Leaking Brake Fluid? 2 Jul 2001 (Forum)
When changing a rear wheel on my car this week, (which has drum brakes on the rear) I noticed a sticky golden residue around the rear wheel studs. Is this brake fluid? Where is it coming from? There seems to be plenty of fluid in the reservoir still. Advice appreciated. -
Brake pad material 23 Jan 2001 (Forum)
I went to Halfords to get rear brake pads. I noticed the own brand were a dark colour and the Ferodo a light colour at £1 more per pair. The Ferodo were nicely chamfered so I got those. Is the brake material much the same? I read somewhere they had got rid of asbestos so they are harder. -
Porsche Cayman S - Intermittent Problem with Brakes 22 Oct 2019 (Forum)
I have a Cayman S which basically has almost zero braking maybe one time in 20. On the other occasions it brakes ok. When it doesn't work properly the pedal stays firm rather than going to the floor but just doesn't slow the car down properly The front discs & pads were approaching the end of their life but there was no odd braking noises / other signs of a fundamental problem I asked the garage to check it out & change the discs & pads. -
Testing hand brakes 23 Jun 2015 (Forum)
How often do the BRs test their handbrake / parking brake ? Some BRs, replying to the recent thread on electronic parking brakes, said they very rarely applied the handbrake, especially with automatic gearboxes. -
2006 VW Passat B6 2.0 TDi 140 BHP 6 Speed Manual - Electronic Brake Caliper VW Passat B6 19 Jul 2014 (Forum)
Hi does anyone know if one of the rear electric brake caliper is faulty does the motor still try to operate on the second brake caliper or is the whole system shut down pending replacement of faulty brake caliper. Im asking this question as I took it for brake pads replacement recently and the mechanic could not get the rear calipers to release so new pads could be fitted. -
Nissan Primera III 1.8 s 51 plate - grinding noise when braking 14 May 2010 (Forum)
on the above car i am finding when braking the brakes are not as responsive as they were before and the car makes a horrible grinding noise, the brake pedal also judders like when abs kicks in however this is happening when i brake slowly so its not like i am emergency stopping, its taking the car a good while to stop as well im not convinced its the brakes themselves as these were perfectly fine before this issue, also the cv joint drivers side was replaced last week and this has started playing up now any suggestions would be welcome, also i do not want to spend too much on this as this is a low value car so any approximate prices would be welcome, then i can decide if i wanna keep it or off to the sc***heap! -
BMW 5-Series E39 (1996 - 2003) - 00 3.0 Tyres: Braking resistance problem? 28 Apr 2008 (Forum)
I had all my brake discs and pads replaced last year prior to changing the tyres. Is this being caused by my new Falken tyres or trouble with the brakes? I have heard that different tyres have different braking resistance and ifso do I need to replace my front tyres to a premium brand with a harder compound, stronger side wall? -
Peugeot 407 (2004 - ) - 1997 2l diesel - Soft brakes? 4 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Is it me or has anyone else experienced soft brakes on a 407? I have a 55 plated 2L diesel - super car! At normal town speeds the brakes feel fine, except for a little excessive pedal travel in my opinion. The issue starts when braking heavily from 70 plus mph - the pedal travels a long way down, feels soft, and the amount of pedal effort does not seem to equate to the stopping rate: not a flash from the ABS light (if there is one), not a rumble or any sort or pedal feeling telling me the ABS is operating - and not a squeal from the tyres. -
Rover 416 Spongy brakes 27 Jun 2005 (Forum)
My local brake specialist can't fix this one. !! P reg saloon with ABS. Lucas brake system. The problem came from 'no ware', ie the system hadn't been touched prior to this. When braking the foot pedal slowly goes to the floor. -
Worst Test drive 22 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Back at the showroom the dealer proceeded to tell me that the noise was probably nothing, a bit of brake binding, and that the movement of the brake pedal was normal for a car with 4x disc brakes (Yeah right, not only is that rubbish, i think its also an MOT fail point). Needless to say i walked away! -
VW Golf high pitch noise, brake seizure? 15 Jun 2003 (Forum)
After this time the noise can sound at lower speeds. It also occurs whilst in neutral. A mechanic has briefly heard this and he says it is the brake calipers possibly seizing, possibly due to brake dust. This results in contact with the disc thus giving the noise. The seizure is therefore occuring as the wheels warm up. From reading similiar problems I believe the cause is due to front brake calipers possibly seizing, possibly due to brake dust. -
05 Renault Espace 1.9 tdi - error messages after brake replacement 18 Jul 2012 (Forum)
We have just replaced the rear brake pads, rear brake line and callipers on our 05 Espace. Having finally got everything in place and bled the system, re-engaged the parking brake, the car will no not start! It is bringing up a constant string of error messages for parts of the car which have not even been touched during this job (E.g. -
Volkswagen Passat - Brake Leak - Caliper Cable Attachment Seal 8 Feb 2011 (Forum)
Hi all, My 2001 Passat (B5)'s rear brake is leaking :( It seems to be coming from the seal between the caliper's cylinder and the parking brake mechanism attached to it, the bit that gets rotated when the cable is pulled. It's a sort of spring-loaded tap thing, mounted by a screw... -
Nissan Micra K11 2001 - Flashing engine light: stuck brake? 5 Jan 2011 (Forum)
The engine sounded ropey and struggled to go up hills Arriving at my destination, I thought I smelled burning rubber (like stuck brake pads, maybe). But I wasn't sure. I'll have to check after toninghts journey home. Brakes work OK, there is no leaking brake fluid. Question: A stuck brake wouldn't lead to a flashing engine light, would it? -
Peugeot 205 - vibrations on the brakes 5 Sep 2010 (Forum)
Another problem...(having sorted the ignition ballast) When braking esp at higher speeds, there's a definite shuddering. It's speed-variable (ie faster at higher speeds). I first noticed it pulling off a motorway, but now even at slower speeds I notice it - keeping the brake pedal depressed, you can feel the force applied change as the wheels rotate. -
Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - 94 1.2 braking problem 25 Apr 2009 (Forum)
I'm currently repairing a 1994 Vauxhall Corsa which has the following problem: When the engine is running and the brake pedal is pressed and then released it stays down for a few seconds and the brakes remain on. If the engine is not running the pedal returns immediately although the travel is less. Also, after the engine is switched off the servo can be heard 'hissing' for approx 15 seconds after which it stops and pressing the brake pedal proves that the servo has lost vacuum. -
Citroen Xantia (1993 - 2000) - 95 1.9td Brakes Binding ? 22 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Recently aquired 1995 1.9 TD VSX Xantia estate with the hydra-active suspension. The(iIthink rear) brakes seem to be binding slightly, rear end dips down on takeoff and brake is obviously on intermittently when stationary, although never when left for any length of time. The LHM and return filters need to be changed and cleaned soon.Could this solve the problem? -
Vauxhall - Astra Merit 1.7TD brakes 16 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Gradual braking from speed seems to be fine, but sudden braking at slow speeds requires quite some effort. Someone I know who seems to know a lot about such things said that if the servo had gone, I would have heard some hissing, but I can't hear any noises out of the ordinary. -
