CORRECT usage of Auto boxes - help 12 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Should the Auto lever be shoved in Neutral or Park, or just left in Drive? I would guess you are still meant to put the hand brake on. When I say CORRECT, I mean as recommended by BSM or the Government/Highway Code etc. As in, what procedure is expected for a pupil to pass the UK Autobox driving test. I think most people (NOT those on driving tests!) -
Cheaper cars? 2 Jun 2003 (Forum)
No carpets, just rubber mats. Radio, ash trays, glove compartments get rid of the lot. No servo brakes and ABS right out. Just the bare minimum, although I would have to have fabric seats to sit on and in this country some form of heater. The engine would have to meet the normal emmisions standards but could this be done with less "technology"? -
ford dealer servicing 24 May 2003 (Forum)
Took my V reg Mondeo into an independent garage for a 60k service. Upon collection I was told that considerable effort was needed to remove the rear brake drums and it was considered that they had probably never been removed during the life of the car. All previous services were carried out by a Ford Dealer. Upon scrutinising the Ford Service Checksheets, I noticed that the wording adjacent to the tick box says "check rear linings for wear using inspection pad inspection holes" In other words the drums need not be removed. -
New car build quality 18 May 2003 (Forum)
This is small beer compared to what I've just read in Murray Walker's autobiography though, from his days as Vauxhall advertising account manager: He was shown a brand new Victor that had drum brakes on one side, and discs on the other! -
Focus not so good 6 May 2003 (Forum)
My old car was great, drove like a demon and handled like a dream. One of the best cars I had ever driven. The LX is soggy, the brakes seem terrible, the gear change seems lumpy and heavy, the handling is for peanuts and the inside is naaaasty Add to that the tractor type sound effects and you have a car that is very, very average. -
Peugeot 306 'M' reg turbo diesel. 17 Apr 2003 (Forum)
I am not just concerned about flat battery and flat spot tyres but also whether the remote control zapper will work, the turbo draining of oil , and brake problems. If I decide to go over there can any of you experts give me any advice on how I can safely put it back on the road before he returns Grandad. -
Too many bhp 10 Jan 2003 (Forum)
I presume it was my reaction to the initial skid that set it off but once started I had no idea what to do but hang on, brake and hope. Was there anything I could have done once the slide had started? What caused the snaking? I'm now scared stiff of driving anything with more than 95 bhp!!! -
Oil only services 6 Jan 2003 (Forum)
I've got a 1996 VW Polo 1.0 in good nick,76k, which is now used for very local/travel to BR stations trips, less than 6k a year. I'm going to run it into the ground. I can do the basic checks myself (brakes/other fluids/tyres etc and fill the washer bottle, which is something I've always been charged for whether it needs it or not)and if I spot something amiss that involves more than basic maintenance I take it to the garage. -
BMW 318Ti 7 Nov 2002 (Forum)
What are the views on a) the price (seems about right to me, HJ has seen quite a few higher mileage ones at auction recently) b) more importantly the mechanics after 5-6 years of shortish runs, I'm normally a believer in high mileage low price and do not want to pay top dollar for a car that that's going to need brakes, tyres, battery etc, the moment I drive away. plus the fact I'd prefer a 5 speed manual. I have fond memories of an e36 318i which handled and drove fantastically well, does the Compact have the same on the road feel. -
Pet Hates 22 Mar 2002 (Forum)
3. morons like the Rover 25 driver I met yesterday who pull out to overtake and then SLOW DOWN so that faster traffic has to brake 4. HGVs and caravans who try to overtake another HGV caravan with a speed differential measured in feet per year 5. Caravans in general, especially convoys of them where everyone is too spelfish to leave space for normal traffic to overtake I feel better now. -
Cowboy servicing 28 Feb 2002 (Forum)
