  • The hated caravan 12 Aug 2003 (Forum)
As I look forward to this summer's holiday in Norfolk (not renowned for dualled main roads) I wonder is it because back roomres are so often held up by caravans on main roads travelling at 50 mph? In that case, now that modern cars are relatively more powerful and have better brakes than their ancestors, shouldn't the 50 mph restriction on main roads and the 60 mph restriction on dual carriageways and motorways be lifted? I think our outfit would be less of an annoyance to others if it was allowed to travel at the NSL.
  • New Vectra towing electrics 30 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Upon investigation we found that the rear parking lights on the Vectra operate on only 3.5 volts. The output at the 12N plug is about 3 volts. When the brake pedal is pressed one of the parking light bulbs on each side of the car becomes brighter as it then receives the full 12 volts. The bulbs are not traditional dual filament. In addition there are clicking sounds from a large fuse block at the back, nearside of the car when the 12N plug is inserted into the car socket.
  • Progress over 5/10 years 21 Jun 2003 (Forum)
We know that top of the range BMs etc have sat nav,, clim control, cruise control etc but what do you think the basic Astra or Focus equivalent will have as standard in 5 years - xenons? sat nav? mp3 , DVD?? It wasn't that long ago that a high level brake light was the "new thing". Where will we be in 5 years time?
  • Audi power steering/hydraulic system 1 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Hoping someone out there in the backroom has been here before..... Have an ols coupe with the combined power steering and central hydraulics system (aids the brake servo). Yesterday I drained the system in order to remove a bit of it and get to something else. Re-filled the system, bled it and checked as per Haynes manual, all seemed OK. But it's not. The auto-check system displays the symbol indicating a problem with the system (low fluid level or lack of pressure), and the pump makes a bit of noise that wasn't there before.
  • Free 1965 Rover 3 litre 1 Dec 2002 (Forum)
The inside is very poor due to a leaking windscreen seal and is very wet. Some of the leather is splitting apart and the varnish all gone. Carpets are rotten. The rear brakes are locked on. It's parked on grass/earth about 10 metres from the nearest tarmac. A land Rover and 10 metres of chain/steel wire should get it out. From then it needs a trailer. A friend owns it and has to get rid of it because the land owner wants the land back.
  • Passat, jumping out of gear 1 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I have a September 2001 VW Passat 130 bhp PDI. (10,000 miles to date). Very rarely it jumps out of 1st gear when using engine braking going at about 5 mph down an extremely steep hill; the engine is obviously not pulling the car. Like all good faults it cannot be reproduced at will. VW know nothing about it and my dealer is willing to investigate but only if I can make it happen - which of course, I can't when I want to!
  • Calling DVD and colleagues 22 Nov 2002 (Forum)
    (2) Paragraph (1) does not apply in respect of- (a) a direction indicator; (b) a headlamp fitted to an emergency vehicle; (c) a warning beacon or special warning lamp; (d) a lamp or illuminated sign fitted to a vehicle used for police purposes; all fair enough then one gets (e) a green warning lamp used as an anti-lock brake indicator; Pardon? What's all that about then? in case you donn't believe me the link is here >> http://www.hmso.gov.uk/si/si1989/Uksi_19891796_en_3.htm#(Tii)i4filamentlamp ??
  • 309 service 7 Aug 2002 (Forum)
. £146 covers the following: -Engline flush -Mobil 1 and filter -Air filter -Spark plugs -Coolant change -Fuel filter -'Checks on brake fluid boiling temperature, steering, suspension and so on' (what exactly this covers I don't know) I like using them as they do report back about anything they notice, which is reassuring. Plus, Peugeot have quoted me £250, god knows why.
  • Ford Focus wheel bearing problem 2 Apr 2002 (Forum)
The wheel bearing had broken up with 2-3mm of movement on the hub, now seemingly located mainly by the brake caliper. As this vehicle is relatively young with moderate mileage I would be interested to know if this failure is a known problem or just a one off. Thanks for reading and I would appreciate any feedback on this subject.
  • Carlton Lifespan 25 Feb 2002 (Forum)
I have an '86 Carlton Auto which has done about 96000 miles . It has just been MOT'd -needing a couple of brake pipes, front pads and downpipe and rear box-middle section and rear shoes were replaced last year .The reason it needed pads was a sticky sliding caliper which obviously had worn the pad down on one side.
