someone tried to kill me today 26 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Under normal circumstances, I would get safely to the other side without the driver even needing to think to cover his brake pedal or decelerate. However, I did not reckon with my physical presence and temerity in crossing the road acting as a red rag to Mr X6 driver who flashed his lights, accelerated towards me and blared his horn as he actually jinked towards me. -
Jaguar XJ6 and XJR (1994 - 1997) - 95 3.2 The oil just vanished 20 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Oil and fluid were fine beforehand, and I checked the oil once or twice when I was over (for a month). It actually went into a Jaguar dealer (Rybrook in Conwy) when it was in the UK, as the brakes needed sorting. I don't know if they would have bothered to check oil and water etc? Anyway, I'm fairly sure that I checked oil and water before returning to Jersey. Taking a circuitous route with an overnight stop to see my parents, the total journey from Conwy to Poole was about 500 - 600 miles, at high speed. -

Honda Accord Tourer (2003 - 2008) - i-CTDi long term update 31 May 2008 (Forum)
The suspension is compliant, and the car doesn?t tramline since switching to P6000 Powergy tyres. The rear brakes lasted 62k, but the discs needed doing as well when they were changed. Overall, I?ll be keeping the car after the PCP expires in Dec, but I?ll be getting an aftermarket warranty and switching to an indie for servicing. -

Citroen Saxo (1997 - 2003) - 1999 1.4. Constant Issue driving me mad. 9 Nov 2007 (Forum)
The air intake control valve (starter motor) they replaced this and the problem persisted. I can drive down the motorway, through town but if I brake/go below 1000 it will cut out. I have also had the problem when I slow down its almost revving itself. http://download.yousendit.com/59BE246173E1B281 <-- Video of it doing it. literally the rev needle bouncing up and down on its own when I? -
No satnav, forgot map? Ring Dad! 27 Aug 2007 (Forum)
David "Roundabout" H "Right. What can you see around you?" David "Cars, loads of cars" pause "And a truck with no brake lights" H(stifles a giggle) "I mean at the roadside. Houses, shops, countryside. That sort of thing" David "Oh, houses" long pause "I'm just next to No 83" pause "Hang on, we're moving. I'm going round a roundabout with a sign to Romanby". -
Yamaha FZ1 Fazer 1000 20 Sep 2006 (Forum)
I do love riding the ZRX, it is more traditional, has real integrity and is close enough to the latest bikes to not be left behind dynamically however today's bikes are amazing, the Fazer has a totally contemporary chassis and brakes etc, it would run rings around a four or five year old Fireblade or GSXR and is a lot faster than any Ducati 999, all that and it is a comfortable as a Hornet or Bandit to ride. That appeals to me. -
Safety conscious? Riding vs driving 1 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Yet on the bike the previous evening, I had felt the need to slow to less than 30 in an almost identical situation, in order to avoid even the possibility of emergency braking. I believe I'm just as keen to avoid an accident whichever vehicle I drive, but it seems that the sense of vulnerability on the bike makes me far more cautious than the car does. This makes me think that although I used to tell myself that I would always have something to learn about being an even safer driver, I may not have realised then just how much learning I still had to do. -- andymc Vroom, vroom - mmm, doughnuts ... -
3 x idiots - 1 x unfortunate 22 Feb 2005 (Forum)
In the last few days I have seen some of the most foolish / dangerous behaviour on the roads some involving motorists and other road users. 1 - Started on Thursday morning - I was sat in a stationery queue of rush hour traffic when a man wearing a suit passed me on a unicycle.... (I kid you not!) Got me thinking, surely that is neither safe nor legal. Dont think they have brakes for one thing. 2 - On the same afternoon I witnessed a middle aged guy attempting to start his car from another using jump leads while sitting next to a petrol pump on the forecourt of a supermarket filling station. -
Death by Dangerous Driving and Leniancy? 27 Dec 2004 (Forum)
The car had no MOT and had been up for sale for spare parts and advertised in a supermarket for just £100. Wendy Carter, for road safety charity Brake, said Rawlinson had to live with what she had done for the rest of her life. "I hope people will hear about this and think carefully before driving. The sentence is very lenient, but she does have a life sentence for dealing with it." -
