  • Clio Mk2 Phase 1 - 2001 - Clio No power to fuel pump - Fuse? Relay? Diagram? 2 Sep 2024 (Forum)
It started after a few seconds. I drove it around the block for a few minutes. All was fine, except brakes need freed up. A few days later someone else tried to start it but failed. I went to the car and found no fuel getting to the injectors, then found no power at the fuel pump. I did not have any cable so could not send power to the pump to see if that resolved the issue.
  • Peugeot 508 - Peugeot 508 2019 engine and clutch failure 2 Nov 2023 (Forum)
My 2019 Peugeot 508 Blue HDI 1.5 has been horrendously unreliable this year despite only just reaching 48,000 miles. It has had two rear suspension arms replaced and brake pads plus discs replaced at 40,000 miles. Then in September 2023 when exiting a roundabout, the car totally cut out with what was diagnosed by the RAC as a ECU failure but later investigation when the garage eventually accepted it some weeks later was a snapped timing chain and a whole new engine.
  • New tyres/bust tyres on the back 24 Jun 2023 (Forum)
Although this seemed to be discounted by all other posters in the thread, I find this advice convincing, having “lost the back end” of a couple of FWD cars due, I THINK, to lift off engine braking in slippery conditions. I THINK the official advice is also that a blowout on a rear tyre is MORE dangerous than one on the front, and here Im less convinced, partly because it seems counter intuitive, and partly because I was once a passenger in a Commer van (not the most stable looking vehicle) that bust a rear tyre on the A1and no one noticed until the remains caught fire.
  • Return to self 30 Mar 2023 (Forum)
Today I purchased an immaculate, full history, low mileage 67 plate Honda HRV 1.6 DTEC SE Nav for her to melt tyres and shred brake pads in. Sadly the Honda “approved used” stock in Ayrshire and Glasgow was in woeful condition and my attempts to negotiate a deal with a private seller on a tidy sounding blue 18 plate were unsuccessful so this car has come from a car supermarket, a place I’d typically avoid.
  • Hyundai i30 - How much to dix these MOT failures? 11 Sep 2022 (Forum)
I enquired about how much it would cost to put the following MOT advisories right (Minor defects) Nearside Front Suspension arm ball joint dust cover severely deteriorated (5.3.4 (b) (i)) Offside Front Suspension arm ball joint dust cover severely deteriorated (5.3.4 (b) (i)) (Advisory) Nearside Rear Brake disc worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened (1.1.14 (a) (ii)) I was quoted £393 for the suspension issue and the £292 for the rear disk (although he said it might not need doing once it gets driven?

  • Hot smell from rear wheel post service. 17 May 2020 (Forum)
Investigation revealed the o/s rear wheel was hot. Now to my untrained mind, this suggested a binding brake. But, while i have not had the opportunity to jack up the rear to try and spin the offending wheel, it certainly doesn't feel like it is binding. The driveway on which i was parked at the time was on a very slight slope and upon releasing the handbrake the van immediately started moving.
  • Ford Focus Estate 2009 1.6TDCi 110, 120k miles - Focus 1.6TDCi Power loss 9 Dec 2019 (Forum)
This can be anything from a small but noticeable blip when using cruise control at 70mph on the motorway, to a more noticeable drop when accelerating, which is similar to tapping the brakes. At it's worst, under heavy acceleration, the engine loses all power and refuses to run. Fortunately if this happens if I turn the ignition off and restart the engine, then it runs as it did before, although the problem is still there. It is possibly worse when the engine is cold, but I would say much more related to amount of acceleration, regardless of speed or gear.
  • Toyota Starlet - Transmission Problem 19 Sep 2019 (Forum)
Anyway in she went to my local mechanic, it’s been a month now and he just can’t figure out what/where the noise is coming from, he’s a pretty cautious mechanic and is reluctant to ‘throw parts’ at an ‘old car’. So far he has: - checked and greased the cv boots - cleaned off the brakes and checked everything to do with those - replaced the wheel bearing on the drivers side. - drivers shaft has been removed and the car pushed - the noise is not present. The noise which can be heard now quite loudly from outside the car sounds like a click or a dink.