  • Bloody Indicate!!! 18 Oct 2001 (Forum)
As I'm about to enter the roundabout this guy is turning right after all, but not indicating, by the time I realise this I have already crossed the approach and therefore have to slam on the brakes at the same time as the other guy to avoid a collision. We looked at eachother in disbelief, then what does this bloke do? PUTS HIS INDICATOR ON! If you can't even be bothered to flick a stalk then you should'nt be on the road!
  • TOP GEAR GTI 15 Jun 2001 (Forum)
Having just watched the above program on satalite I can only say that it is sad and boring.what is 120 brake does the dumb women mean bhp .Their actual knowledge of motor vehicles seems pretty limited.I want to see a car really examined the bits where the paints missing ,where its not properly welded how good the service agent is etc .And where did that Lacashire hot pot come from?
  • Rumble Strips 27 May 2001 (Forum)
Since they first began to appear the severity of the riser appears to have increased, causing an unpleasant judder through the steering. I would hate to have to perform an emergency brake on a wet road while travelling over these, particularly on a bike. The local council round here (Havering) has had the brilliant idea of placing these at random on a straight 40mph road, no junctions in sight, presumably as a "Traffic Calming" measure.
  • Renault Clio - Goodwill gesture not paid 12 Jun 2021 (Forum)
In January i had my car front brake discs and pads replaced at a body repair shop who also does servicing Brakes and the likes , But mainly accident repairs. The garage charged me £140 to supply and fir the discs and pads which i was happy about.
  • Volvo S40 SE 1.8 Petrol 2005 - Car immobilised. Root cause of error codes? 25 Sep 2018 (Forum)
No life from engine and a bunch of dash warnings: Power steering service required, park assist service required, reduced engine performance, immobilizer see manual, brake failure stop safely Recovery service called out who couldnt start it at first but then after a failed bump start (no engine activity) the car came to rest and after that it started as normal.
  • Nissan Note - Said they'd serviced when they hadn't 4 Oct 2016 (Forum)
No offer of goodwill gesture or courtesy car but they did pick it up from home. Then they called to say the brake pads and rear wiper blade needs changing. The brakes will cost £156. I said why wasn't it advised during mot, he said it was noted down and it's probably on your advisories which if wasn't. I told them I want them to pay for it because either they are charging me for something that doesn't need doingg or they should have put in on an advisory.
  • Multiple Mechanics.. different diagnoses.... 8 Dec 2015 (Forum)
Also had an issue with my handbrake.... i need to pull it all the way up for it to hold...... one guys telling me it due to a rear caliper.... other guy says its brake pads... So with so many conflicting diagnoses i decided to put up with it and left it.   And now i have a few more things going on with the car that can't be ignored..... a dull knocking when driving over bumps in the road, a loud creaking when going over big speed bumps and my surge tank goes empty overnight after refilling......
  • 2001 Ford Mondeo TDDI - Part deterioration - query 13 Jul 2014 (Forum)
Same with the brake pipes, could they go from not being a concern to 'failure' point within two weeks of an MOT? I get that an MOT is only as up to date as the day it was done, but I'm just really shocked and confused as to who I believe.
  • Ford Focus - 2005 1.6 Engine Warning Light 25 Jun 2012 (Forum)
Ford did a full 75K service, changed the brake fluid, air con gas, spark plugs etc. Later that day my engine warning light came on, this happened after driving in terrible flooded conditions (loads of water on the roads, splashing up on the car, people in land rovers doing stupid speeds splashing up more water on my car).
  • Cars people race 17 Sep 2010 (Forum)
Because of traffic I got passed him and for the next couple miles the guy sat on my bumper trying to get passed, he forced his way through by making other cars on the other side of the road brake, then he braked had forced me to stop and shouted at me for nearly running him off the road. After that incident I had a camera fitted but it has broken and I had not had the time to take it back When in the Mazda I occasionally get raced off the traffic lights by a eager 17 year old in his Coras, but rarely as aggressively as I do in the Alfa Also why are people more inclined to let some makes of cars out of junctions for example then others When driving the Jag people let me out rarely, same is true off my Probe I once owned, yet again people seem more willing to let the Mazda out?
