Hello,
the youngest daughter has a 14 plate 1.5 dci Clio with 30k on the clock. The cam belt schedule is 70 - 90k or 6 years, whichever is sooner. So time wise it's due for a change now, though mileage wise it's way off. l know this is a subjective area & for piece of mind it should be changed due to the consequences of not doing so. ... just put car back together after replacing head gasket and heater matrix. lots of smoke and tapping when i first fired it up but now settled down. also fitted a new battery and secondhand alternator but don't think it is charging as when i attached a volt meter it is reading 12.15v when engine is not running but 11.95v when engine is running. also car is ticking over at 1000rpm and climate control is not blowing when i turn up blowers (don't know if linked). if alternator is at fault is it just likely to be the regulator. any help appreciated. update: have 14.45v at battery now with engine running so alternator good. still no blowers so i must have not connected something back up? with hind sight i didn't have to disconnect any of the heater box wiring to gain access to the matrix.
Waiting at an indy garage yesterday for a job to be done on our car, noticed a man bought an 11 plate Astra Diesel in, judging by the work being done it was a pre MOT, and whilst there they performed a forced regen on the car.
Basically the chap plugged his Netbook sized computer in and the engine gradually revved up to what sounded like 2500rpm, after a minute or so a decent volume of blue/black smoke emitted from the exhaust for roughly a minute and then the engine continued at that same rev rate for about 30 mins and then it gradually revved itself down to a normal tickover, during this time the mechanic periodically put his hand near the exhaust to check temps.... I don't have a Diesel car modern enough for a dpf (had a Citroen C2 VTS Hdi for a while, like Bromp's Diesel it was trouble free), but interesting how regularly the DPF's on some posters cars are regenerating, one must assume it's not just the system relying on build up, there must be some mileage or maybe type of motoring factored into the schedule.
My lorry has now covered some 250k kms over the last 21 months, i've probably driven 60/70% of that distance, hasn't needed a forced regen at all, to my knowledge (dash warning) its regenerated passively about 4 times, twice i've had to cancel regens soon as they started due to the nature of my work, usually resuming shortly after you start driving again, only once have i needed to prolong a journey for 10 mins or so to allow a regen to complete...so i'd hazard a guess its regenerated a total of maybe 8 times over approx 150k miles....

From Oct 21, our current family VW Golf TDI will be subject to the ULEZ now being extended to the north circular. Looking for advice on buying a used car for the family (I have a 2yr old and 4yr old). Budget is £15-20k, and needs to be a load carrier for family holidays and weekend jaunts, as well as for the weekly taxi runs to various kid clubs and shopping.
We're ruling out diesels as I don't want to run into the same problem a few yrs down the line, and perfer to avoid SUVs. Market for hybrids to suit budget and needs is limited, so looking at petrol. Perfer nearly new to keep up with any likely regs (no more than 3yr old cars). Any recommendations?... Read more
I think we are at cross purposes sorry, I only meant in terms of size category. Easiest to do with the Germans! Guess making the model classes simple was part of their idea..
Whenever people are asking for car recommendations they’re often told to avoid fords eco boost engines as they’re unreliable, a little unfair..? Yes they had problems with corroding degas pipes affecting the cooling which would then overheat and then cause engine problems ( as any engine would without coolant) afaik this has been sorted with ford even replacing engines foc in some cases, I’m on my third car powered by an eco boost engine with no problems whatsoever including engines, has enough time now passed to allow some leniency towards the ecoboost? I've read about people having problems more than once with Ecoboost engine. Anyway, plenty more fish in the sea instead. If you like it buy it, if you don't just buy something else.
Hello! I’m looking for some advice from the Honest John community.
Is there a small car that can really do it all? One that is just as comfortable in the city as it is on long motorway drives?
I live in London, and am looking for something that is small and easy to park in the city, but that is also comfortable clocking up motorway miles at the weekend, and has space enough for my camping gear - all for £6K. Does this car exist??
It needs to be ULEZ compliant, petrol (or hybrid, though guessing unlikely in my budget) and have good visibility, and to be the dream car could it also be a little cool?
I currently own a 2011 Hyundai i10 - it’s been pretty good though lacking oomph on the motorway. Recently been having an intermittent starting issue that three garages haven’t been able to fix, so think it’s time for something new.
Any advice or ideas would be much appreciated, along with tips on what’s most important to look for (is age more important than mileage?). Read more
Just clicked that you’ve an old shape i10. Why not simply upgrade to the next gen model from 2014 on? These are brilliant little cars with more space than your current version plus the 4cyl 1.2 is surprisingly capable at motorway speeds. I really rate them.
