Hi there.

I've been going online without much luck with prices ranging from moderate to scary. Just hoping someone can advise on this.... Read more

Thanks all for the responses. They've been very helpful and narrowed down my options. Will see if I can get this looked at for a repair maybe at the next service, especially if that's a feasible option. After that it's a case of paying the price or telling them to disconnect it..

Thanks again....

Anyone on this link interested in joining a campaign to urge the mayor of London to give exemptions to ULEZ going forward, at least when extended next year to whole of Greater London! Or to urge financial assistance to small businesses dependent on vehicle use eg Street food traders like my son; so they can purchase vehicles compliant with ULEZ and therefore less polluting.

I made a similar appeal by letter to the Mayor's office prior to ULEZ commencing but it was not accepted. At that time they said they were asking for more help from Central Govt to help fund changes of vehicle. This time i think a bigger more concerted campaign needed, with a petition. Read more

Earlier this year Honest John reported on the delays with paper medical driving licence applications, see: https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/driving-1/2022-05/dvla-driving-licence-backlog-for-motorists-with-medical-conditions-up-65-per-cent-in-12-months/

We’re revisiting this issue and would like to hear from readers currently facing long delays. Please submit a question via Ask HJ (https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/askhj/) if you’re affected or post a comment here if you prefer.... Read more

Hello everyone, first post here,

I'm looking for some advice, due to health problems I'm struggling to use the clutch as I have left leg problems so am looking to get an automatic, the problem is I'm struggling to find much information apart from horror stories, basically I'm on a limited budget of around £2000 and needing a mid sized family car, I do around 10k a year but need something I can depend on, I know nothing is 100% reliable but also don't want something that's giving me problems every few months does anyone have any suggestions on what sort of car I should be looking at thank you in advance... The OP may not be able to source a car within their price range with a reliable CVT.

With the OP's budget set at £2000 reliability will be down to pure luck and nothing to do with the brand of car or type of auto transmission....

Both these are from YouTube.

First is of the legendary Ruf CTR "Yellowbird"(*) at the 'ring in 1987. What strikes me looking at the interior footage is just how hard the driver is working at the wheel, like he is only just managing to keep a degree of control over the beast!. Much respect though, it does look a huge handful!... Read more

Like a lot of people my age I suspect, I fell in love with the 206 Dino after watching Tony Curtis tooling around in a red one in 'The Persuaders'. Stunningly pretty car although nowadays if I was offered one of either the Dino or Roger Moore's Aston Martin DBS I suspect I would struggle to make my mind up which to have.

Still, not a dilemma I'm likely to encounter is it?

New cars are becoming less affordable because of their over reliance on technology which few buyers want or need, yet basic items such as a CD player and even a handbook are disappearing. Not everyone has or wants a smartphone.

Add to that the uncertainty over whether to go electric and it is no wonder that people are keeping their existing cars or buying secondhand. The manufacturers must start producing the cars we want, not the cars they think we ought to want. Read more

On the other hand I would not buy a car that was not connected to an on board SIM or my own smartphone. There’s tons of information available that keeps me out of traffic jams and lets me find the cheapest petrol station in the tap of an icon not to mention the true safety equipment that micro processors control and keep those who cannot drive out of trouble.

The cost of a new car spread over the 10 plus years of its life doesn’t compare to the government cash cow that motorist have become starting with massive taxes every time you fill up at the station then add road fund taxes, not forgetting luxury taxes on cars over £40,000 and then top it all of with a congestion charge. Only be a matter of time once they realises there’s not enough high sulphur cars to make it worth while before low sulphur zones just become come another tax for all cars.

Still look on the bright side once they get all the poor drivers off the roads the rich drivers will be able to go about their way a bit faster including of course yours and mine MP along with the local town counsellors.

Had a Mazda 5 2013 for nearly 6 years. Bought with 16,000 miles now has just reached 50,000. I’m in two minds whether now is a good time to part exchange. Though it’s been a good runner and well service, it could be a good time to sell. I want to be prepared, due to wear and tear age etc.

I have two kids aged 7 and 8, and I think I could get about £6000.

Look forward to reading some useful advice. Read more