  • Jaguar XF - 2016 Jaguar XF 2.0D 180 Reliability v 2009 XF 2.7D 22 Jul 2019 (Forum)
I've owned my 09 XF 2.7D Premium Luxury since nearly new and have enjoyed totally trouble free motoring. I've never had any problems and have only ever needed to change the tyres, brakes and oil. With nearly 80k miles it still drives like new. However, I'm aware the car is getting on now, it's by far the oldest car I've ever run and arguably I'm sitting on a timebomb in that inevitably it's almost bound to play up at some stage as it gets older and older.
  • Near-miss this weekend. Who was most at fault? 3 Jul 2019 (Forum)
The Volvo had been travelling quite slowly and as I got closer to his rear three-quarter he stuck on his indicator and pulled across to go down a side turning which emerged on the right-hand side - right in to the path of my Saab. I jumped on the brakes and swung the wheel right although there was only the turn-off to the right to go into to avoid a crash. With much screeching of tyres and swearing I managed to get my car into the turn off, missing the Volvo and the bank.
  • Ford fiesta - Car struggling to drive ABS light on 21 Jun 2019 (Forum)
It was making such unholy noises that passers by were staring and one shouted that I should turn the hand brake off.  Then, just as I pulled up the ABS SERVICE NOW light came on. I promptly shut it off and walked home. I'm wondering if there may be a simple solution to this. Is it possible that the 6 weeks of inactivity meant the handbrake has jammed or perhaps I installed the battery wrong and the computer has been fried?
  • 2017 Hyundai Tucson 2.0 TDCI Premium SE auto 4x4 - Problems on a nearly new low mileage car 13 Mar 2018 (Forum)
Never experienced such an issue in 14+ years of driving various cars. – Electronic hand brake doesn’t release on occasion… – car manual says 2 year/20000 mile service interval, however, the car came up with a service required message one day after purchase. The manual did say if the car is used on short journeys, town driving, start stop traffic driving etc it may request a service early as seems to have happened here.
  • Ford Focus Estate - 2017 Focus deals vs 4-5 year old cars 15 Feb 2018 (Forum)
Other than that I want the smallest wheels and fewest features. Modern cars have so much tat. Why do I need emergency brake assist? If I want to stop hard then I'll press the pedal hard. I suppose I'll just take what it's got though. Are the prices going to drop further when the 2018 model is launched?
  • Petrol, AWD, auto - which SUV? 7 Feb 2018 (Forum)
I want:   petrol (reason cited above) SUV/Crossover AWD automatic  with AEB (auto emergency brake)  with ACC (adaptive cruise control) new price not over £30k (I'll possibly buy a 1-yr old) not hybrid     For petrols, the choice with above features are limited.
  • Toyota Yaris - Stick or twist 23 Nov 2016 (Forum)
Its done well, but I reckon we spend around 200-300 in repairs a year. Be it bearings, suspension, exhaust or tires. In the last few months I've had brake pads replaced, and some investigations into fuel smells. Now the other day I unavoidably drove over a rock and hit the subframe and exhaust. So needs a new cat, plus have a leaky shock so both need replacing.
  • Range rover L322 auto 2003 - ignition key stuck in the switch 10 Dec 2014 (Forum)
Hi John I hope you can help me with this problem in that when I got into my car the other day, put the key in the ignition and started the engine, I tried to move the gear stick out of park and into drive. The gear lever seemed to be stuck in park, it's only when I really pushed down on the brake pedal it moved. I checked all the gear positions before moving off and everything seemed fine. At the time I just put it down to a gremlin in the system.
  • Passat VW - Bought a car from a dealer with a few faults.... 17 Oct 2014 (Forum)
I went to view it, and to be fair it has loads of receipts, it's been cared for, new brakes, 4 new good tyres, new timing belt, recently serviced by previous owner. Went on a test drive with dealer (well he drove it as he didn't let people test drive) and he said it was spot on.
  • KIA Rio - What Car TRUE MPG Figures - Need Investigation 9 Oct 2014 (Forum)
For those interested, a visit to their web site is very informative and suggests that a variation of 10 mpg would be a cause to carefully check for errors such as binding brakes on the poorer of the two nominally indentical cars being compared.      .
