Was parked up in a spare parking bay in a local petrol station today whilst the wife popped in to get something from their shop (it's an M&S store and she likes their tinned tuna) ... and watching the queues for the pumps slowly move forward has made me think.

(Incidentally, the queues moves much more slowly in this particular outlet due to everyone doing their M&S shopping whilst their car sits at a pump preventing anyone else from filling up)... Read more

Singapore uses road pricing. All the cars and motorcycles are fitted with a gadget for that. They also have an auction system if you want to buy a car. Only a certain number of cars are allowed to be registered each year and purchasers have to bid to be allowed to register one. Mind you Singapore is a special case as it is so small and congested, however it certainly is well organised. I only visit there as a tourist so I may have got some details wrong. No doubt someone who has lived there will be along soon to update us.

So we brought my son a 2008 fiesta. It is a 1.4 tdci. It ran fine for a couple of weeks and has now consistently started coming up with the message Engine system fault and runs very badly in Limp Home Mode. No fault codes come up on the dash.

We've changed fuel filter, and injectors and checked the EGR is not blocked and is functioning... Read more

If bought from a trader why not take it back? If less than 6 months you have pretty good rights.

Hi all,
I'm looking for your help with a very serious issue, which looks very minor in the first place.

I recently stopped in a bus stop for a few seconds to drop off a passenger. A few days later, a PCN came to our address. But because my wife is the registered keeper of the car, the PCN is issued to her name despite me being the driver at the time. For clarification, this is the only car we own and we share it together.

The problem here is that, for a very specific reason, this PCN could have very serious consequences for my wife. So I need to change the name on the PCN to myself because I was the driver of the car at the time and I have 3 witnesses (who were in the car at that time) to testify that. However, the issuing council says that according to the London Authorities Act 1996 (amended in 2000) the owner will be liable for any PCNs issued to this vehicle. But I know that the council has the right to change it, should they wish to do so. I just need to find a way to convince them and they should appreciate that, in this particular case, the consequences for my wife will be far greater than just the financial liabilities.

Does anyone know what ground I should base my argument on and how possibly I can change the name on the PCN? Any advice is highly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Hello. Wondering if anyone can help. My VW polo started to make a growling noise when going up a hill around a month ago. I got it looked at by a VW specialist and he said it could possibly be the bearings. Couldn’t book me in for another few weeks so I kept driving the car as it was intermittent. I dropped the car off to him last week so he could take it apart and inspect it and he came back to me saying the gearbox can’t be fixed and would need a new one. He put the gearbox back in, put new bearings on and new oil in but its 10 times worse now than it was before. My car is now knocking and the growling is constant. I’m really not sure what to do. I’ve had a few opinions and it sounds like he might’ve put the gearbox in incorrectly? I’m not an expert and I’m fully aware I shouldn’t be driving the car as it does need a new gearbox but the cars only done 55k and is 5 years old. Could anyone please give me some advice. Thank you Read more

Fingers crossed, I hope and also believe he’s right. Manual gearbox issues on this model aren’t common, in fact this is the first I’ve heard of. I’ll bet it’s something daft.

Hi

Can anybody suggest what this white deposit is on the surface of a Toyota dashboard? The deposit is usually visible on a cold damp morning. It disappears when the car warms up. The dash has been cleaned with detergent upholstery cleaner but that has not made any difference. It appears on the flat surface only.... Read more

I've heard about using peanut butter but never tried it, I have used heat from a hair dryer though to bring oils back to the surface on plastics, I've also used autofiness "revive " not cheap but it's brilliant.

I’m looking at my first car I’ve found a good deal on a 2007 golf mk5 with 70k miles the car is only £1200 as there is deep scratches down the right hand side of the car. I know having these professionally repaired would be very expensive but I don’t care about how the outside of the car looks would I be able to stop the car from rusting by covering the scratches up with ductape and a few layers of clear coat? A friend just had 'deep scratches' on a front wing and right-hand corner of front bumper repaired at a local bodyshop and that cost £600. (good quality job ,though, resprayed entire bumper and wing, perfect colour match).

My friend will now take more care in manoeuvres next to dry-stone walls....

I don't read the Telegraph but presumably the real HJ is only able to continue using his nom de plume there with the agreement of the new owners of the website. He registered "Honest John" as a trademark owned by honestjohn.co.uk ltd. When he owned the company he could give himself permission to use it anywhere but now it is not so simple.

Even more interesting, the company probably also owns the rights to that photo with the hat!...

On my 2008 Zafira, it was actual water, not just condensation in rear light clusters. I drilled a hole in the bottom of the light unit, having removed it from the car so you can't see the hole. In the past, I've had condensation in front headlamps and solved that by removing the rubber seal so air can get in passed the bulb holder. Solved.

Hi all,

Recently my friend clipped a car wing mirror in Bristol. It was parked illegally on double yellowd in a one way, single lane street. She chose to settle the matter with the person there and then. She gave him what he asked for (cost of a new wing mirror that the car owner priced themselves there and then). She didn't complain about the price whatsoever and was more than happy to try settle the matter without insurance becoming involved. She asked him how much would he be happy with. However, the car owner only asked for the cost of the part. She is worried they will get the insurance involved for possibly labor charges, cost of fitting, etc., plus there is no guarantees the other person got the part they were looking for at the exact price they said I suppose. She would have given him more had he asked she is that worried. When driving away the man gave her a thumbs up, thanked her for stopping and assured that it was the end of the matter. He was extremely thankful for her pulling over and tracking him down and not just driving off, so hopefully he can see it was a genuine mistake she has tried to fix. The car was quite flashy and £100 doesn't sound much for a 3-5 year old car. My question is, after a few weeks, would she have hear by now if a claim was put in? Again, she did all she could to rectify the issue there and then and surely the other person would possibly have the decency to get in contact if they did incur any other costs. I'm not very good at advising with these things so thought it is worth asking as I don't know what to suggest. I have tried reassuring as best as I can. She's only 22. ... Read more

Hi,

Thank you for the reply. If I'm right I remember her telling me some time back that she broke the back plastic of the wing mirror, but that the structural part of the wing mirror was completely intact. So the mirror apparently did not actually come off if that makes sense? Possibly the glass broke or at the very least the back plastic. She said she is unsure about the mirror due to how much shock she was in. At the time I am sure she told me in a phone call though that the glass was intact but would not clip back into the frame. She said her mirror bent his wing mirror all the way back the wrong way when they hit....
