There has been a lot of comment about new car prices on this forum. However things seem to have gone quiet on the 95g issue which could see huge payments required by manufacturers. Are these a driver in current price increases?
I know that manufacturers can pool fleets to reduce the average but even so some faced potentially huge tax bills. Are these already being passed on in increases prices?

The particular way the 95g tax works is to apply it in the first instance to the manufacturers. How they pass it on is up to them. It’s also potentially huge sums. Fleet News ( pre COVID ) estimated that VAG might be liable for £1.4 bn (yes, billion) euros.

Ouch.

So, starting a new job next month and that is going to entail 2 days in the office and the rest work from home (I do feel pretty lucky for that). So the office is a 3 hour round trip on the motorway.

My fun consideration is that I currently have a 2008 Honda Accord 2.4 TD estate that was bought as an emergency stop gap as got a good deal when the VW Transporter decided to drop its guts everywhere. Now, while it is a nice car, it is feeling a little tired and is quite high mileage and I worry that when I start piling it on we may start to get a few wobbles.... Read more

The 1.0 VW engine in my 2017 Toledo cruises at 70mph with ease, returns over 50mpg and has sufficient power when needed for a spurt of acceleration. At the motorway speed it is smooth & fairly quiet.

Before you remove the radio to see the label on the chassis, try the following to get the display to show the serial number:

1. With the unit OFF, press and hold the preset buttons 1 & 6 (you may need to try 2 & 6), then turn the unit on....

I'm down to below 3mm on my front tyres, sooner rather than later I will need to get them replaced. I'm tied between Summer tyres and All Season tyres. Are all season tyres really worth it in the UK? Read more

I'm a great fan of the Michelin Cross Climate. Good in ice/snow winter weather but fabulous in our usual Yorkshire driving rain. They also have stood up well to hot continental long distance driving. Tread still looking good with over 30k miles on them (55 profile). The best bit - they have been soooo quiet on my Superb.

Hi All

So coming home from holiday in the 3rd lane I went past a bridge with speed camera van on it , looked down and it showed 80mph, will speedo be correct and if a bit of leeway do you think I will get a ticket ? Thanks Read more

Engineer Andy

Your speedo is probably reading slightly high (some quick Googling suggests maybe ~2-3mph)

I would say that most cars tend to read higher than 2-3mph over at 70-80 on the speedo - my car is more like 4-5mph over then, but far less at 30 to 40mph. Satnavs can (if good quality) give a more accurate reading, but even then I wouldn't rely on them...

Hello, I was on a motorway today and a hgv pulled out in front of me in the outside lane and I had too put my brakes on hard, as I was doing this the car felt like it was skidding or like it was on ice. Very weird feeling. I didn't go out of my lane or anything but I felt like I had too adjust my steering too countersteer it. I then went onto a b road and tried braking from high speed again and it feels the same. Almost like the wind is pushing against one side of the car and its making me countersteer against it. It only does this when braking hard at high speed (60mph+) the abs is working properly as I did an emergency stop the other day and I heard the pump activate and no skidding. Any idea why this is happening at high speed? Is it anything too worry about? Read more

I will get it looked at but if they can't find anything then the general consensus seems to be that it's normal

Put it this way, if they dont look in the right places they wont find it, so as BJ said it may need the camber and other settings checked, as said lowering can cause other problems...

Hello. Many years ago I got the advice I needed from this forum and that's resulted in me not purchasing a car since 2006, so I really need some fair opinions on where I should turn now.

At the time I wanted a brand new, first time car for two learner teenagers. I set my criteria and my thread here lead me to buy a 1l Toyota Yaris with a fairly basic speck. The car stayed in the family and since 2003 it's never let us down. I've just handed that over to someone else to carry on motoring, but I've been happy driving this as needs be.... Read more

Thank you all for the input. I feel a bit more confident now. To be honest it's going to come down to what we can get in the timeframe. As I say, outlay, fine performance, spec and economy details etc. are less important than just not making a stupid choice. We need a car available 24/7 and to have peace of mind that it'll be a solid car to fit our requirements.

Really appreciate everyone's time and comments..
