Cleaning alloy wheels

I used my Mazda 6 for a journey back from the continent and during the trip one disk pad wore out. There is now a deposit of steel powder on the alloy wheel which I can't remove. Can you suggest how?

Be very careful with alloy wheel cleaners because the more acidic they are the more likely they are to remove the lacquer on the wheel. The top detailer at Autoglym recommends soap and water and a toothbrush.
