Honda Civic 2.2 i-CTDi - Buying Honda Civic 2.2 i-CTDi 2007 service history - Rianp

Hi all,

Would appreciate your thoughts on a slight worry I have.

I've been looking for a car with some urgency. my previous one got written off by a speeding driver who fled the scene! I've put a deposit down with a dealer for a 2007 Civic 2.2 i-CTDi. When I was looking through the service book I just checked it had a stamp roughly every 10k miles and thought thats fine.

While I have been waiting for the car to be serviced, a friend of mine went to take a llok. he pointed out to me that there was a 5 year period where the car only did 10k and that it should have been serviced every 12 months. I've always done quite a high mileage so it never really occured to me to check the dates as well as the mileage.. Lesson learnt for next time.

Is a five year period without an oil change a worry if its only done 10k or should I not be too worried about this?

The car is currently on 68k miles. I should point out that my friend works with someone who used to be a Honda technician. He had a quick look at it and checked it for common faults and checked it drives ok etc.

Be great to have your thoughts

Walk, no...run away. Go and buy something else. The car is basically a worthless timebomb.

It will be fine. JohnF will be along in a minute reminding us its all a conspiracy and he only changes his oil every 7 years. At 5 years its well within the schedule.

Rianp, skidpans reply is pure sarcasm if you didnt realise....you will probably see why in a short while, when John F fires up his Amstrad computer.....and starts the same old tired arguments.

personaly I think its too long in between, I have heard timing chain rattle caused by not having regular oil/filter changes plus the turbo may not like it

I would look for one with full history rather than part, plus a chance the dual mass flywheel could be near point of replacing, regular failure on those.

Don't knock them. We still have an Amstrad PPC 640 from the 80's in the cupboard. Get it out from time to time to remind myself how far we have come.

Yeah I agree its a long period of time. I wouldn't be asking the question really if I hadn't been hasty with paying a deposit. The guy that used to be a Honda tech did say there isn't sign that the DMF is close to needing replacement though.

Sounds like I'm best off leaving it - even if it means loosing the deposit I put down.

If the car is a fair price, and it sounds sweet and underneath looks good and the mileages tally up with the MOT's and service stamps, then i wouldn't worry too much.

If its done 68k and gone 5 years without an oil change (something i doubt to be honest) then that suggests to me one particular owner during the 5 year period, i'd spend some time perusing the MOT history online and make sure everything about the mileage is kosher, if the MOT's during that period are fail free and any advisories are not repeated then i would suggest it had a self service owner or one who used a known indy hence records go to pot (ask me how i know this .:), and nothing wrong with that.

What i would do is buy 20 litres of proper Diesel engine oil of the correct grade (cheap as chips online), Diesel specific oil will have better cleaning properties, and a handful of oil filters, and i'd perform about 4 oil changes myself at 3000 miles intervals, in order to clean the engine up if indeed its a bit claggy in there, this is what i would do, most here would disagree.

Gordon typing some sense here.

I've got a sizeable amount of Mobil 1 sat in the shed as changing oil is not the most taxing task and not every drop of the oil the cars had will show up in a service book. I think if you're not a vehicle mechanic then you need to keep car buying as simple as possible; dont buy anything that's either too cheap or too overpriced, if it sounds like what you expect it to, every button works and there's no sign of any tampering with the history then you can't do much more.

Worst case scenario the engine might need a good flush and oil change which doesn't mean it's dead by any stretch.

Someone who goes to the trouble of diy oil changes would also go to the trouble of noting it down in the service book and keep some receipts/evidence to pass on. Independents also give receipts. I'm surprised that this car is being offered at a honda dealer without them offering some explanation of the missing history.

Many private owners ignore regular servicing schedules and dash warnings if the car runs ok, due to idleness, plain ignorance or money reasons. The consequences of that come further down the line.

Unfortunately I've learnt the hard way that modern timing chains, fancy variable valve timing and turbos dont tolerate old oil well. And despite what John F may say, oil sat in an engine thats run sporadically for short runs over 5 years will be loaded up with byproducts, including water, acid, fuel, lacquers and soot. I recently drained one of our fabias after 4500 miles over 18 months and the oil was clearly in much worse condition that another skoda in our fleet that had done 10,000 miles over 6 months. You cant shift lacquer and carbon deposits in engines with just new oil or engine flushes. Strip downs, aggressive chemicals and steel brushes are required in my experience.

I admit there may well be little consequential damage, but then thats for a gambler to decide. We are talking about a 5 year undocumented gap, not 2 years.

These are known for timing chain issues if oil changes are neglected andturbo failure is also a possibility. I wouldn't be happy about buying a chain driven engine that's not seen fresh oil in 5yrs but it is entirely possible it has been done by the owner at that time or the garage he was using simply didn't stamp the book - I always have to go back to the garage when my mothers Jazz is serviced because they never stamp the book.

I wouldn't have bought it but assuming your Honda expert has started it from cold to listen for any signs of chain rattle and that it has had recent oil and you intend on continuing this regularly then you may get lucky. Personally I wouldn't normally recommend a cheap diesel to anyone, especially one with evidence of neglect, even Honda didn't get it quite right on this their first attempt. The petrol 1800 however is hard to kill and will easily hit 45mpg if driven sensibly. If you had to have a Civic then this is where my money would've went. It's likely it'll cost less in the long run.

Thanks, really appreciate all the opinons.

I think I'll probably look elswhere. as you suggest - maybe seeking out a 1.8 petrol is the better option for me. loosing some deposit is probably less costly than having to fork out for problems down the line i guess.

Does the Mot history back up that suspiciously low mileage? Who buys a diesel to do such low mileage?

Lots of people bought diesels despite their intended low mileage - we all know it's wrong but few of the Joe Bloggs would listen.

May Be genuine enough but Mot history often shows up discrepancies.

Indeed, on another forum a 150,000 mile haircut was in the MOT history of a car being discussed, the MOT history is a superb tool.

Honda Civic 2.2 i-CTDi - Buying Honda Civic 2.2 i-CTDi 2007 service history - Rianp

Yeah, it does seem to.

2010 MOT was at 20,941 which matches the stamp in the service book.then it all seems to marry up, up to 2017 at 63,426

does seem strange that people buy a diesel for low mileage driving.

Until recently I was doing 30k per year so was defintely a diesel. I've cut that down to 15k now so guess I'm on the fence re petrol or diesel.

I'm only doing 10,000 a year in a big heavy diesel SUV - other than a SVR Range Rover or a 6.4 Hemi Jeep Grand Cherokee, there's not a lot of choice other than diesel.

My knowledge has increased since I joined the forum. I started from a very low base !

I have just walked away from a bargain because only two services recorded on a 2010 car.

It depends on your attitude to risk and your knowledge. From experience with cars I am risk averse and my knowledge still limited. I would look for another and petrol.

Yeah, this is a really good place to ask for advice.

I've made the decision to leave this one. Lesson learnt to look at the service history in much more detail!

Thanks for all the thoughts