My Father has just been stung by our local independent garage, who until now has been well trusted. Upon requesting (verbally) for an MOT prep with brakes for his ageing 2.0 GSi primera, (N.Ireland MOT's are conducted by official government run centres not local garages as on the mainland) and specifically declining any washing, oil, filters etc (due to DIY servicing) He gets an additional £86 parts + VAT & £30 + VAT labour bill for a full service, they even replaced a 6 month old fuel filter! -
Sadly, Stereotype female drivers 31 Jan 2002 (Forum)
In Richmond, a silver haired old lady try to drive out of a parking bay by revving the nuts of her Polo, easily 6000rpm. "Go on Love" I thought "dump that clutch, and see if you can reach the brake quick enough" But whilst waiting to fill up in an Esso Tesco in the Kings Road, a very posh lady pulled up alongside me, in a Chrysler Voyager, got out, ummed and arred for a while, before heading into the shop and returning with a young assistant who showed her how to put petrol in it. -
VW Polo -Noise 13 Oct 2001 (Forum)
Once gone the noise will not come back again until the car has been sitting for some hours.Decreasing speed, touching the brakes, knocking it out of gear ,changing the air vents etc ,does nothing. If you don't stop the car the noise will stay there regardless of what speed you do. Can you help? -
Lights not Fantastic 16 Apr 2001 (Forum)
If you ever get bored you can always watch the through traffic performing emergency stops, tyre burning braking and swerving, caravans snaking all over the road and LGV six axle lock ups from the relative safety of the overhead. -
Peugeot 405, rust. 31 Mar 2001 (Forum)
In HJ's car by car breakdown for the Peugeot 405, rust appears at the top of the list of what's bad. HJ also said about the 405 a while ago: Look for rust "in the seams and in the brake lines. Get the thing on a hoist and have a good look underneath. Build of this cars is very 'light' (much lighter than a Fiat Tipo, for example) so any searious corrosion will make them very weak." -
Audi A6 + RS6 (1997 - 2004) - Am I being ripped-off hideously or just going mad? 18 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Rear discs and pads.' Aside from servicing, MOT, etc., bill ended up as follows: To replace rear brake discs and pads £185 To replace 1 x CV boot £120 To replace 1 x track rod end £113.50 Total bill £723 Next visit January 2008, less than 6k miles later and another MOT fail, reasons being: Anti-lock braking system warning lamp indicates an ABS fault Offside track rod end ball joint has excessive play Nearside front constant velocity joint gaiter split Offside front constant velocity joint gaiter split I asked why he hadn't done both track-rod ends the last time and he very helpfully told me he was trying to 'save me money'. -
Toyota Prius plug in 2017 - Very quick review 7 Feb 2018 (Forum)
Once back in the 30mph zone the petrol shut off. Electric range was at 12 miles after my trip. Using engine braking system I did manage to recharge on a 2 mile downhill stretch of road from 10 miles back to 12. So far so good. Now the bad. For a five seater and potentially a family car, the biggest let down was the boot. -
Recommend Me a Car 4 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Capable of reasonable fuel economy-35 easily achievable-the better the better though Decent gearbox Refined engine that will rev smoothly and cleanly, and not be strained at Mway speeds (ties in with performance this point I suppose) Smooth, light clutch that will stay smooth and light! Heated door mirrors. Excellent brakes, discs all round also, ABS too (I love the brakes in the mk 2 Megane, I like brakes that you only have to sneeze on to put you through the windscreen)Reasonable handling-I used to own a 205 1.6 gti-I would love a real drivers car, but out right handling is not absolutely required. -

1997 Hoanda Accord 4-Cyl - ERG Valve Bench Testing? 17 Aug 2020 (Forum)
Eventually the whole length shown below disappered into the port in the direction of the exhaust and the brake fluid drained away so I'd guess it cleared the blockage. https://www.driveaccord.net/cdn-cgi/image/format=auto,onerror=redirect,width=1920,height=1920,fit=scale-down/https://www.driveaccord.net/attachments/img_3506-jpg.522999/ Now have the valve off and would like to "bench test" it.
