  • Why did my dash cam void my insurance? 13 Apr 2021 (Ask HJ)
I had a dashcam fitted by Halfords into the fuse box. I informed my insurer, who informed me that cover was therefore removed by the underwriter. I had...
  • Any - Advice for inexperienced driver buying a used car 6 Jul 2018 (Forum)
We've decided we (my gf as well) can live with the potential leisurely pace of the engine/car given we are both quite cautious drivers and will be extra cautious with our 2 young children on board. Also we will be mostly driving on slower, local and flat roads anyway. We still really like the car and haven't been convinced enough by alternative cars to for one of them instead.
  • Honda Civic - Honda Civic - Is this car a good buy? 8 Nov 2017 (Forum)
    3) Rear 2 tyres are budget tyres (unheard of brands) of different makes. 4) bunch of small suffs scratches in the interior of the upper door frame of the drivers door.     Owner was not sure how they came. He thought that it might be due to him stepping out of the car holding the car key, which may have rubbed on the door frame.     Scuff marks on the bottom door sill on the drivers door.
  • Calm down dear... 18 Sep 2004 (Forum)
...I'm really a very good driver! Well, as we all know, in my recent youth, I wasn't a very good driver, and the time has come to renew the car insurance again. Last year I think I paid about £800 fully comp, and this year the best the broker can come up with is £760, which I don't think is particularly good as I now have 3 years no claims discount and am practically an old lady (can't wait til I'm 25 and break through the magical young driver barrier!).
  • Dark evenings and dangerous drivers 2 Nov 2002 (Forum)
I carried on forward, determined that I was not going to be forced off the road by some aggressive teenage driver (male or female) but the car persisted. Glancing to the right, I saw the car, literally no more than an inch from mine, come forward again and then make to swerve around the front of my car. I hooted, twice, to warn them of what they were doing, but they took no notice.
  • Rust retrospectively, predicting future 5 Mar 2007 (Forum)
In Conclusion, Perhaps rust only matters if you have experienced it and suffered as a result? and most modern young drivers will never have. But how do you predict the future for buying as rustproof a car as possible, when a Volkswagen and Mercedes Benz can rust faster than a Peugot and Fiat in the modern era?
  • Which van can carry 200lbs of equipment, has a full-size bulkhead and 2 rows of seats? 1 Feb 2017 (Ask HJ)

  • On-road drag racing... 26 Mar 2002 (Forum)
From a local newspaper: A young Phoenix man and his passenger died horrific deaths on Sunday when his car burst into flames in a crash which police say was linked to drag racing. Leon Jagesur and a young woman, who has not been identified, were burnt beyond recognition on the M19 leading to Quarry Road early on Sunday.
  • The future could be bleak 8 Jul 2003 (Forum)
The current craze around here seems to be idiots on motor scooters riding on the pavements ! One day these idiots are going to be car drivers so God help us !
  • Road Manners 10 May 2001 (Forum)
(and I wasn't using the staff car park). Too bizarre. Struck me as the epitome of the type we see on tv moaning about young people in society, rudeness etc. You know I'd have minded less if it HAD beed a spotty yoof in a banger. Oil the wheels, count to ten, and be good out there! Stu.
  • We want a small car for less than £2000. What advice would you give to a clueless buyer? 16 Feb 2021 (Ask HJ)
We need a second car for local trips (the school run, popping to the shops etc - no long motorway journeys). I don't want to spend more than £2000 and...

  • Lancer or A3? 23 Apr 2012 (Ask HJ)

  • Strange hankerings 11 Sep 2020 (Forum)
Two door Orion, Ford or VW badge and often with a detuned VW 1800 GTi motor. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Verona I think Honda miss a trick by not importing this wee belter. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_S660 A tough but cheap go anywhere off-reader for less than most city cars. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lada_Niva The car to survive the apocalypse. https://www.toyota.com.au/landcruiser-70 This would do wonders for VW’s rather staid image in the UK. https://drivetribe.com/p/vw-saveiro-2020-its-a-little-pickup-PRVoQlOlT_WESBmEGGNVcA Affordable fun for young drivers. Only 63bhp but it looks mad. https://www.autoevolution.com/news/2015-suzuki-alto-turbo-rs-is-pocket-racer-from-japan-video-photo-gallery-93149.html I think Dacia miss out of a lot of sales by not offering the Dokker MPV, Van and pickup in the UK.
  • Honda Accord - 2004 Accord v 2008 Mondeo mk 4 24 Jun 2020 (Forum)
I've heard good things about the revised Ford 2L Duratec HE engines once they fixed the swirl flaps and similarly good things about the Honda 2.4L K24A series engines. I should note that I'm a young driver so the insurance is ~1.5-2x more for the Honda. The 2004 Honda Accord 2.4L i-VTEC Executive is up for £2.7k, automatic, petrol, has had 1 owner, 85k miles and is at a (seemingly) reputable dealer.
  • New car for Mother-in-Law 14 May 2008 (Forum)
Criteria are (not very exciting I'm afraid) * Automatic * Easy to drive and park, she's a fairly tentative driver * Compact, but enough space to carry her 3 young grandchildren, so 3 proper rear seatbelts very handy, and 5 doors * Easy to get in and out of, she's not very nimble these days * Low-maintenance, reliable, hassle-free * She does a few motorway miles, so must be able to cope out of town The following do not matter!
  • Northumbria Police 3 Good PR 0 27 Sep 2006 (Forum)
I indicated by use of the horn his stupidity and lack of knowledge of Highway code. Some 200 yards later I was stopped by a another young fool in a Panda car who proceeded to berate me for using my horn. As he must have seen the incident he took the option of berating me rather than pursuing the driver who had caused the incident. Victim 1 Perpetrator 0 Additionally I pick up a passenger from opposite a well-known food store in Kingston Park.
