100% Electric Renault Zoe

Car companies are making great strides with fuel-saving technology in petrol- and diesel-fuelled cars, but they are no match for an electric car when it comes to cutting emissions, consumption and costs in London. Compare the Renault ZOE with the recently updated Volkswagen Polo 1.2 TSI SE BlueMotion with automatic gearbox and the Polo costs more at £15,585 than the ZOE’s £15,043.

The VW might sneak a small advantage in running costs over a typical 10,000 mile annual mileage, but it will take nearly 15,000 miles and 18 months to claw back the additional cost of buying the Polo. If you travel into London’s Congestion Charge zone, the ZOE becomes the clear winner thanks to its free entry to this zone. For this type of driver, the Renault offers an annual saving of £2048, plus its £542 lower list price that includes the government’s Plug-In Car Grant, which is a very big step ahead of the ZOE’s petrol- and diesel-engined competitors.
