What's a good first car for a 17-year-old?

My granddaughter (aged 17) will soon be starting to drive. What used small car would you recommend for her as a new driver taking into account vehicle reliability and cost of insurance. Which insurance companies offer the best deals for young drivers? The budget would be up to £5000.

We'd be looking for a Kia Picanto. They're excellent little cars and, with a budget of £5000, you'll be able to get one with some of its seven-year warranty remaining. It's difficult to recommend an insurance company - prices vary based on a huge range of factors - so it's best to use comparison sites to shop around.
