Watched Rip Off Britain this morning and there was a bloke who values his car at say £17k due to what was recommended by a comparison site.
He makes a claim and the loss adjuster says it’s worth more at say £21k and as such they only paid out for the £17k.
Hmm, if I put SWMBOs Nissan Note in as £30k and it gets stolen then I will expect a pay out of that amount!
Unless of course the insurance company not only wants their slice of cake, but they want to eat it as well! :-) Read more
Anyone notice the advice regarding using premium fuel has changed in the Ask HJ section ?
"There is no independent data or research which shows that premium fuel is worth the extra money over standard fuel. Shell may promote the fact that their V Power is better for an engine but there is nothing to verify this. For the vast majority of cars on the road (performance cars and some classics excluded), standard 95RON fuel is more than adequate. As an independent consumer website, our aim is to ensure readers aren't out of pocket - the tiny economy savings you may see from premium fuel would not justify the extra price per litre in our opinion." I worked in the additives industry a few years ago. There is a big difference in the detergent quality used and also the dosing. (Regular branded fuels have a keep clean dose, super fuels have a clean up dose). The additive companies run fleets of field test vehicles to validate their formulations.
Chief Executive Mike Hawes think outside the BOX.!!!!!!!! The scrappage scheme would only help the economies of France, Germany, Spain, etc as we make virtually no EV cars in the UK. Now if the Government had only got it's finger out and encouraged Tesla to build it's Giga Factory in the UK (4-6000 new high tech. jobs) rather than Germany ( built with massive EU cheap loans) that would be a different matter. The only way the Government can help the UK motoring industry is to implement a scrappage scheme that is only applicable to vehicles manufactured in the UK. That may at least go a little way to stop the closure of the Vauxhall, Nissan and Toyota plants here. Even apply the scrappage to ICE vehicles because there virtually the only ones manufactured here and are still going to be made till 2035. As can been seen after the pandemic it will be factories owned by foreign countries that are closed her not in their own countries. If the government does the above Chief Executive Mike Hawes would be jumping for joy and doing backward somersaults because the future for the UK motor industry would look great. Read more
The Tories have always been a 'service sector' government hence the decline in our manufacturing industries. Scrapage shemes are not the solution as those whose cars that are likely to meet the scrappage scheme criteria are going to be older cars worth virtually nothing. These people are likely not to have the large deposits needed for EV ownership and are not going to get themselves into large scale debt to purchase a new vehicle with a promise of £2,000 off a new vehicle of which any customer regardless of scrappage can negiotiate with all dealers. WHat is needed is a VAT cut of at least 5%. What Sunak has failed to see is that by reducing the VAT on new cars not only does it kickstart the auto industry but the government stand to gain massive revenues from VAT and tax which far outweighs the very little revenue they are reaping at the moment with flat new car sales and high second hand car sales! Just like the Covid outbreak in which the government failed to implement a lock down until the last hour, Boris and co will wait until there are mass redundancies in the automotive sector until they pull their finger out and offer an incentive to get customers back in to the showrooms.
Long story short.
Involved in 3 car non fault accident on 27th January. Originally went via a claims management solicitor who had the car independently inspected and deemed it repairable with a 64% repair to value ratio. Spoke with my insurer who advised under their policy my car would be deemed a write off - did I want to pursue claim through them instead?... Read more
The value of the car is a side issue.
The point is that, even if only by oversight, the OP has not declared Fixed Penalties which materially affect the premium. Under insuring is always likely to result in a proportionate reduction in payout and I'd be amazed if the insurer's terms and conditions don't allow for this. ...

You will struggle to find a petrol XC70 in that price bracket - they only sold about 3 covering those years and for good reason. They're not very good, cost loads to tax and drink like a fish. The diesel suits the car much better and is arguably more reliable than the petrols as well.
I posted earlier about changing my SLK for an e class, in the back there are two black buttons on the doors (one either side) and I can find no reference to what they are for on line or in the manual. I've pressed them several times and it's definitely not an ejector seat. Anybody any ideas? Read more
Try pressing them with the engine running. They might lower the rear side windows.
My thoughts too. Also try with the roof down, I reckon they might close the windows while the roof is down.
Hi all,
Looking at changing my car to an estate for the simple reason of practicality with boot space. Ideally I want a very efficient estate as my daily commute is a 100mile round trip and 85% of that journey is on roads averaging between 60-75mph. Reading through reviews I know there are a lot of options and some of the more favourable reviews seem to lean towards a Skoda Superb, Skoda Octavia, BMW 3 Series Efficient Dynamics, VW Passat GTE or Seat Leon ST. ... You’ve mentioned the Passat GTE PHEV. Can you charge it at work? If you can’t but do charge overnight at home, you’re only going to cover around 1/4 of your daily mileage on electricity.
If that’s the case, I’d definitely go with a diesel.

But for now, please ban this account and goodbye for now Read more
OK, will do Sam. Good luck and I hope the mental health forum gives you more help than we have been able to.

Why would you even go with what a comparison site says?
Plus you can alter their predefined value as you proceed.
