Nissan X-Trail - Dealer hiding MoT Advisories 10 Aug 2013 (Forum)
Around six months later I got the vehicle serviced at Nissan dealer who advised me the rear brakes were dangerously low and needed urgent attention. I felt this was a little strange as I had only done around 2,000 miles since I purchased the car. I replaced the rear pads myself, and indeed they were very low. -
Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 1999 1.8 Courier van instrument/electrical problem 7 Feb 2009 (Forum)
A month or so ago I started noticing that some of the warning lights on the instument panel glow faintly when I'm driving. The full beam, fuel heater coil, brake warning and ABS lights have all been affected but at random and sometimes two at a time. They are not glowing fully e.g. if I pull on the handbrake when the brake warning lamp is lit then it doubles in brightness. -
Long distance commute - car choice 19 Jan 2008 (Forum)
However if they cant they slow down and even stop causing a severe domino effect with sometimes heavy braking and stop start motoring. Last week this happened and I stopped safely in a blaze of sudden brake lights as everybody jammed the anchors on. I looked in the mirror to see an HGV bearing down on me at speed, swerving at the last minute into lane 1 when a gap miraculously appeared, I was very shaken as my life flashed before me! -

2004 Megane 1.5 dCi 100 24 Jun 2006 (Forum)
I got the impression that it was a known fault, although they didn't say as much. While it was in the dealer they checked the brake pedal pin as it's subject to a 'Product Enhancement'. Mine was ok but if it needs doing it's a four hour job, under warranty luckily. Conclusion: I have enjoyed owning this car. -
Giving the battery an easier life 18 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Without wringing its neck, let the engine (and therefore the alternator) spin a little as you go up the gears. Don't sit with your foot on the brake pedal for ages; light up the little handbrake warning light instead of the array of brake lights. Don't use any of your fog lights unless it's foggy (the clue is in the name). Finally, if the car isn't going to start, give your neighbour or rescue service the chance to help you out, don't keep trying the starter until the battery is completely dead. -
A tale of two renaults 14 Jun 2005 (Forum)
The hands free card is the way the card system should be, totally user friendly. Reacquainting myself with the electronic parking brake reminding me how well thought out it is. RFs next wagon I think. PS I chatted up the service receptionist and she gave me two clips for the goona key card that allows you to hang keys on them?.. -

Do we molly-coddle cars ? 12 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Its not like they're worth a groat after 5 years anyway. And then we get upset with other drivers. I don't care if they keep their foot on the brake in traffic, my pupils are built to protect my retina, I don't mind if they driver slower than I want to, I just overtake them at some point; there's no point in jumping up and down about traffic jams, it only amuse the kids in the next car; Personalised plates don't bother me, not that I have one; baseball caps backwards look uncomfortable, but they don't bother me. -
Lorries overtaking - definitive response 20 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Because us truckers keep a big gap from the vehicle in front and can see what the lane up ahead is doing thus leaving plennnnnnnnnnty of time to ease of the gas without the need for ever braking. You look at the outside lane and they're all 2ft from the vehicle in front, accelerating harshly, stopping that guy in the middle lane from leaping into that gap if they leave one and then when the vehicle in front brakes, they brake harshly themselves because they're so close to it they've left themselves no thinking time to see if the vehicle is lightly braking or doing an emergency stop. -
Premium SE - Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid After 16 Months. 17 Dec 2024 (Forum)
Hi all, though I would write with my thoughts on this great little car that I took delivery of at the end of March last year. Well, it's just come back from its 40,000 miles service today. It's brake pads are only 10% worn, and the original tyres on the front are still at 3.7mm. I have refuelled it 74 times since taking delivery, and it is thus far averaging 68.63784 MPG over this period or 25.0585 Kilometres Per Litre. -
RIP handbrake, spare wheel and 4th cylinder 3 Sep 2024 (Forum)
I'm always open to new technology and exciting trends in car design, but there are three that I find utterly tedious. Press-button parking brakes and space saver wheels (and their truly evil half-brother, the puncture repair kit) have been covered amply in other threads. The three-cylinder engine, seemingly adopted as yet another weight-saving, CO2-reducing measure, has found its way into Stellantis products, including a number of cars I have hired over the past year or two. -
Ford Galaxy - Put my automatic gearbox to 'Park' while moving 8 Jun 2024 (Forum)
From what I can make out 'Park' basically applies the clutch (disconnects engine from transmission) and applies a brake, under normal use? Any experiences or knowledge that could put my mind at rest ? Thanks! -
Toyota Yaris mark 3 - advice re bigger car/aging Toyota Yaris 13 Dec 2023 (Forum)
She is very reliable,in the two years that I have had her I have replaced all the tyres as they were quite worn when I got her,the original battery went and her brakes need some work soon. I love her! however she is almost 12 years old and I have a toddler now,and a medium sized dog. I am worried that she is getting older, everything inside the car is very cramped even without a dog or baby a big load of shopping and my work stuff fills the car. -
Suzuki Vitara - One forum favourite replaced by another 12 Oct 2023 (Forum)
This brought its four routine services and repair costs to about £2.6k in four years and only 14k miles. It’s had that suspension member, bushes, brakes (front discs and a calliper), rusty subframe treated, wheel bearing and other bits and pieces. Not much else to go wrong you’d think but it’s had its chance and with our mileage stepping up we need a newer car. -
Sporty small car recommendations… 20 Jun 2023 (Forum)
No spare just useless goo that won’t fix a 3” gash. Can’t get a space saver as they don’t fit over the brake discs. So she has a tricky ‘want’ list Must be a 5 door. Must do 0-60 in less than 9 seconds. Must NOT have low profile tyres. We live in the New Forest and the roads are poor. Must be a manual. -
Renault Grand Scenic MK III 2010 - APPROX repair / diagnostic costs in this list 1 Apr 2023 (Forum)
* Fog and / or water test to establish water ingress issues evidenced in two doors, beneath the underfloor passenger storage box (and possibly the dash area) * Brake pedal cover replacement. * Investigations to oil leak seen in engine bay. * Misalignment investigation to one door and repair. * Rear light cluster replacement. * New battery. -
Seat Leon PHEV - Test Drive 16 Oct 2022 (Forum)
The much-hated heater controls seem absolutely fine to me. It's got unnecessary emergency braking, but no adaptive cruise. Hard acceleration triggers the petrol engine, which makes a right racket. Quite a lot of road noise, although this one was on 18 inch wheels, so... I really wanted to like it, but it was on at £28k after a year and 10,000 miles. -
Merc C220d coupe '63 plate, 55,000 miles - In for service 1 month ago, at the garage still... 5 Aug 2022 (Forum)
Hi all - I took my car in for a service and 2 new brake discs. The next morning I picked it up and left a trail of oil for half a mile before the garage runf me and said they spotted oil where my car had been parked. On its return, the garage said it was the rocker box seal and they had to order it from Germany as there were none available in the UK. -
