Independent garage labour costs around Halifax, - Gordon the golfer

Hi guys. I've moved to Halifax, West Yorkshire and I'm wanting to know labour costs in this area from independent garages if I supply my own parts which i like to do so I can buy premium stuff.

I have a renault megane and a vauxhall zafira diesel.

How much should i be looking to pay (LABOUR ONLY) for

- Oil and oil filter change?

- oil, oil filter and air filter change?

- oil, oil filter, air filter, pollen filter and fuel filter change?

- Front discs and pads?

Best thing you can do is to ask your new neighbours if there is someone they recommend and then ask those garage people.

Those are all pretty standard jobs which will have pretty standard job times. All you need to know is the local hourly rate, which will clearly be highest at dealerships with a palace to support, and lowest at back-street places with lower overheads. As has been said, you have to ask around - word of mouth may be the most reliable source, especially for dodgy ones. Or you could just wander around your new neighbourhood looking at appearances, tho that can be a bit misleading.

As a local taxi driver where they get their car serviced. Guarantee it'll be the cheapest and best.

I would check with any garage that they are happy to fit customer supplied parts. A lot of them won’t do it.

Because they don't want you kicking off if they don't fit or they fall apart. Better to just tell them what brands you want or to go to somewhere like.a Bosch service centre.

in the past when my car failed mot i asked garage to order all the premium brand parts which they said they did. turned out it was 100% comline

I am on first-name terms with my local indy here in Cheshire. He swears that he only fits parts he trusts, as most of the rest are 'orap'. If you find one of his kind to do the work you shouldn't need to bother to buy your own parts (and hope they are the right ones).

If you buy the parts and expect a garage to fit them, and there's subsequently a problem it can get messy because who's responsible for any susbesquent damage and the garage would be fully entitled to charge you once again for the work they had to repeat because the parts were wrong or faulty.

Who pays when the car is sitting blocking their ramp for an extra 2 or 8 hours if parts supplied turn out to be wrong.

Normal servicing if you're buying the parts you might as well roll your sleeves up and do the work yourself, for free,

Even if you do find a garage that will fit your supplied parts, I imagine they will charge you a higher labour rate as they won't be making any margin on the parts.

As above. Garages mark up parts to cover their time in ordering and dealing with the mistakes when the wrong/damaged parts are sent.

My local indie in Leeds now charges £60 an hour. Small outfit with a unit large enough for 3-4 cars and 2 staff.

Again as above my friend is a one man band with a 2 car unit, he charges £65. Per hour ( guildford, Surrey), he's not keen on fitting customer supplied parts but he will providing he knows them.

If you want the best job done, then DIY. Plenty of YouTube videos.

With regard to buying premium parts, I don’t wish to cause offence, but those are both pretty mundane cars. They’ll run just fine on mundane parts. The main improvement is you’re putting new oil & filters in. The difference between a Bosch part and a Euro Car Parts own brand is negligible.

If you were running a high performance machine/s then go ahead and buy the best.

Most garages I’ve dealt with as a new customer are reluctant to put customer bought parts for reasons outlined. It’s the ramp availability. They won’t know a part is incorrect until the car is on the ramp and in bits. Then, it’s too late and they have to wait for the correct part to arrive. They lose use of the ramp.
