Cars people race - julie page

I have two cars a Mazda RX8 (although used to be my only car)and an Alfa 156 1.8 for everyday use and over the last 10 years I have owned a number of cars, both personally and as company cars, Astra, Mondeo, Audi A4, Jaguar X type....

I have noticed that it is rare for anyone to race the Mazda but find myself constantly being raced in the Alfa, dangerously so.

Yesterday Ihad two incidents - on the same roundabout - going to the shops I was raced round the inside of the roundabout by an old Escort, it had huge exhausts and was driven by a young blond teenage girl. The roundabout has two lanes and has traffic lights on them, on my return I was stopped at the lights turning left when a Golf GTi came along side me. When the lights changed he tried to race me to the left turn, I saw some red and virtually forced him onto an island that separates the left and right side of the road - later he over took me and went roaring off at well over the 30 speed limit, this time it was a block in his 30s I guess.

I nearly got pushed off the road by an Audi some weeks back. Because of traffic I got passed him and for the next couple miles the guy sat on my bumper trying to get passed, he forced his way through by making other cars on the other side of the road brake, then he braked had forced me to stop and shouted at me for nearly running him off the road. After that incident I had a camera fitted but it has broken and I had not had the time to take it back

When in the Mazda I occasionally get raced off the traffic lights by a eager 17 year old in his Coras, but rarely as aggressively as I do in the Alfa

Also why are people more inclined to let some makes of cars out of junctions for example then others

When driving the Jag people let me out rarely, same is true off my Probe I once owned, yet again people seem more willing to let the Mazda out?

Because rightly or wrongly, most people make an assumption about the kind of person likely to be driving a particular make of car. So they will or won't let someone out of a junction depending on who they think you are (same principle applies to the racing thing)

eg: Micra must be an old lady doing her shopping; Insignia will be a sales rep; Corsa will be boy/girl racer; Mazda is average; BMW will be arrogant (although rapidly being caught up by Audi); Focus will be normal routine. Clearly some people have pigeonholed Alfa drivers in a negative way; must admit that one hadn't occurred to me

The proportion of Micras let out at junctions relative to BMWs must be massive.

And I know there are thousands of exceptions to the rule, many of whom are contributors to this forum...

Don't worry. People like me try to even things up. I always keep the Micras where they are in case they mimse in front of me...;-)