Local lunacy (again!) 29 Jun 2004 (Forum)
\"A cruel April Fool\'s joke indeed,\" said Lee. There was also evidence of a defective clutch, shock absorbers and ball joints, leaking brake fluid and loose exhaust brackets. Aside from the mechanical defects, the taxi also had various structural failures. Cracks repaired with body putty had reappeared. Some of those threatened to separate the roof from the rest of the taxi. -
Good therapist needed urgently 20 Feb 2004 (Forum)
As always with these old big block live-for-ever Fords, whisper-quiet mechanically, no evidence of smoke but with the bellow of an enraged bull when floored, brutal acceleration, trans takes up with a postive clonk straight away, brakes with loads of travel but work fine, some evidence of the traditional Mustang overheating (it's 34 C today), the anti-diluvian Bendix a/c works fine (the seller has a car air-con shop!), delightfully woolly one-finger p/s, lots of body rattles... -
Merc A140 or Honda Jazz? 15 Oct 2003 (Forum)
My wife's 1994 Escort is now well past it's sell by date (especially the lack of brakes - scary!) and with a young child and another on the way we thought it's best to buy a newer car for her. We don't want to spend more than 9K if I can help it and we didn't want a large people mover thingy like a scenic nor a little town car like a yaris. -
In praise of old clunkers 14 Sep 2003 (Forum)
I took it to be serviced and experienced new levels of freedom and personal liberation by telling the mechanic to put in any old oil as long as it was the cheapest, and thus now sleep well instead of obsessing whether it should have been the 0w/40 or the 10w/30. The brakes are red-hot despite the discs looking like the surface of the moon and the thing gives every impression of going on for ever. Most importantly the horn is very loud and works. It is a bit sluggish on the uptake (I've been too used to low revving torquey V-8's for too long) but wind it up and it goes like the proverbial off a shovel. -
Forced off the road by "not my fault" 2 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Suddenly out of nowhere, a car comes racing along in outside lane with a view to pass me but suddenly sees the red car in front of it waiting to turn right, so racing car pulls straight in front of me giving me the nearest miss that I have ever had in over 20 years of driving. The only reason it was a near miss was because I jammed my brakes on, steered to the nearside to avoid said car, was forced up the kerb chipping the kerbstone and came to a halt. The racing car ignores my rather sudden hooting and trundles off into the distance. -
Poor service at Honda dealers 15 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I asked to have it serviced according to the schedule, and she advised it was a major service, with a brake fluid change. Cost was about £280, so I booked it in. They pick the car up from my house last friday, while my wife and son stay at home. I get a call from the garage mid-morning, the rear pads are at 70% would you like them changed, cost at £105 fitted. -
Think once, think twice, think squirrel? 16 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I managed to get the big motorcycle under directional control and dropped the front wheel to the ground. I then used maximum braking and skidded to a stop in a cloud of tire smoke at the stop sign at a busy cross street. I would have returned to fess up (and to get my glove back). I really would have. Really. But for two things. -
Toyota Prius not rubbish to drive shock! 30 Jul 2009 (Forum)
10 minutes of fiddling and swearing revealed that you have to put the key module in a hidden slot, then simultaneously press the brake pedal hard and touch the ?Start? button on the dashboard. Should have been obvious I guess. Put the tiny shifter thingy on the dashboard into ?D? and off we went. There are 2 big surprises when you move off from rest the first time in a Prius. -
BMW I3 - I bought a used BMW I3- a story to be updated . 13 Sep 2025 (Forum)
Great progress until hit M6 Southbound- 10 to 40 mph crawl for 20 miles.. easy peasy driving with regen braking recovering lots of energy in stop start. At the start, estimated range was 103 miles on Electricity alone. (MOT and local driving to test it by garage would see heavy usage and few miles.
