car insurance and low mileage - wazza
i have a '96 mondeo whose insurance is due next month. just had the car Mot'd. i had done about 4k miles in a year. it was the same for the previous year. i am also unemployed. last year i used confused.com to obtain a quote. i put myself down as employed and then unemployed with low mileage. i was suprised to find the premium was higher for unemployed with lower annual mileage. i rang the insurance company and was told they don't go by the mileage. being unemployed you are more likely to drive more often.

can anyone recommend an insurer who take mileage into consideration. don't think my car qualifies for classic insurance :-)

A couple of years back I found 'More Than' had a bigger discount for low milage drivers than others I tried.

96 Mondeo. i.e. it's 10 yrs old. Some insurance companies will consider it to be a classic.

Try Footman James who do limited mileage policies.

I insured my daughters Yaris with them.
1500 miles max. I was minding it for a year.
IIRC they do 3000 4500 miles per annum policies.

The problem with being unemployed is not so much that being unemployed makes you a bad driver but...

... the worst drivers are likely to be those who are drunk or on drugs, who have no sense of self-preservation or responsibility to others, or who have no money or desire to ensure that their car is roadworthy.

That's not to say that being unemployed makes you any of those things, but if you are one or more of those already, the chances are that you won't be able to obtain or hold down a job.

The result is that unemployed people are a bad insurance risk (although I don't buy the argument that being unemployed makes you more likely to drive - although perhaps it might mean you do proportionately more local trips where there are lots of things to hit).

Footman James also include Europe wide breakdown/recovery cover as standard, I use them for both of our cars (Octavia & Superb).
