BMW 5-Series E60 - Diesel Dilemma 29 Mar 2010 (Forum)
I have had the wheels and tyres checked and it does not appear to be the problem. I have spun the wheels round on a jack and not much brake binding or disk distortion. My wife nor my garage can discern my problem!!! In desperation I changed from filling up with diesel at my local Supermarket to a BP station, putting 2/3 tank of regular diesel to fill up. -
Daft stories. 14 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Back in the days where I was selling cars a disgruntled customer brought his Golf back complaining about it pulling to the left, I took it out for a spin and couldn't find a fault. I handed the keys over saying it's fine, I even slammed the brakes on without holding the wheel ? no probs. The guy became very irate saying there's definitely a problem and he'll turn up with his ?bros? if I don't fix it. So I offered to sit in the passenger seat while he demonstrated the problem, no sooner had we headed off we nearly collided with cars on the left hand side of the street. ? -
Vauxhall Vectra B facelift (1999 - 2002) - 02 1.8 changed lamba sensors, ecu light still on 21 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Can drive all day long under 80 mph and light wont come on but when you go over 80 the light comes back on and seems to be when you start to brake from 80 mph it comes on instantly. Any suggestions? It is doing my head in. When it comes on i have to pay another 40 quid to get it took of again but diagnostic came up with no faults only for the 2 sensors that i changed before. -
Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - 1996 1.6 Clutch pedal dropped to the floor 14 Jul 2009 (Forum)
I removed the circlip from the pedal shaft on the outside of the pedal bracket on the left hand side and hoped the shaft would exit toward the right hand side, I then realised that the shaft had a short flat in it at the right hand end and a matching 'D' shaped hole in the pedal bracket which means the shaft will only exit toward the left hand side, it does move a little but then comes to a dead stop. There is another circlip within the pedal bracket adjacent to the brake pedal which I removed because I couldn't see how the shaft could push through with that in place. At the pivot (top) end of the clutch pedal there is a 6 mm allen headed bolt, it looks like an adjustment bolt, but can that be so? -
Nissan Micra (2003 - 2010) - 03 1.2 Windscreen wipers have a mind of their own 10 May 2009 (Forum)
While the indicators are running all functions of the wiper control work normally. Operation of the brake light will also temporarily switch off the wipers when the fault is present. The rear wiper is not affected. The car is a basic model and does not have rain sensors. (unless you know otherwise) The presence of water may have some bearing as operating the screen washers will often but not always provoke the fault; it also seems to be more likely to happen in damp/wet weather. -
Will there ever be the perfect car? 30 Apr 2009 (Forum)
It seems amazing in this day and age of high tech computer design and modern build methods that cars can still have recalls with tiny switches or engine sensors, brake components and other seemingly simple parts. If car makers had only invented the car a week ago I could understand teething problems but after more than 100 years of car making you'd think engineers would have found the way to build the ultimate car. -
Ford Fiesta (2002 - 2008) - Road test - 1.25 Style 11 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Good points: Spacious up front, handles nicely, reasonable interior quality, boot is wide, noise suppression is good, brilliant gearbox, steering and brakes very nice. Bad points: 1.25 engine is a useless, gutless wonder devoid of torque ( actually tested it back to back against my Charade and it lost badly, thirsty, boot is shallow, rear seat space poor for size of car, quality doesnt extend past the dashboard with lots of hard plastics everywhere else, suspension was already creaking on my 5000 mile example. -
Honda Jazz/Fit (2001 - 2008) - random tyre pressures 2 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Until May this year the tyres have lost pressure in a manner I would expect - equal across all tyres. Since May [I keep records] loss has been random - once the steering and brakes felt so odd I returned home. On checking, both off side tyres were down 3 lbs more than the n/s pair. The latest check revealed the o/s front and n/s rear to be down while the others were fine. The Jazz is sensitive to pressure loss and I am usually aware of the need to check. -
Honda Shuttle/Odyssey (1995 - 2000) - 1999 2.3 Holds 2nd gear in kick-down 25 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Car is going to my local indy at the end of the week for a full service. Will ask hime to change all fluids incl. auto oil, brake fluid coolant etc. Don't mind spending quite a bit on this as I bought it cheap and love it. -
Tyre fitters - praise and grumbles 17 Jul 2008 (Forum)
He says to wait while he goes and sees if anyone is free. He is gone for 1 minute, when he is chatting to a guy doing brakes on a car. Comes back and says "IF you give us a ring tomorrow, may be able to look at it then". I give up and after driving around find another national chain, 10 mins before closing. Guy behind desk is doing paperwork. -
Mazda 626 (1987 - 1991) - Why is my fuel consumption so good? 6 Jun 2008 (Forum)
I do a limited amount of urban driving, and I am sure my reading of the road ahead, with subsequent lack of heavy braking helps, but I still manage to average 37mpg week in, week out, even with climate control permanently switched on and a fully loaded 6 disc CD player playing loudly. Is there anyone else out there whose fuel consumption has exceeded expectations...all I have read about to date are BRs whose consumption has been disappointing. -

Citroen ZX (1992 - 1998) - 1995 1.8 Petrol - Cutting Out On Over-run 30 Nov 2007 (Forum)

Vauxhall Frontera (1991 - 2001) - Has my car really been serviced? 16 Nov 2007 (Forum)
On the service sheet there is a large section stating that the following checks had been carried out with the 'wheels off', if the wheels had come off wouldn't I have finger prints in the brake dust? Does anyone have any advice on how I can prove my car has not been serviced because I am pretty sure it hasn't but don't know how to prove it. -
Can't get the basics right 27 Jul 2007 (Forum)
She bought it round and I tried to apply the handbrake - it was very hard to get it to even the first 'click' and the back brakes were quite hot. Obviously someone had wound up the adjuster until there was no slack in the cable! The spec. on these is wheel lock at 4-9 clicks. Couple of minutes with my 10mm ratcheting ring and we were back to 5-clicks and everything was fine and dandy again. -
Trade in Golf for a Jazz? 15 Jul 2007 (Forum)
In the time I've had it, it's had whole new exhaust system, new oil pressure switch, new rear washer pump, new boot catch, 4 tyres (Goodyears), new brake pads and it's still got some minor stuff that needs sorting - slight play in MacPherson struts, new clutch master cylinder required. I'm basically waiting for the next breakdown. I bought it for £5500 in Jan 06 and it's probably worth £3500 to £4000 now. -
VW Golf - tankslapper/steering shimmy 9 Jul 2007 (Forum)
My girlfriend's 1988 Golf GTI 8valve has a tendency to develop what I would describe in motorcycling parlance as a 'tankslapper' when you hit the right (or wrong) bump whereby a fairly impressive steering shimmy sets up necessitating either braking or accelerating to make the wobbling stop. It seems to be the offside front wheel which is sensitive to setting this chain of events in motion. I have jacked each of the wheels up in turn and can detect no play in the suspension or steering, and am wondering what else could cause this behaviour? -
Speeding - mixed messages 8 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Speeds in excess of 50mph have been witnessed in Canterbury centre this afternoon with total disregard to the two second rule and braking distances have gone out of the window. There was a pile up in a Kent lane less than 20 miles from Canterbury centre. Will the police study video evidence and prosecute the guilty party for riding without due care and attention ? -
406 hdi 2.2 fuel filter warning (FAP) 2 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Shortly after the management system light has also lit (the one bottom centre that looks a tad like a brake cylinder) saying Anti Pollution system has failed, which I take as a consequence of this filter not doing it's job. Manual say take it out for a run. Done this-still on. Took battery off for an hour.
