  • Insurance Scam 25 Apr 2018 (Forum)
As I did, the lady in front of me proceeded to slam on her brakes as the light had just turned yellow. I slammed on my brakes and my wheels slid. She jolted forward maybe two feet but my tires slid and I bumped her. There was one other person in the car, who sat in the back.
  • Vauxhall Omega ABS Light 14 Jul 2006 (Forum)
They did not fail it on the Airbag light though this time. I'm told the ABS is additional to the normal braking system, which is all working fine. Before I react & have it looked at & part with cash etc, if I test by braking hard and if the ABS kicks in and it's just a sensor malfunctioning, is my mechanic right that they will fail it next MOT if the light's on?
  • Advice please on clutch problem 1 Mar 2005 (Forum)
This morning was very cold and when I started the car it did not want to move very easily. I thought that the rear brake callipers had locked up, eventually I got the car moving and it felt very sluggish as though the brakes were dragging. Deciding the best thing to do would be to get them checked immediately, I popped into my local brake centre.
  • Omega rammed, lessons learned 3 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Due to possible court case, I'll omit the next bit, but the other chap may end up charged with failing to stop. His explanation? "My brakes failed". I'm 100% certain he hit the accelerator rather than the brake. Results: £1,600 damage to my car. Recurrence of neck injury I'd suffered for years and just had cleared (three months ago).
  • The Hyundai i10 issue 23 Feb 2024 (Forum)
The 2013 Hyundai i10 seems normal with no warning lights on the dashboard, despite having only a small amount of engine oil in the dipstick, empty brake fluid tanks, and empty coolant tanks.  Why is that?  What should I do next?

  • One lady owner ... 14 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Why do garages advertise this as a positive when advertising a used car? To me it means: a) Excessive Clutch/Brake wear B) Short run syndrome (Thirty seconds to local corner shop and back) C) Lots of minor parking dents
  • 1996 Eunos 5 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I've been offered a Eunos for £3500. It's a P reg, less than 10K miles p.a., new hood, cambelts, brakes. Looks in nice condition. Owner is known. Does this seem reasonable? Or should I leave it alone? Thanks X

  • Nissan Qashqai 1.6dci diesel 2015 - Nissan QQ - multiple dash lights 17 Nov 2023 (Forum)
Current fault codes: P0380 - Glow plugs (historic) U0111 - Communication error C1130 - Engine signal (I think this is intake air temperature sensor, because this is historic) C1A26 - ABS (this may be Forward Emergency Braking or Traction) Lights on Dash - S/S failure, battery light, Red EML light, Anti slip light and forward emergency braking light  I think the main issue is U0111 - Communication error.
  • Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class - Speeding when over taking for safety. 28 Jun 2022 (Forum)
I floored my car to make some space so I could move back in safety but he cept on accelerating. I saw a gap behind him so I braked hard but so I could move back in,  but  he braked  just after me matching my cars speed. I was still on the wrong side of the road for what seemed way to long. I was keeping an eye in the drive who was now laughing.
  • Chrysler Grand Voyager LX - 2000 - Parking Brake Issues 2 Jul 2013 (Forum)
I have been unable to find a part number for this clip and so source a replacement. Most of the Voyagers built were of US market origin and so have a foot operated parking brake. The European vehicles (RHD?) had handbrakes and trawling the online parts catalogues for this 'GS' varient show the handbrake assembly and related components but no clip! Can any of the HJ experts shed any light on this and were I might get a part number or replacement clip??
  • Peugeot 309 (1986 - 1993) - Advice on buying an older diesel. 25 Oct 2008 (Forum)
I took it for a test drive and it seemed solid enough (don't have any experience of driving old diesels) though it might need new brakes (I only have modern car brakes to compare it to). The car itself was in really good condition considering its age, it's had 3 owners, original car guide and service history all there (though just stamps, no details).
  • Pulling back in after overtaking 24 Aug 2007 (Forum)
    (b) Now, if the overtaken car doesn't adjust his speed it will take a further 15 seconds before he is back to a TWO second gap. (c) If the overtaken car brakes so he is doing 60mph it will take a further 3 seconds before he is back to a TWO second gap. Food for thought, no? My conclusions are that (a) if someone cuts in on you then you need to brake quite hard, and (b) if you want to overtake you really need to be going significantly faster than the car you want to overtake.

  • protecting new car 23 Jan 2006 (Forum)
There's one thing I already noticed today, which was pretty much the first time I saw the car in daylight since collecting it from the dealership, and that is that the brake discs visible through the alloys are quite rusty. Is that just because they've never been used and will it be cleared off by the friction of the brakes as they get used? I've never really had a car before with brake discs are quite so visible through the alloys, so if an amount of rust is normal, even when new, then I guess that's fine.

  • Private Sale - Let Seller Beware? 21 May 2004 (Forum)
Even worse, I've unknowingly committed an offence under Road Traffic Act 1998 in that it is illegal to sell a car with faults in brakes, tyres, exhaust, lights etc and max fine is £5000!!! Of course, the list of faults on my ex-cars inspection included headlight reflectors, exhaust, tyres and brake problems. Exactly those that make the car 'unroadworthy'.
