A bit of road down under 31 Jan 2009 (Forum)
were inflated above 45 psi and the entire front passenger door trim, pull handle, window switches etc. had been ripped off apparently by a gorilla and stuck back on with gaffer tape by an educationally subnormal baboon, rendering the window operative only with fiddling and the odd spark. However the oil and air filter were clean, the steering, suspension, brakes and exhaust were all sound and it had the Aussie MoT equivalent. It was doing 28 mpg at first and seemed a bit reluctant in high gears uphill, having been used only for pootling very gently round town for some time past, but after some running using more than 2,000rpm, a couple of new tyres inflated to more moderate pressures and some long-distance cruising it was doing more like 33mpg and felt and ran far better. -
The final raceday 5 Sep 2001 (Forum)
Another Mk2 was observed running the length of the back straight as if joined to the boot of the untouched Volvo in front. The corner was reached, Volvo man applied brakes and attempted to turn, Mk2 man maintained full power, the Volvo carried straight on, and very nearly crested the 20' earth banking on the outside of the corner, end of Volvo. The banking was so steep that the Volvo driver could barely stand on the slope after climbing out of the wreckage. -
A Fine Mess - Motoring 10/3/1 12 Mar 2001 (Forum)
Speed Camera technology is improving very quickly and combining digital photography, number plate recognition software and Police to DVLA data links the issueing of speed tickets can be instantaneous. A new method of average speed photgraphy will elliminmate the heavy braking before an obvious speed camera box a the average speed will be measured over a longer length, ie one end of a village to the other. I hope that shortly the message of speeding will be understood , as drink driving is now considered unsociable. -
Mercedes CLK 270 CDI 2004 - Dealer Issues with a Faulty Car 3 May 2014 (Forum)
1. Third Level Brake Light not working (this under inspection was found in bits in the boot) 2. Rear Exhaust Back Box rusted with holes in. 3. Tyres fitted to the front where of a larger diameter then the rears (these have now been changed round) 4. -
Mercedes-Benz B-Class - B class review 6 Aug 2011 (Forum)
The car has stop start technology which automatically turns the engine off once you stop, select neutral and take your foot off the clutch. None of the electrical items or braking assist are taken out so it is possible to roll down hill slowly without any power – once you get to 10mph the car bursts into life again. The left hand drive wiper set up has finally been swapped to RHD so no complaints in that regard anymore. -
Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - Golf GTI 1.8T - first impressions 25 Mar 2010 (Forum)
Tracked arrow straight with very positive steering, pulled like a train, and felt very responsive, and very tight for the mileage. Brakes smooth and reassuring, Nicely specced too. A superb set of Recaro seats, Climatronic, electric sunroof, electric windows all round, electric mirrors, ABS etc etc. All in perfect working order, apart from an intermittently noisy blower motor Upon getting it home, I dug out my VAG COM, and performed a throttle body adaptation, which is recommended after the throttle body has been disturbed. -

2yrs on from buying a 9yr old dpf-equipped diesel 10 Sep 2019 (Forum)
All servicing and repairs by local independent garage, a Renault specialist. Jan 2018 Service - Major - including brake fluid replacement - £352.40. Mileage 89640 Feb 2018 - after a hard overnight frost (the car is not garaged) I naively went to lower the passenger window. With the glass frozen into the frame, the internal door regulator arm ripped itself away from the glass. -
Citroen Berlingo First Van 1.4 Petrol 2009 - 1.4 Berlingo Van Steering Knock & Tracking Issues 15 Mar 2014 (Forum)
The SYMPTOMS that appeared after that were these: When driving, although my van steers pretty straight, it has a tendency to wallow/wander and veer/lean to the left mostly but sometimes right depending on road condition. It is very camber sensitive too. This can be exaggerated when applying the brakes when coming to a stop - sometimes the pull is alarming - it's quite violent sometimes to the left but can be either to left or right depending on road camber. The n/s knocks when going over bumps/pot holes - and seems to kick back to the rack, where I feel the effect in my steering column and at my feet- as it were at the bulkhead. -
Roadtest : Avantime 20 Jul 2002 (Forum)
The only quirk as that around town on sharp bends at about 30mph the ASP would kick in and you could feel the wheel on the inside of the corner being braked. This wasn't at speeds or angles that I would have thought would cause understeer. There were only a couple of niggles with the car - to get into the rear seats you need to release the front seats. -
