  Hi Guys, I'm new to the forum but have just acquired a piece of knowledge I wish I had a couple of months ago when I bought my Ford Focus LX. The car started stuttering when my son borrowed it for a day. I drove it next day for about 15 minutes and no problems - then it started doing the same to me. My neighbour recommended a local Ford system expert who fixed it for me at a cost of £171.

    I searched the Internet and found that others were experiencing the same problem, many had taken their cars to Ford under warranty, but there did not seem to be a fix, indeed one Ford dealer suggested driving in 3 rd in town to overcome the problem. I eventually found a post that mentioned that Ford had modified the air filter for this model to overcome the issue (the later Mk4.5 has a redesigned air filter housing).

   The latest thing now is that the charging light comes on; the garage have 'fixed' it 3 times now by putting 3new alternators on (the first 2 were pattern, the 3rd one a genuine new Ford one), but after a couple of days at the most the light comes on again. The last time the garage delivered it back home, and when I started it up this morning it came on!  They've also checked all the wiring, connections, and liased with the local Ford garage who advised them to fit a genuine Ford alternator, and they've basically had the vehicle in and out of their workshop for nearly 2 weeks now with this problem.

  I believe this to be complete rubbish, and I think I am being fobbed off. I've spoken to Millers Oils this morning and Ford approve Millers XSS 5w30 (semi-synth), so I am going to change onto this in the next couple of weeks. Then if the problem reoccurs (as I suspect it will) I can then say I am using Ford approved oil in the engine.
