Can I get short term insurance to test drive a car?

I asked to test drive a new Toyota at a local dealership today but they asked me to sign a form agreeing to a £600 insurance excess for any damage incurred during the test drive. I declined the test drive. Do you know if it is possible to arrange temporary cover on an hourly basis?

There are a number of insurance providers that will provide short-term cover for test drives. In many cases, you can specify the insurance cover by the hour. But obviously, you would need permission from the vehicle owner (dealership) before proceeding with this.
