January 2010
Since the cold weather started in about December, the car has been making a whining noise when accelerating. The noise is quite high pitched, and sounds like a Scalextric toy car! The whining noise increases in pitch as the revs go up when I go through the gears. This only happens when the car is cold, and goes away after a mile.
The whining is not heard in reverse gear.
Any ideas? A slack belt, perhaps?
Thanks

Hi - is there anybody out there who has an Avensis and been able to upgrade the built in Sat Nav from 'plain old street names' to also include 'Post Codes'? There must be a facility at Toyota to upgrade maps as and when, and surely if this is possible they can include a 'Post Code' facility.
Comments please - Cheers Nick (Wrexham) Read more
It should be possible to upgrade the software on these via an updated disk. But you'd need to buy it. Ask at your Toyota dealer.
Hello, I wonder if any of you knowledgeable people can help?
My car (57 plate Volvo S80 D5 Auto) is being serviced today, and I have been called by the garage to say the coolant is weak. Not low, just weak. They offered to drain and replace the coolant to the correct strength, for the sum of £40 (which in the scheme of the servicing costs by Volvo, seems OK).
Now what doesn't appear OK is that a two year old car should have weak coolant. I can't think it would have degraded from new in only two years.
It therefore seems to me that there are 3 scenarios:
1. The strength of the coolant was incorrect when filled at the factory
2. It was topped up with water, weakening the mix by the previous owner (who were the Volvo dealership)
3. It was topped up with water by me, during my ownership.
Now I can discount 3, as I know I haven't done that. I therefore feel that the cost of the replacement should be borne by the dealer, as they sold me the car. I shall be discussing that with them when I collect it (although not busting a gut over it, as it is only £40 - but that £40 is better in my pocket than theirs).
Before I ask them to take off this cost from my bill, can anyone think of a reason that the coolant level would be weak, that may mean I have to wear the additional cost myself??
Thank you in anticipation.

Ethylene Glyocol can cause severe rash if you don't wash it off quickly. Will certainly kill you if you drink it!
Recalling a news reoprt of a few days ago, where a bus slid into a ditch and the first police car on the scene slid off the road and hit it, I am wondering whether such vehicles have winter tyres fitted and, if not, is the reason financial/budget or something else ie not worth it in a normal winter?

I'll have to gat a book out when I'm at another place. Remind me in a fortnight if interested.
Hallo,
My wife's clutch has "burnt out", car has done 7,000 miles (new in March 09) and she doesn't "ride" the clutch whilst driving.
This is her fifth oir sixth car and it has never happened before.
Should a new clutch be fitted under warranty or do Saab have a way out by saying it is a "wear and tear" item so we will have to pay.
I certainly feel it should be replaced free of charge as there is no way it should be failing after this kind of mileage.
Dealer is contacting Saab to try and get it paid for but is talking of a cost of £1,400 if they don't agree.
Am also slightly worried that they will come back and say Saab will contribute, say, 50% as I will still not be happy with a £700 bill on a 10 month old car.
Any advice or experience of this matter would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Mark .Y.

I am looking to buy a 55 plate ST TDCI Mondeo. Had one before until someone wrote it off from behind.
However when I test drove this next one I noticed the front and rear heated window button lights came on when I turned the engine on. I have been told by the seller that this is suppossed to happen as automatically linked to the temperature. My old 54 plate ST did not do this (admittedly it is very cold at the mo)...
Is this right?
Also - any ideas why the heated seats wouldn't be working... what needs checking? Read more
It could just be the fuses- check the handbook.
I am no expert and if it is faulty you could always buy one of ebay.
The look on your face, I mean. A letter in one of today's newspapers refers to the the "patronising superiority" on the faces of 4x4 drivers in current conditions. If you're a professional, chances are the look will be one of concentration, maybe anxiety in the case of some elderly folk, or relaxed if you're on a pleasure trip. I'm told I tend to have a "severe face" - no particular reason for that .. perhaps a sign of being focused?

I do not like H-Fords... you do....... but as I said, I have to give them credit for the search function on things like batteries and oils.
Hello all. Need a bit of advice
Changed a wheelbearing in my mk2 and now i seem to have a warped hub. I have now decided that the cheapest fix is to write off the new bearing and get another hub assembly from a breakers. I have found one, but its from a 1.8. Just wondering if anyone knows if they are compatible, or at least any 1.8 owners out there, do the 1.8's have 4 studs on the hub for the wheel nuts.
Thanks

Hope some kind person can help!
In the recent extremely cold weather, when turning over my 406 I heard a nasty 'rattling' sound. The car did start but from that moment always produced this rattling sound when at lowish revs. The sound came from within engine btw. After a few days of this I left it at local garage to investigate.
They called me next morning to say that timing belt had failed when they had started car and that it was not worth spending £200 to replace as damage to valves was almost certain. (TBH I'm not certain how much faith I have in this garage... they have not been entirely honest in past)
Now just to backtrack a few years: the timing belt had been replaced only 26k miles ago by another garage (who I later realised had got just about everything wrong they ever did!) At the same time they had replaced head gasket and rebored new thread for spark plug that had popped out. I seem to remember them saying that when they first got the car running after their work it had a nasty rattle but they had fixed it. However ever since all that work, the car has driven with a serious 'flat spot'. (Don't know if ANY of that is relevant but I thought the more info the better!!)
Anyway, frankly money is frighteningly tight at the mo and I am wondering how best to proceed...
What really ARE the chances of the valves being damaged as a result of belt failing on car being started?
And I'm wondering if the 'rattle' was likely to be indicative of imminent timing belt trouble?
Other than the loss of oomph since the work by previous garage, this is a lovely, almost 'as new' car and I'd like to save it's not going to cost too much!
Thoughts anyone?!

Yes ChicksFan that was my initial thought, but having just bought a banger that has many problems I'm now thinking 'better the devil you know'. Apart from the timing belt and possible engine damage, this Peugeot really is very sound indeed, I've maintained it well for past 5 years and it looks like a new car too. My thought is that if there is engine damage I could just get the whole head replaced. The going rate for a head from a breaker is £120.
If anyone can answer any of the three questions I put in my last post I'd be very grateful. :)

No. Only when in gear.
Could it be a power steering belt? Power steering does not feel as responsive when cold.
