Hi all, considering the above model car for swmbo. Currently own a 06 plate 1.4 polo which has been faultless, but at 81k its getting a bit long in the tooth. Wifey only does about 4k a year if that so has to be petrol.
Does anyone have the above car? Any experiences? good or bad? anything to avoid? engine issues? common problems?... Read more
Hi, John, My jaguar x-type 2.2d auto (54k miles) was difficult to start, turning but not firing up on an intermittent basis. Read about egr and when I tapped it, it would start. gradually got worse and I'd have to strike it several times and pump accelerator pedal like mad. eventually took it to garage and explained to them I thought it was egr and why. they ran diagnostic and apparently high fuel pressure was only fault found. they took off fuel filter and told me fuel pump had failed and released metal filings throughout fuel system. They said there were no other faults. I was told that the pump and injectors needed to be replaced and remainder of fuel system cleared of filings. I was shown a tray of fuel with what seemed to contain a very fine 'glitter' like substance. I agreed. the result was £1800 bill. I collected car and I started it from cold next day, but it only went on third or fourth attempt. Then, after a short drive of about 1-2 miles, a new warning light came on - 'gearbox failure' with coil lights flashing. After a few trips back to the same garage, they eventually discovered there WAS a fault with the egr valve. They fitted a new egr (without advising me of the cost). Of course, I paid the bill of a further £200 because I need the car and all seems okay so far. however, my concern is whether it was just the egr in the first place and they jumped to the conclusion it was the fuel line and I've paid way over the odds and paid for work that was not causing problem.
Garage are saying there must have been two faults at the same time, and erg fault was an 'incidental' not sure if they meant coincidental fault.... Read more
At the time of taking your car in to the garage the EGR problem clearly wasn't showing up. They did, however, find an EXTREMELY SERIOUS problem with your fuel system. That swarf would have wrecked your fuel system and possibly the whole engine in pretty short order. I wouldn't call that work un-necessary
You clearly had two faults at one time....

Does anyone have any ideas why my starter motor keeps breaking. I have had 3 in the last three years. The last two times prior to it going we had a dash error STOP BATTERY LOW but when checked it wasn't. When we stopped the car and started again the error went and we had a new battery. So we thought it was just one of those things. Then a few months after the car wouldn't start. The garage said it was the starter motor and we were just unlucky we had got through so many. I mentioned this to a new mechanic and he said that it was probably the dual mass flywheel which would cost god knows what but when i looked this up i dont seem to have the symptoms for that to be going. The last starter motor was replaced about 6 months ago and so far we have had no problems but i'm dreading it suddenly happening again. I've looked for alternator symptoms on line to see if it could be that but again the battery and starting has been fine.
Is this a known fault with renaults? Read more
It could be worth checking that the correct alternator type has been coded into the UPC.

I'm currently driving a 2010 VW Scirocco 170TDI (55,000 on the clock) and am mulling trading it in for a new small car - as it's now our "second" car and not very family friendly compared to my wife's Golf (baby number 2 on the way). I'm only using it for the odd commute etc. - probably only 6,000 a year if that (and not as many long journeys as I used to, so worried about DPF or EGR problems creeping in).
I'm torn between going with something (hopefully) reliable and I suppose fairly dull (was thinking Toyota Yaris Hybrid) or something a bit different with a kick to it (e.g. DS3). Is there a perfect small car which is either known as reliable or with a long warranty, but can be specced with a quickish petrol engine (e.g. 0-60 in < 8-9 secs). I'm trying to avoid VAG cars generally, and wife refuses Mercs for some reason. Also not too keen on overt boy racer type features! Budget < £20K if possible.... Read more
The stand-out car for me is the Swift Sport, although I've yet to drive one but by all accounts, its simple design and non-turbo petrol replicates an 80s/90s hot hatch very well. If I could force myself to spend more than a couple of grand on a car, it would probably be my choice!
I don't like the look of it, it's plain rather than ornate.

Fast flashing with key in and ignition on means you got a problem.
Hello,
I have gone to drive my car just now and at the end of my street a couole of lights came on in red- the esp light and the power steering light.
My steering has gone extremely heavy- I wasn't able to turn car round just reverse it back to house.
It's just done 100k miles.
Has anyone had this problem? And will it be expensive??!
Thanks,

Make sure the charging system is working properly, and you have 14.4v at the battery with the engine running. Switch on all electrical loads and check to make sure the battery voltage stays between 13.5 - 14v.

One tip that seems never mentioned is if go gasless make sure the torch lead is wired to the earth ,you can look up the reason for this on YouTube , I bought a gasless mig from lidle 150 amp works a treat, I use 7.5 kg reels never had a problem !
Lol. Yeah! I've got a similar problem: wife has never been bothered about the car she drives, never been interested in performance as long as it gets her to work (hers never goes more than 20 miles away to work or her Mums or the shops). I cannot drive at the moment thanks to injuries sustained in a mountain bike accident, so since September she's had to do ALL the driving. This has meant driving my 270hp 9-3 on family trips. Suddenly she's "seen the light" and understands what performance is about and how it feels to be able to overtake effortlessly or acelerate down a slip road. So suddenly her C1 just isn't up to it and she wants something with ooomph!...
