This raises a number of issues, not least the (relatively few) cases of drivers who PoP out of genuine necessity/emergency, and those who live in tightly packed cul-de-sacs with the narrowest of pavements and who do not have driveways or garages. As always, it's the selfish/lazy ones (often on life or death missions involving cashpoints, the newsagent's or a popular chippy) who spoil it for the rest. It was only a minute, I had nowhere else to park, the car park is miles away, I have a blue badge but forgot to bring it, there's plenty of space to walk past, and so on.
It strikes me that the first measure should be to make abundantly clear all the places where it is actually permitted, as in Germany where many (usually wide) pavements have demarcated "park here" lines. A lot of wide pavements could be split into a 1.5 m or 2m wide strip for pedestrians and marked parking areas for cars. And then it's time to home in on the real offenders.
But at the end of the day it's a very crowded little island and there seem to be rather too many cars on it!

.... the road is not at all narrow. And yet people feel they need to be half off the road, presumably out of misplaced consideration for us residents.

Or perhaps they give a thought to the less common arrivals such as emergency vehicles, delivery wagons and the like ? It's not always just residents' cars.

So I can't seem to find a mechanic local that is willing to replace an engine in my 2010 Jetta 1.9 TDi and I am thinking on giving it a shot myself along with some friends. From googling it is the same as the Seat/VW/Audi variants i.e A3 etc

I would consider myself fairly handy when doing work on cars, but I have never done anything this big before. i.e i've done wheel bearings/hubs, suspension changes, radiators, differential changes, brakes along with the usual servicing.... Read more

It's not just the belt you need to consider it's also tensioner and studs. Buy a new kit that includes studs, tensioner and belts - false economy if you don't.

Put a new PD injector loom in whilst you are passing if you can - common fail as it sits in hot oil - really easy to fit if the engine isn't in the car. Likewise thermostat and temp sensor cheap and easy to fit at this stage. Obviously if you can get the bits!...

Hello anyone who reads this,

Took my Ford fusion in for injector seal replacement due to fumes in the car and a ticking noise. After being in the garage my power and acceleration abilities were reduced and had to jump the car in the days following the injector seal replacement. Took it back to the garage and my battery was somehow b*****ed and my turbo is now not working. They said there is some play in the fan inside the turbo and that is the problem. After already spending 400 on injector seals and battery they quoted me 700 to do the turbo. I'm not paying that. Crazy. How can it come out with more problems that it went in with?... Read more

Not to a Honda but have replaced digital speedo, odometer unit to a KTM Duke. Really easy just disconnect the battery first. Remove headlamp to expose wiring then it was just one multi plug connector which only goes in one way. A couple of screws to undo then job done.

Ordered direct from KTM dealer, who supplied one with the correct mileage displayed. No checks made, just told them the mileage over the phone so could have stated any mileage but hey I'm honest !

Why should I and the rest of the the tax payers have to contribute to EV owners with a £3000 grant. If you can afford a £40,000 - £50,000 car you don't need my money, the money would be better off going to support the NHS. Read more

We have a 2005 Corsa 1400cc ,Automatic which does 3,000 miles a year. VEL is over £260 a year and now increasing again. This car used up resources fifteen years ago. An electric vehicle uses huge amounts of resources. Check the costs of producing a ton of lithium.
For older vehicles this tax should be on mileage, imposed at MoT time. Maybe £20 a thousand miles.

A laudible aim in the long term, but...where do people living on older, narrow roads with no driveways or communal car parks park their cars?

The main reason why they park half on the pavement is so that other traffic, especially HGVs like delivery and bin lorries, fire trucks and ambulances to get by.

The problem has been that successive governments and councils have, for decades, never planned for or bothered to react to the enormous rise in vehicle ownership, especially in urban areas where parking hasn't been adequate for 40 years.

Until this is sorted out (which will take a LONG time, because you can't just magic up space to put them or find money for all the works), having a 'blanket ban' or just pushing the onus on councils is not the answer.

Planning law and the process for new developments has to be FAR more open and should have consequences for those pushing through developments with inadequate parking and narrow roads (as it is where I live) - including regional/national level 'officials' or ministers.

This should include reducing the need for cars by many other areas of policy by encouraging people to live nearer to where they work and where new shopping, retail and business parks are concerned, as well as far better integration of public transport. Read more

Another whitewash, well done Saul just the result we wanted, here have a knighthood.

Refuges too far apart at 3/4 mile (where possible) anyway and what the dickens difference will it make painting them orange instead of yellow, you can't see the things if in dire need because of the lines of lorries in the two nearside lanes at the best of times.

It would help if they had floodlighting over the refuges, more chance of finding one at night, and they need to be longer than the present dimensions, ideally joining them up to form a continuous safety lane:-) which isn't as daft as it sounds, no need to widen bridges because we can cope with a few hundreds yards of hard shoulder missing every few miles, its the present issue where a place of safety is every few miles instead.

The M1 Milton Keynes to Northampton section is nearing completion by the look of it, someone please tell me these new refuges are going to be constructed in all places stil under cnstruction whilst the chaps and the equipment and the endless cones are still in place...no i won't hold me breath for some common sense to be found among the mandarins.

My current car insurance policy ends at midnight April 6th. And would get me my first years of No claims. If I were to start a new policy with a different insurance company on the 6th. Would I be able to use that years of No claims? Or would I have to wait untill the 7th Before I can use it? Read more

Andrew-T

If you switch insurers, the new one requires proof from the old one of your NCB, which they then apply to the new policy.

Fans run on diesels when they are carrying out a regen of the DPF. Not 100% certain if your car has one but 2008 is on or about the time they were fitted.

Other than that it could simply be the car is running hot. On our old TDi the fan would cut in when we were in traffic yet the temp gauge would still be showing normal. Was told temp gauges do not move until its virtually too late thus mean nothing on a modern car.
