Neighbour has a '96 Mondeo 1.8TDi. Not exactly the jewel in Ford's crown, but it serves as transport.
The car smokes like a goodun. I loaded it up with Millers Diesel Power Plus and took it for a blast today, running up and down through the gears to 4200rpm to give it a bit of a decoke but it still smells like a 10 year old transit. I suspect it will take more than a few blasts to get anywhere near a clean exhaust, but we'll see.
Major problem is the lack of power below 2800rpm. My first thought was the AFM so I disconnected this and took it out again. No improvement.
Any other ideas? Low power and black smoke.... Did this model have problems with EGR or not? At a bit of a loss.....

You could try www.fordmondeo.org. This posting for example:

That link to fordmondeo.org is fantastic, thank you. Will give the EGR trick a go later today if I have time, failing which I'll do it next weekend.
Cheers Dylan
