out!

Attack mode off ;-)

Peronally I'd like to have a - option

No aircon
No electric windows
No sunroof
No auto this
No auto that

What I want is basic, light weight, powerfull, economical with no gadgets what so ever.

Presumably this is the one aimed at district sales managers.

The only things "missing" on my 1999 Bora 1.6 SE (2000 model year spec) are probably heated seats, cruise control and traction control.

I'm not too bothered about not having any of these features.

Must be a bit like that documentary about reps. One of them was keen to point out the 'i' in Cavalier GLi stood for 'important'.