Anatomy of a ride 23 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Buy some cloth and some brake cleaner and spray the mess off Grace's rear rotor and tire. More Gatorade, some photos, a brief ride evaluation discussion. I always enjoy these informal de-briefs. Definitely they make better riders of all of us and enhance teamwork. -
BMW 5-Series E61 Touring (2004 - ) - 25,000km report BMW 530d 9 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Wow, big difference to the old one - no empty diesel rattle here, this one sounds loud and powerful and reminds me of my old E46 M3 at idle. Into Drive, accelerator foot to the floor and then brake suddenly, slightly alarmed. Where is the turbo-lag? This engine revs and offers torque instantly, a big and unexpected improvement over the old one. Onto the i-Drive. I liked the old i-Drive, the simple top level menu hiding bewildering complexity underneath had an element of the old GEM graphical user interface from the 80s Atari home computers about it. -
Grand Scenic - full review. 3 May 2007 (Forum)
We have already fallen in love with the keyless operation, but I still don't like the electric parking brake, even if it does, in fairness, work very well. Practicality The boot is vast, which is why we went for the Grand ( we won't need the 7 seats more than very occasionally). I like the way the rear seats slide forwards to give more bootspace, or rearwards to give more legroom. -
Peugeot Woes 23 Nov 2005 (Forum)
having to slam them to get them to shut. - Headlights were mis-aligned which made driving at night difficult. - Brakes squeaking - Wind noise from the drivers window - Unexplainable noise from the rear when driving. - Passenger seat loss of memory - Problem with radio memory seems to always divert to radio 1. Went to collect the car on the arranged collection date, only to be phoned when I was nearly there to say it was not ready. -
Letter Fom The Colonies Vol 11 14 Mar 2005 (Forum)
To signal anyway would give the game away to the other feller and thereby lose both advantage and face. Brakes could probably be dispensed with, since they are seldom used. Not so the horn, the more musical the better. One imagines if there was an MOT here that the horn would be a major failure item before anything else. -
Buying a new car 22 Dec 2013 (Forum)
Expensive but a very nice car to drive and be in but I always had some reservations about the looks. The brakes felt very good too and the ride quality, although stiff, was comfortable. Hyundai i20 – The dealer/sales person was excellent. -
Dilemma of dilemmas of dilemmas 2 Feb 2012 (Forum)
The Renault diesels don't look to have too many issues apart from keeping an eye on the EGR valve, but I've driven a Modus and I didn't much like: the driving position, the over-servoed brakes, the cable gearshift, and the feel-less electric steering. Is the Nissan Note any better in any of these respects? So, my own shortlist seems to be becoming: Hyundai i30 1.6 diesel - preferably estate Kia Ceed 1.6 diesel - preferably estate (Kia also has the advantage that any diesel drivetrain shenanigans might be still be covered by its 7-year warranty, although the ONE diesel estate I found in the country for less than £6k and with less than 80k miles was a 58-plate that already had 74k miles on it!) -
First wheels 7 May 2007 (Forum)
The front tyres, fat Michelin crossplies, squealed a lot around town, but there were no handling vices at the speeds it could manage and the roadholding and braking - the front drums were large and finned - were exemplary. This was just as well because although the device was insured I had virtually no driving experience, had never taken a driving test and was rushing about as fast as possible on an Irish licence obtained by a friend in Dublin for a quid, backed by a couple of untrue statements and a forgery. -
Veg oil in your tank 13 Jul 2001 (Forum)
We are 3030 meters over the sea, in the middle in the summer skiing area. And can it hardly seize. As later the brakes, which whistle with the descent of the Stilfser yoke on the last hole. With kilometer of 1513 the burner motorway is achieved, and is called again distances eat: requirementless concrete runways up to the target. -
Mazda 3 - Mazda 3 2.2 d engine failure - warranty problem 13 May 2015 (Forum)
I've owned it since July 2013, when it had 55,000 miles on, and it had full Mazda dealer service history. I had it serviced by Mazda in January 2014 for the 62,500 mile service, I also had front brake pads and discs replaced by Mazda a few months later, and then 4 new tyres to pass the MOT in July 2014. By November 2014 it was due the 75,000 mile service. It did not go back to Mazda, because I rang 4 different dealers, and received 4 very different quotes, including very different things, which was very confusing.
