  • small bump - advice please 30 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Walking out of the supermarket 5 minutes ago saw a car reverse into mine. Small bump. I walked in front of the car and asked to exchange details. Young man got out and by the light of his mobile phone decided there was no damage to the front of my car so declined to give any details. His girlfriend was the driver. I pointed out you can't decide these things in the dark.

  • "30% of drivers can't afford insurance" ? 13 Oct 2010 (Forum)
Why should insurers lower their ratings for young male drivers when its their own driving skills or lack of them that we see daily on our congested roads and up lamposts, its a govt issue that needs remedying not an insurance lowering that we need i well remember my insurance was far more than i could afford when i started on the road but i insured and managed to keep my licence clean
  • MG4 - Driving school EV 11 Jun 2023 (Forum)
I was a bit surprised at first but then it made perfect sense. The majority of  new cars are now automatic and many young drivers will never drive a manual and  may even be looking at an EV as their first car. Also cheap running costs for the school as driving school cars don't do huge daily mileages and a lot of it is in towns so ideal EV territory.
  • Accident - Insurance Expired 30 Jul 2017 (Forum)
I very carelessly allowed my car insurance to expire and then a month later I caused a collision, only a minor one but unfortunately the young lady driver suffered some injuries and has loss of earnings expenses and also damage to her car.   As I had no insurance cover and don't have much money saved, she has told me she will be suing me for damages.
  • When Does Fully Comp Cease to be Better? 15 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Let's assume it's worth £3k, the quotes I got from a comparison site were about £1500 (with a £250 excess) due to young foreign driver. I'm tempted to go for 3rd party F&T which seem to be about £200 or so less. Any thoughts?
  • Driving age 'must increase to 18' 20 Jul 2007 (Forum)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/6904821.stm ... though "This group should also be banned from carrying passengers aged between 10 and 20 from 11pm to 5am" is a difficult one, it would effect people using a car for work between those hours and their ability to give lifts / car share. Also a sensible young driver would not be able to pick up his teanage sibling from a party etc.
  • Deals On Wheels 5 Jun 2006 (Forum)
She offered the prospective buyer a test drive without checking for insurance, in fact the buyers Daughter drove the car and I doubt the young driver has DOC. The Mother after the test drive also pointed out she would discount the car as the Tax had run out. So no insurance and no tax. Great !! and the TV program allowed that to happen. DOOOOOHH.
  • room with a view 8 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Just spent a few days in Spain, much of it being driven in roomy 20 year old Peugeot 206 (still going strong), and one thing that struck me was the fabulous all round vision - thanks to deep windows. Today's designs involve ever higher "waistlines" and, particularly for young passengers, less chance to see out. I particularly resent (as a driver) high rear screen sills, e.g. Seat Leon, which make reversing more hazardous. Which other cars suffer in this way?

  • Driving - No Insurance 29 Oct 2000 (Forum)
Let me finish by qouting a sentence handed out this week to a young NI driver in my local town. Unemployed driver, 23 years old pleaded guilty to 20, yes 20 offences of driving without insurance - banned from driving for 2 years as a longer sentence would inhibit this driver from "getting back on his feet" Or maybe I was a bit harsh in my sentencing when I was sitting.......
  • First cars - the ones you're most likely to crash. 27 Feb 2008 (Forum)
.. I find it ironic that mainly due to insurance reasons young drivers are forced to drive round tin boxes like the 106, AX, Metro etc. All these cars have a high death point score on HJ's used car breakdowns yet are likely to be driven by 18 year olds with no experience.

  • Advice re young person learning to drive 2 Apr 2006 (Forum)
I'm a little premature here, but eldest son will be 17 in 9 months and will be wanting to learn to drive. I know there's lots of stuff here on the site about young people's insurance, but these things seem to change so quickly that I'd appreciate some up-to-date advice. I need to know my options and think of the best thing I can do for him. OK, first, we are let's say financially-challenged (OK dirt-poor).

  • an old biker - cars don't kill bikers, drivers of both do! 1 Oct 2011 (Forum)
As someone who has seen both sides of the picture, been hit by a car that came out of a gateway, t-boned, (twice) and yes managed to cut up a biker too many years later, i feel that it is lack of attention and indeed lack of caring nowadays for anyone else on the road. i was never a very fast rider, my reflexes were never good enough from 45 years ago to 12 years ago when i gave up and sold my trusty trident after moving back to london.  I so often see drivers of all types on mobile phones while driving, and just yesterday saw a young lady drive into the back of the car in front very very slowly as she was looking at her passenger as she talked to her. oblivious to the car in front stopping at a roundabout . there was no damage and nobody got upset and the car in front that was hit actually drove off....
  • Land Rover Discovery 3 - Spurious Accident Insurance Claim 13 Jun 2010 (Forum)
My son was driving my Discovery in the dark and the rain, and turning right, when a young driver heading towards him lost control and slid into the front of our Disco. Disco was stationary at moment of impact. Damage to Disco: nil, damage to other car : plenty. My son called Police who breathalised both drivers (clear) and left.
  • Are there 2 types of caravan driver? 7 Jun 2006 (Forum)
We all moan at being held up by caravans, but last week I was pleasantly surprised - so I have to ask are there 2 types of caravan drivers? Those with young children who have places to go, rather than the older ones with time on their hands who are oblivious to other road users needs. What do you think? -- Roger I read frequently, but only post when I have something useful to say.
  • Regular driving tests 10 May 2005 (Forum)
A large proportion of accidents are the result of the lack of experience and wisdom (not increased reaction times), which means the younger and/or less experienced driver. I would suggest yearly driving tests for the first 7 years, followed by 5-yearly tests up to the age of 70, and then yearly after 70. Having accidents is not totally the preserve of either the young or the over 70s.
