Sunday we did Colchester A12-A120-M11-A14-M6-M54-A41 to Chester 4 hours 40 minutes leavinf at about 08.50.

Return today leaving about 09.40 reverse journey except took A5 from A41 to Cannock J12 but on the M6 the signs said severe congestion J10 south bound.. So took a punt on the nice empty M6 toll and it really was empty! but same journey time.

Very relaxed driving on the Toll road. Reminded me of the Motorways in Portugal. also nearly empty.

Did a similar trip last Xmas from Essex to Anglesey to visit family. M6 going was dire , coming back took the toll . Definitely worth it . Going back in the summer. I’ll be doing the toll both ways.

Probably ( hopefully?) Get John F ranting again but if you or your passenger are disabled you can use the m6 toll for free! Registration takes 5 minutes, we use it every year on our annual journey to the frozen North.....

Hopefully I'll pop me clogs before getting to the point where I can use a pass to avoid paying a tenner.

I've still got a lot of tenners to get rid of the kids inheritance... So might as well use them usefully.....

The concession only applies to the most seriously disabled people, that are able to register the car as disabled and pay no VED - there are plenty of other disabled people who don't qualify.

That's not quite correct.

Vehicles taxed as disabled dont pay as you say, but if you get the enhanced rate of PIP for mobility, DLA (higher rate, mobility)' and certain other benefits it is free,

You apply for a Mobility Exemption Pass - https://www.m6toll.co.uk/mobility-exemption-pass

The person receiving the benefit HAS to be in the car. Not sure how good their cameras are....LOL

Aaaarrrgghhh!! Clearly discrimination against mens sana in corpore sano. And Fort Dunlop is a magnificent piece of durable early C20th architecture which I'm sure orb would have appreciated.

As I am a natural skinflint and very rarely under time pressure, I avoid motorways unless there is no serious alternative. So actually PAYING to use one is out of the question !

Doesn't seem to .make sense.

It makes sense when I dont do it, because Taiwan Freeways arent free, but not using the generally free UK motorways would only make sense if to avoid boredom or some such, not compatible with skinflintery since they save petrol/wear and tear.

I did find constantly being overtaken by HGV's going at the same speed as me irritating though,

There are still quite a few journeys where there is no serious alternative, Ed. I wouldn't go form Cheshire to the Lakes without using the M6, painful tho that might be.

Especially with many roads in a terrible state of repair these days. When I've cycled the 40 miles to my parents' house in south Herts (by car its 37.5 miles), I deliberately avoid as many major-ish roads (obviously including those I'm legally not allowed to cycle on) to avoid the pollution, higher risk of accidents as well as the country lanes being more picturesque, but it certainly is much more of a challenge!

Even more so in a car, given it's far easier to avoid potholes on a bike on such narrow roads than a car.

When I've gone on holiday from Royston to Cornwall and back, I stay on the major routes for the most part unless there's major hold-ups because I just want to get there as quickly as possible, given I'm the only one in the car. Not so bad if you're not in a hurry and you know nicer routes like the back of your hand.

One of the benefits of (now) being a regular cyclist in the region - I now know many alternative routes along country lanes (and which to avoid), just in case when I'm in the car as well as on the bike. Haven't yet been as far east as Colchester on the bike as yet, nearest is Finchingfield.

At least the A14 isn't as bad around the Huntingdon area nowadays with its changes.

Have used the toll for many years, travelling from Cumbria to London to visit family and usually stop at Norton Caines. On a recent visit we used the toll going down but it did make me realise how the toll seems to rise with every trip. Decided to give it a miss coming back because we were passing the M5/M6 junction around midday so should have been quiet. Checked for queues on Google maps which showed it was clear even though the motorway signs said congestion. We sailed through without stopping. Going to use it less from now on as I don't think it is worth 20 quid for a return trip.

As we use the M6 fairly regularly, grown up kids in Liverpool and NE Wales as well as other stuff. In fact we're going up to Liverpool this afternoon.

Will watch what Google Maps say about extra time taken if we use the M6 'Classic' around Brum. Might use the M6Toll if it saves significant time, >10-15 mins, but not otherwise.

We're often towing a caravan so limited to 60 which further reduces the advantage of the Toll.

Decided not to use it on way to Liverpool on Friday and got jam bound.

Used it on the way back as there were warnings of extensive delays on the elevated section.

No slower though if I'd used the A500/A50.

Missed the opportunity as I was wrong laned at J16.

Uh?

Clearly avoiding a toll road is fully compatible with skinflintery, though sometimes it may not be practical.

My point is/was that avoiding motorways in general, in the UK, as you say you do, is NOT compatible with skinflintery.

I'm assuming here that UK motorways are still generally toll-free, because I think I would have heard of a general change, though it isn't very likely to affect me personally.

I must be the only one then. I'm a bit nostalgic about Fort Dunlop. I recall being a kid in the back of the car passing by it in the 60s/ 70's. With my late parents.

And so much of the rest of the industrial heritage. I remember going down the M1 a bit north of Luton and seeing the glow of the brick kilns, also the smell.

I used to regularly go down the M1 - the worst smell was a long descent just north of Sheffield; always a strong pong of gas. Never kew why.

Sometimes we have to go to Chelmsley wood from near Redditch. Either way it's vile. M6 or M42 each as bad. Must be the worst bit of road in the country but the M42 frightens me more.

My main post-industrial memories are

(a) Big marshalling yard the train used to go through on the way to York (somewhere around Darlington I think) where they were cutting up steam locos, probably with carbon air arcs. Very dramatic at night

(b) Similar at Inverkeithing, only with RN ships

(c) Visit to Boness,(where my boat is now) which had a burning bing slap in the centre of town, which I considered as possibly the Worst Place in the World.

(d) Living in Hunslett Grange, Leeds, where the nearby coal fired powerstation was doing something complicated with sewage sludge contaminated with heavy metals

AFAIK none of the shale bings burned for very long after they ceased operation. Certainly I was on top of one of the big Midlothian ones (popular with trials motorcyclists, and I believe a listed monument) late last year and was quite cold.

I'd guess the burning colliery bings would still be burning if they hadnt been physically removed, which must have been a fun job

You should have seen the Glasgow suburb of Polmadie which had a blast furnace in the middle of it up till the late 50s. Dixon's Iron Works known locally as Dixon's Blazes because of the reflection of the furnaces on the clouds in the sky. Molten slag was taken by a little train to be tipped into a nearby swamp. Quite spectacular. All surrounded by suburban houses.

Camped by a jetty somewhere near Barrow-in-Furness that seemed to have been "built" from fuzed molten slag in similar (and presumably similarly spectacular) fashion, though a while ago.

Though things are mostly cleaned up at home (Boness can still be a bit acrid local to the iron foundry) I probably get much worse air pollution these days, but its Chinese
