Skid marked

My eldest son passed his driving test 2 weeks ago. Unfortunately, last Friday he had his first accident, driving well below the posted speed limit but on a slightly icy, slippery road. From his own account and from that of his passenger, the error occurred almost certainly due to braking slightly late and then too heavily. Thankfully, nobody was hurt but the car did not fare so well. The car he was driving (mine) does not have ABS braking, but the car in which he had all his lessons does. He therefore had little or no experience of driving a car without ABS, and while ABS may not have avoided the accident, it may have helped. I wonder whether you could point this out to other parents of newly-passed young motorists as it is not something that had even occurred to me. A car without ABS is not going to be nearly as forgiving for the inexperienced driver as one so equipped. It may also be worth pointing out to instructors so that they can also make this point to their pupils.

This morning I phoned my son (who also passed his test two weeks ago) advising him not to drive at all in the snow. In fact, in today's snowy conditions, ABS can prevent the car stopping at all, whereas braking on snow in a non ABS car causes a snowplough effect that builds up a wedge of snow in front of the car that stops it. Think ABS means “allows braking and steering”, don’t think ABS means “antilock braking system”. And in normal driving do not ever brake unless travelling in a straight line. Good idea to pay for a Pass Plus course for the lad. Reads liker he needs it.
