  • Citroen Xantia (1993 - 2000) - 1996 1.9 TD harsh suspension ride 20 May 2009 (Forum)
I have a Xantia and recently the rear end started feeling like no suspension, it was feeling every bump in the road and there is a knocking coming from the rear. Having read through the forum, I tried going from min to max height, the front end went up but the rear stayed down. I tried lubricating the height adjuster in front of spare wheel and have managed to get it going up and down now, but the harsh ride is still there as well as the knocking does this mean new spheres are required at the back?

  • Punto 1.2 8 valve overheating? 10 Apr 2007 (Forum)
During the past 2 weeks, the radiator cooling fan has stayed on for about 10 seconds after most journeys, even after a 1 mile trip to the shops (1 hour after a 12 mile run) I've checked the water level, it's between the min & max marks, no signs of water loss. This is the first time I've noticed the fan staying on in 4 years. Is this normal or is it a sign of impending problems?
  • MOT Advisories & Passat 25 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Last year another garage insisted I replace a CV joint gaiter and said the other was on its way out , plus low brake fluid and rusty brake pipes. As the brake fluid was on max I ignored them. And no mention this year. I guess the main dealer was happy enough getting me to pay for a new radiator and other work. -- I wasna fu but just had plenty.
  • Advice on Trolley Jacks Required 21 Jun 2006 (Forum)
I'm quite a big guy so I would find a 38cm gap very difficult to fit under. Does it mean that the total gap between the floor and the botom of the car will be a max of 38cm after jacking it up to full height or does it mean that the gap between the floor and the botom of the car will increase by 38cm(eg the gap under my unlifted car is about 22cm so would I then get a 60cm gap)?
  • Odd Water Loss - Renault Laguna 15 Dec 2005 (Forum)
My 1995 Laguna has a curious water loss problem, every couple of weeks (sometimes longer) it will go from the maximum mark to the minimum in a couple of days, yet at other times it will stay at the max mark for two weeks or more. I can find no visable leakage, it seems to be running ok, apart from a bit of rough running that I think is down to it needing new dist. cap and rotor arm (which me being lazy I have a new set in the boot, just need to get round to fitting them) Any ides on the water problem????
  • Oil Overfill - Again !! 12 Nov 2005 (Forum)
My Leon was in for its 2nd year service today, on picking it up checked the oil - yes again it was 1cm over the max level on the dipstick. This is now the third time in a row from (different) SEAT dealers. Strangely I never manage to overfill the oil when doing interim changes, so perhaps there is a "technique" I am missing and known only to car mechanics ?

  • HJ's Jetta GT. 11 Nov 2002 (Forum)
By chance I opened a 1986 Autocar the other day to read a full road test of the model. They really rated it with a 0-60 of 8.5 secs and 119mph max. Handling was well liked also. From my experience of older VWs this would either give you a great deal of fun for a few months till it breaks, or it may even be worth some TLC for a longer term future.
  • No shows answering car adverts 4 May 2002 (Forum)
Get a call, is it still for sale etc, go through the conversational selling bit. Right mate I'll be around shortly, just around the corner, 10 minutes max. And you wait.........and wait.........and they never arrive. One possibility of course is a drive by which decides them not to bother, but it also happens when its locked away in the garrage. So can someone tell me what the crack is here.
  • Insurance costs. 16 Feb 2002 (Forum)
My trade motor insurance renewal arrived today, 18% up on last year. In fact over the past five years, despite having gone from nil to max trade no claims, the cost has doubled. My company comment.... "Unfortunately, due to changing market conditions, caused by the increasingly litigious nature of the general public, higher court awards for personal injury claims and hardening reinsurance premiums, insurers have carried out extensive reviews of their underwriting.
  • Any - Spare wheel 28 Jul 2018 (Forum)
I recently purchased a 2015 Nissan qashqai and I knew it didn't come with a spare wheel I knew one could be purchased for it. The dealer wanted £350 For the wheel tyre and Jack ect. After browsing eBay I have just purchased a supposedly genuine brand new wheel tyre ect for £125.
  • Did any manufacturers supply Euro 6 before Sep'15? 3 Jul 2017 (Forum)
I'm looking for a used estate car - probably a diesel, though I want it to be euro 6 compliant. I understand anything registered new from Sept 1st 2015 MUST be euro 6 compliant, so anything 65 reg onwards. Did any car manufacturers sell euro 6 cars before that date?
  • All - Is it just me ... 25 May 2016 (Forum)
This bit in 'Ask HJ' http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/askhj/answer/68147/dealer-has-over-pressured-my-tyres Basically, the person bought a new Audi S3 in December 2015. He has just checked the tyre pressures for the first time (and found them to be overpressured) and is whining about it. My attitude : Yes, the dealer screwed up. But the owner has been grossly negligent in not checking tyre pressures for 6 months, and should bear a large part of the responsibility.
