Hi ,

I've seen a car advertised locally which I am interested in. It is listed at an attractive price.... Read more

My advice?

If it were £1800 at risk I’d be wary but at £18,000 leave well alone. Only buy in a private sale if the V5 is registered to the seller at the sellers address. If it’s not then the car may not legally be theirs to sell or more likely it’s a dealer trying to flog a car without honouring their post sale legal obligations or pay any tax.

No V5 in their name at the address you view then no buying dis.

The only time I’ve bought a car in similar circumstances was if it was someone I knew well. I did buy a nearly new Honda Accord from a deceased mans estate but the relative who was selling it had registered it in his name first so the V5 was present and correct. This is what I’d want here. If it is their car to sell then tell them to register it to themselves at their own address then when you view and do an HPI check (using the vin no too) you’ll have the backing of HPI’s insurance. It won’t apply if you buy and the car isn’t registered to the seller.

I'm not one for complaining about the subject of parking, but my road has become a centre for neighbourly disputes about the increase in vehicles per property over the past few years. I've only the one vehicle where others have two or three and have seen a few rows brew between households. I just wanted to see what thoughts may be made of the below scenario.

There are eight detached houses in the cul de sac where I live. All were built c1998 with at least a single garage, the biggest houses have a double garage.

The retired 70+ year old divorcee over the road from us, house identical to mine, uses her single garage but compared with its 2010 predecessor her 70reg Audi A3 is a tight fit. Another who used to leave his two cars on his drive with junk in the garage has downsized to one car and now garages it. ...

Just had the caravan serviced in the hope of some use this year. The chap said the tyres should be replace as they are nearly out of date. There is lots of tread on them and no visible damage, so am at a loss.

Is it the tyre manufacturers way of generating business or is there some credence to these dates?... Read more

Most commercial vehicles have twin rear wheels so less of an issue with a single tyre failure.

A commercial vehicle starts from something like a Fiesta or Corsa van and goes right up to the biggest trucks. Twin rear wheels only become commonplace on vehicles with a GVW of more than 3.5t, so there are significantly more commercial vehicles with single rather than twin rear wheels. ...

Hi all heard a rattle from my exhaust recently and had a look under and saw some kind of thin metal sheeting that looks like it has come loose (Lots of flooding here and since I drive at night a lot I sometimes hit larges puddles at speed, the force of the water could have done this maybe?) Images are linked on imgur.

I had my clutch done about a month ago it's nothing from that is it? Looks pretty new that bit of metal. ... Read more

Whether or not its an MOT fail, it is an essential part.

Yesterday I had started and stopped my car a couple of times and then the engine would not turn over, a garage towed me and fitted a new starter motor. All is working fine now.

Although this would not have helped me yesterday I am looking to buy a jump starter and battery charger in case I am away from home and need one.... Read more

I'm just back from my first B service and my car has covered just under 28000 miles . It's 2 1/2 years old. Dealership have told me I need to replace both the pads and disks on my front wheels, at a cost of around £500. I had expected to get a little more mileage before I needed new pads, never mind disks (I am not a racing driver :-) I drive mainly about town with a little motorway driving thrown in.) They have also marked the rear pads and brakes at "amber" and told me these will need to be replaced shortly. I was so annoyed I wrote to MB directly. They referred me back to the dealership of course as well as some waffle about not being able to identify an expected lifespan of their pads an brakes, but I did manage to get a little technical info from them. So just in case it is useful to anyone else:

New front disks have a thickness of 36mm, and are worn/need replaced at 34mm. (Mine are apparently 33.63mm)... Read more

Do ventilated disks rot significantly from the inside?

If I had them I'd probably rust treat the insides, but that would be tricky so I'd guess no one bothers...

Like many of us who park in car parks, often get a small dent from the car door parked alongside.

Has anyone tried these Dent puller/lifter kits with their various size pads and hot glue, to pull these dents out with success. Read more

Better to remain dent free in the first place. I choose my space carefully. At supermarkets I always park well away from the entrance, and never next to another car. It takes an extra 30 or 40 seconds to get to the entrance. In busier car parks I never park next to cars with 'kids on board's signs, or simply anything that looks like it could be driven by an idiot.

My current car is five years old and dent free. ...

Hopefully someone can help. My I800 (its rear wheel drive) squeaks from the offside front wheel when I turn right. It happens at any speed upto around 40mph. As soon as any steering input to go even slightly right is applied, it's there. It even does it when parking it!

Jacked it up, it's a heavy vehicle this one! Found that the abs ring was touching the sensor at one point on the rotation hence the squeek... wheel bearing seems fine, no play or roughness.

Cleaned the ring up as best as I can and put a dab of wd40 on the ring. Bit of cleaning later and the squeek has gone. Abs seems to be behaving a bit better too. ...

Hello, let me introduce my selve. I’m a dutchy living in france having some old english motorcycles an a jumpy that wont start.
Let me start from of the beginning, driving back home i lost power and rpm, could get it going but finaly i had to stop. I squeezed the rubber ball and suprisingly i had all back. I hurried home. The ne t day it only runs stationair and than it stopped like that. I checked the system and have the following codes, P1351 and P1198. The first code says IDM imputcircuit malfuction/ ignition coil control circuit high voltage, the second pump rotor control underfueling.
I have changed the fuel filter and the high fuel pump pressure regulator. In the fuse box are two fuses for the fuelpump which is in the fuel tank, only checking the parts manual according the VIN there is no fuel pump in the tank.
When i cranck the engine i see no fuel movement. The local garage advised to change the BSM, i have resetted it but still no running engine
Battery is new, anyone a suggestion what it could be?
Thanks Read more
