  Bangkok Motor Show 29 Mar 2008 (News)
  Hyundai showed its new rear-drive, 2.5 litre diesel H-1 van-based MPV, destined for the UK this summer and its Velostar concept coupe. Nissan had new variations of its TIIDA B sector car and Intima prototype of the new Teana. Ford showed a 4-door Verve, to be built in Thailand in 2009, but only pre-facelift Focus IIs. Mazda had its new CX-9 seven-seater SUV that comes with a 273PS 3.7 litre V6 or the 238PS 2.4 litre turbo from the CX-7.

  Some part-exchanges were being let go for very little: an 81k mile 99T Subaru Legacy 2.0GL Classic estate (ideal for next week’s snow) sold for £2,600; an 81k mile 98S SAAB 9-3 2.0S sold for £2,225 and someone’s daughter or son will probably be very happy with a 71k mile 97R Citroen Saxo 1.1SX bought by dad for £1,025. A 19k mile 2002/52 Nissan Terrano II SVE 7 seater with the rare 3.0DI engine sold for a sensible £13,500, and even came complete with a loadliner. A 3k mile 04 reg BMW E50 545iSE (what was that doing there?) sold for £34,000.

  Also worth reporting, a clean 90k mile 97R Terrano II 2.7 sold for £5,900; a 20k mile 02 reg Nissan X-Trail 2.0SE+ petrol sold for £12,450; and a 34k mile 04 reg Mercedes Viano 2.2CDI Ambiente automatic eventually sold via a phone call for £24,100. So not a very good day, but things are bound to improve as supply increases and demand slips away in the run up to Christmas.

Further interesting entries included the nicest Nissan S Cargo I've ever seen, this one 1989 build with portholes, a rear seat and a mere 82,000 kilometres showing. It sold for £3,100 (£3,355 inc.). A fully kitted out and immaculate 19687 SAAB 96 V4 rally car bid to £11,000 provisional (£11,905 inc.).

    Smoked The engine of my 2011 Nissan Pathfinder self-destructed at 91,000 miles, despite a full Nissan service history with intermediate oil and filter changes every 9,000 miles. Apparently, the level of oil in the sump had risen. I would have expected a diesel engine to last at least 250,000 miles.

  Essentially a cheaper version of the Shogun, the Pajero was imported into the UK in large numbers by small importers (rather than Mitsubishi UK) and private individuals and was quickly targeted by criminals due to its lack of security measures. Other models topping our crime tables include the Nissan Bluebird and Sunny. Unlike the Pajero, the Nissans were built for the UK market, but it appears their longevity has become their Achilles’ heel, with the cars’ antiquated security systems being little match for the modern car criminal.
