Consider this scenario: visitors turn up at a resort or beauty spot a few hours from home.

Knowing pubs and cafes are shut, they maybe brought a flask of tea or bottle of lemonade.... Read more

All true. My only contention is with those visiting the beach. I understand we have to start the economy up again, no doubt about it. The latter is vital to the country, the former is frivolous and ill-judged.

Following on from a previous thread about ancient battery chargers being made in England, we have recently renewed our central heating boiler together with a digital programmer / timer . The removed timer was the old style rotary clock variety with adjustable “fingers” . Still worked perfectly when removed . I checked inside the case and it was dated 1988 . I think I’ve had my money’s worth . Read more

It's nice to save money keeping these old lumps going, but one problem is that those savings may be cancelled out by their relative inefficiency.

Hopefully one good thing to come out of this is that people will have fewer meetings, and therefore not need to travel so much because they can do more of their work from home.

A curse of modern society is that there is far too much time wasted in meetings. Either people sit round a table and make stupid decisions that none of them would have made on their own; or they disagree and don't come to a conclusion at all....

Hi all hope someone may be able to shed some light for me:

Ford Focus, 2012, 1.6 petrol with just over 60k on clock.

Recently serviced (oil change) in March 20, timing belt and pump changed Sept 19.

Recently, when driving over 30mph I experience a squeaking noise, quite slight (can be hidden by a low volume conversation in the car). It is not heard at low speeds below 30mph. Sounds like it is coming from front of car inside the air con or even in engine bay... I’ve had a general google search and all sorts of areas come up from brakes to belts.

Anyone else experienced similar at a similar age of their Focus or Ford? I’m going to get it diagnosed next week but any pre thoughts very welcome! Thank you Read more

Concrete, perhaps we have slightly different interpretations of 'Fact' - I mean correct, verifiable, if you prefer scientific, fact. You seem to be accusing the media of publishing non-fact, when I suspect you mean partial truth. Hard to get every relevant fact into a 30-minute bulletin for example.

Maybe your circle of friends agree on that ? How would you all get on living in Russia, perhaps, where it was once said there was no Izvestia in Pravda, and vice versa (one means Truth, the other News) ?...

Must admit to being ever so slightly chuffed. Glad I bought two now. (As was mentioned, I got the extra one for the ring terminal lead for the Mrs. car - but it'll also serve as an inexpensive spare).

For a lot of people, including me if I was still working, doing 4 x 10 hour days per week is better than doing 5 x 8 hour days. That means an extra day off and less commuting. It won't suit everyone. For instance if the nature of the work means that 8 hours is quite enough for one day or if you live so close to work that there's minimal saving in commute time, there's less benefit from doing a 4-day week. There's still that extra day off though!

I used a 40 hour week as an example but I know that a lot of people have a 73 hour basic week.

Morning Gents (and Ladies)

I have obtained a good replacement drivers side driveshaft for my Connect which I will be fitting at the weekend. A couple of questions, firstly is it correct that the drivers side shaft does NOT have a snap ring where it pushes into the gearbox and is held in place by the intermediate bearing carrier? I understand the passenger side DOES have a snap ring.... Read more

I would have thought there would be snap rings both sides too but a transit forum maintains there is only one on the near side shaft and the Haynes manual says 'if working on the left hand driveshaft, ensure that the inner cv joint is fully pushed into the transmission, so that the retaining circlip locks into place in the differential gear' This suggests there is no snap ring on the right driveshaft. Unfortunately the Ford dealership is closed!
