Smokey Rover 1.4 25 - midlifecrisis
Hi all. My wifes R25 Has recently started to emit blue smoke when it's driven off first thing in the morning. It only seems to do it when the engine is stone cold and been left for a considerable period of time.
I once had a Sierra that did this and the valve stem oil seals were replaced.
The cars a 1.4 and I'm wondering what the likely cause is and the probable cost to fix.

Is that the 8 valve or 16.what date is it. I only ask as 8 valve had cam/follower mod but not certain of date. though your point sounds as you mentioned. cannot put a cost to it as certain problems may arise ie cam carrier is specific to head. So if it breaks during removal/refit means new head. same applies to most other parts on this unit.Justs starts the thread I expect others to know more?

It's a 16v, 2001 model. It does suffer from a knocking noise when cold, which I was advised was probably 'piston slap'. However, this recent addition of blue smoke when cold has begun to look expensive.

Hi, I've got the same engine in my 97 214Si and is suffering the same problem. I took it to Rover who said its normal for these engines to burn up to 1 litre of oil every 1000 miles. It started doing it around 40,000 miles. Mine was using a litre every 4-5,000 so didnt show any concern. The car has now just ticked over 95,000 and the problem is no worse and is roughly using the same amount of oil.

I have followed the car with my girlfriend driving it to 6,500 revs (I must have been mad!) and the exhaust is clear when being pushed so I have taken Rovers word for it. Its more than likely nothing to worry about, however I am no mechanic so dont take my word for it!!!

Hi,
The cause of your problem is straightforward. When you switch off an engine it comes to rest in one of two positions- hence the reason starter ring gears only wear opposite each other. When the engine is at rest a number of valves are in an open position. Oil in the camshaft area will then run past the worn seal and down the worn valve guide and drip onto the piston. Hence when you start up, you burn off this residual oil. There is a little trick you can try and thats to stall the engine using clutch/brake rather than stopping the engine and allowing it to rest in its 'natural' position. You may stop the problem by doing this- or even significantly reduce it. Ultimately the cure is to have the head off, replace valve guides/ valves and seals.
Hope this helps

Thanks to all, particularly Robin the Tech. If the problem isn't dealt with, will it be harmful to the engine or can I leave it a while. (Please say it can be left. I've just forked out £9000 on a new kitchen.)

More likely it will harm the cat convertor.

It's probably because it it left standing for a long time and hasn't had the oil changed twice a year. Ive had several 'K' series Rovers, none has ever consumed oil at the rates mentioned here even at 90,000 miles.

When I said 'a considerable period of time', I meant overnight. The car was also serviced a month ago.

I would suggest getting valve seals replaced. Not certain about 25 but 414 cat is around £200 to replace min. Also as someone mentioned. (It is usual for rovers to burn oil on startup and not to worry). this isnt the case and first signs of this should be rectified.
Sorry I didnt reply before but have been on holiday
