I take my car for its MOT and annual service on the same day. The MOT renewal may be deferred, but what about the annual service? Read more

During this self isolation period and this nice weather we have I decided to wash our vehicles today. All fine. I use a proprietary brand of car wash/wax which always does the job well. When drying off I noticed a small blob of material on the roof. It has gone quite hard though not solid and appears to have been sticky, like tree resin. No trees near the car or haven't parked under any that I can recall. Haven't actually used the car for 10 days anyway. I got some of it with my finger nail but don't really want to scrape it off. I am thinking of white spirit or methylated spirit to clean it off. I will try some on a blind spot of paintwork first. Any ideas from the forum. Maybe a problem that has been solved previously by someone. Your comments gentlemen please.

I’d bet that what you are dealing with is pine resin. Maybe you parked close to a pine tree for a while without realising it. We have a Scots pine next to our driveway and our cars stand out underneath it. During the summer, dollops of resin on the roofs of our cars are a constant issue. We also have to deal with hefty deposits of wood pigeon poo - but I digress.

I tried various solvents and liquids to remove it and my solution is meths. I’ve used it on several cars over the years with no ill effects on paintwork, so rest easy that you will not damage yours.

Well I bought one for a little Peugeot Ion which suffered hugely from condensation in the autumn as we didn't use the heating (due to range) and it made an instant difference. Got others for a Renault Twingo and the kids' old Citroen C1 (with semi-leaky boot). If placed on the dashboard and properly dried, then they certainly cleared the problem up. Obviously less humid now. And obviously if you have a leaky car, sorting that out first is important but even new cars can suffer from condensation in the sun. So I would recommend!

Noticed today on the BBC website that garages (not just petrol stations) are one of the businesses that are exempt from the shutdown and are allowed to stay open. Indeed, Kwik Fit and national Tyres are both open today. This seems a little confusing/contradictory given the advice to stay at home. If the governement endorses garages staying open does this mean it's okay to use them? If not then what's the point?

any thoughts? Read more

Hello. Recently purchased this 6 yrs old, 59,000m car. Due to the well-known problem with some Ecoboost engines failing due to coolant system component flaw (which Ford will compensate for if occurs), I asked Ford for a free inspection of the coolant system on the ground that if it fails it will likely cost them much more than the cost of the inspection to rectify (in some cases a new engine). They refused.

As this engine can and has catastrophically failed due to coolant loss, including engine-bay fire, an inspection seems perfectly reasonable to me - but Ford wants £77. I made clear it's only that system I want checking. The car's running fine, but given the expense and inconvenience if it DID fail for this reason, from the customer's perspective it seems reasonable - or am I expecting too much?... Read more

The 1.0 Ecoboost engine are not catching fire. There have been some problems with the 1.5 Ecoboost engines causing fires but mostly these have been in other countries. And Ford have said if you have a failed Ecoboost engine they will look at helping the owners.

Just finished working part time at a garage/filling station whose somewhat elderly owners took no action to protect their workforce, eg providing sanitiser, PPE, notices to customers, etc.

Disappointed that some customers were still coming in for only £10 of fuel at a time rather than filling up to reduce their frequency of potential exposure.

My garage and local shops still had good stocks of food, etc, while local supermarkets were being emptied - people not thinking laterally. Read more

That is really a shocking news. But i read all comments and now I am very satisfied. Actually I am also a animal lover and I have pets in my house. So thanks for discussing.

Yeah, rest easy ORB. You didn't. For the record I had nothing to do with your temporary break from the forum here. As far as I'm concerned you're entitled to your opinion no matter how much I might disagree with it. No need to apologise at all, but apology absolutely appreciated nonetheless.

Take it easy. Mark. :-D

My Dads automatic Mk6 Astra suddenly seized up over the weekend, no warning signs, just heard some slight metalic rattling, drove it about a mile to his nearest garage and it completely seized up en route with smoke pouring out of the engine. It only had 60k on the clock. Our local garage is saying it is a suspected head gasket but will cost over a grand to investigate it further. To repair would be around 2 grand to change the head gasket, but they reckon more significant damage was done and recommend an entire new engine, at roughly 3-4 grand cost. Does this sound about right? They had a quick look, no real investigation so far. The car is worth maybe 3 grand and I am recommending he scraps it over replacing the engine but just want to make sure the garage is quoting a reasonable price and we make the right decision. I just went back to the garage now, managed to start the car and it sounded okay now the engine has cooled down, if that means anything. Any help would be appreciated. Read more
