Why don’t car side doors – particularly the driver’s side and the passenger seat – have wipers on the windows? Read more

A shame the late Queen didn't give an opinion on some of the mechanical items. An easily- accessible timing belt might be better than a chain on the Ingenium engine?

Timing chains "should" be designed to outlast the rest of the engine, ie never need changing...

Hi Folks

I'm thinking of buying a new car, but can't decide whether to go for a petrol or hybrid car.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated

Thanks for the comprehensive and useful post, very useful.

NB If you look for a 1.8 Swace or Corolla note that 2023 is critical year as power increased from 122ps to 140ps and started using the latest gen 5 hybrid gubbins. The earlier version can be identified by buttons surrounding the centre info screen....

Hi!

Since 2010 I've owned a 2008 Passat CC with 165k miles under it's belt. For years I've considered selling it, but it owes me nothing and refuses to die, but it isn't without its issue. In a nutshell........ Read more

Thanks for all the replies.

John that's amazing how reliable your car was and interesting to hear you dared to stick to the original cam belt and didn't have issues....

I need to half open the roof to lubricate etc but it won’t stay. Local dealers say a special tool is needed but won’t sell me one…too dangerous they tell me. Any ideas? Read more

My previous one was stolen and indeed the roof stayed open for maintenance but the replacement...a 2016...dosen't. I've contacted the supplying dealers and they will not help. They say it is too dangerous and only a mechanic can do it safely with their special tool. I've managed to get to some hinges and rubbers and hope to figure a way to get to them all.

A few months ago, I recall a poster on here querying why they weren’t getting much interest in a second hand car that they were selling as a private seller. Turns out that (if I recall correctly) they were asking similar money to the traders, who were advertising the same car, mileage and condition.

I’m starting to get my eye in on £8k-£9k cars, with a view to purchasing around August time. Surprised to see plenty of private sellers asking in excess of £1k more than traders, with no recourse for the buyer in the event of any immediate issues post-purchase and no form of warranty.

I’d have expected the private sale cars to be at least 10% - ~£800-£900 cheaper (on a like for like basis in terms of year, mileage, condition, service history etc) compared to those from a motor trader.

Am I just out of touch, having not bought a second hand car in decades?! Read more

I should think that's people who have taken their EV in for a part exchange, just couldn't believe how little they were being offered and decided they'd sell privately. They may have finance on them and are stuck in negative equity for the amount they're trying to sell for.

The increase in energy prices over the last 3+ years has stopped new EVs being the no-brainer they once were and there are more in circulation than the market can now sustain. Brilliant used buys for those that they suit and, presumably, heartbreak for those they used to suit...

Hi guys. I've moved to Halifax, West Yorkshire and I'm wanting to know labour costs in this area from independent garages if I supply my own parts which i like to do so I can buy premium stuff.

If you want the best job done, then DIY. Plenty of YouTube videos.

With regard to buying premium parts, I don’t wish to cause offence, but those are both pretty mundane cars. They’ll run just fine on mundane parts. The main improvement is you’re putting new oil & filters in. The difference between a Bosch part and a Euro Car Parts own brand is negligible.

If you were running a high performance machine/s then go ahead and buy the best.

Most garages I’ve dealt with as a new customer are reluctant to put customer bought parts for reasons outlined. It’s the ramp availability. They won’t know a part is incorrect until the car is on the ramp and in bits. Then, it’s too late and they have to wait for the correct part to arrive. They lose use of the ramp.
