The look on your face, I mean. A letter in one of today's newspapers refers to the the "patronising superiority" on the faces of 4x4 drivers in current conditions. If you're a professional, chances are the look will be one of concentration, maybe anxiety in the case of some elderly folk, or relaxed if you're on a pleasure trip. I'm told I tend to have a "severe face" - no particular reason for that .. perhaps a sign of being focused?

Not to sure what you are getting at with ''NOT compulsary'' I know it isn't??
I do not like H-Fords... you do....... but as I said, I have to give them credit for the search function on things like batteries and oils.
Hello all. Need a bit of advice
Changed a wheelbearing in my mk2 and now i seem to have a warped hub. I have now decided that the cheapest fix is to write off the new bearing and get another hub assembly from a breakers. I have found one, but its from a 1.8. Just wondering if anyone knows if they are compatible, or at least any 1.8 owners out there, do the 1.8's have 4 studs on the hub for the wheel nuts.
Thanks

In the recent extremely cold weather, when turning over my 406 I heard a nasty 'rattling' sound. The car did start but from that moment always produced this rattling sound when at lowish revs. The sound came from within engine btw. After a few days of this I left it at local garage to investigate.
They called me next morning to say that timing belt had failed when they had started car and that it was not worth spending £200 to replace as damage to valves was almost certain. (TBH I'm not certain how much faith I have in this garage... they have not been entirely honest in past)
Now just to backtrack a few years: the timing belt had been replaced only 26k miles ago by another garage (who I later realised had got just about everything wrong they ever did!) At the same time they had replaced head gasket and rebored new thread for spark plug that had popped out. I seem to remember them saying that when they first got the car running after their work it had a nasty rattle but they had fixed it. However ever since all that work, the car has driven with a serious 'flat spot'. (Don't know if ANY of that is relevant but I thought the more info the better!!)
Anyway, frankly money is frighteningly tight at the mo and I am wondering how best to proceed...
What really ARE the chances of the valves being damaged as a result of belt failing on car being started?
And I'm wondering if the 'rattle' was likely to be indicative of imminent timing belt trouble?
Other than the loss of oomph since the work by previous garage, this is a lovely, almost 'as new' car and I'd like to save it's not going to cost too much!
Thoughts anyone?!

Yes ChicksFan that was my initial thought, but having just bought a banger that has many problems I'm now thinking 'better the devil you know'. Apart from the timing belt and possible engine damage, this Peugeot really is very sound indeed, I've maintained it well for past 5 years and it looks like a new car too. My thought is that if there is engine damage I could just get the whole head replaced. The going rate for a head from a breaker is £120.
If anyone can answer any of the three questions I put in my last post I'd be very grateful. :)
As the UK snow and ice melts people are already warning of shattered road surfaces and huge potholes appearing. The financially-strapped councils will struggle to do repairs, so are we better off driving 4x4s to tackle the inevitable 3rd world roads?! And if we did, the Gubbermint makes even more money from the motorist :-) Any conspiracy theorists out there?!
FWIW my 4x4 has rock hard suspension; they ain't all soft and wallowy :-( Read more

I started a discussion yesterday about whether to buy a W208 or W209.... I was perusing auto trader and ebay, and found i quite like the c class sport coupe... I will have 7k to spend, will this be a better buy than a CLK?? Does anybody on here have one?? Read more
If you want a Merc, get an E class or above or leave alone and go BMW/Audi.
We had a lot of C-classes on our fleet, and they aren't really a very durable or well made car especially for the price.
Hi, Since finding this site only a couple of weeks ago I have found it to be a fantastic place to come for advice and info. So I call on your judgement and advice and opinions once again...
Buying secondhand, I appreciate is always to an extent a gamble...and I appreciate that as age goes up and price goes down, perhaps individual cars and their care received is more important than a particular make/model reliability index...So here goes...
We are average. 2 adults, 2 children (well, one and one on the way). We are fed up with struggling to get a 2 year old in the back of a 3 door punto...and soon we'll have 2 kids to struggle with.
We both have poor back...so like the 'higher' ride of an MPV...
So, we could possible stretch to £1500...maybe even 2k if it would really provide optionsp. But WHAT MPV? Or should it be an estate. (Nissan Note would hit the mark...but far out of price range....)
Scenics...read everywhere how 'bad' they are for reliability/fire risk etc. But still like them.
Nissan Tino...1.8s and high tax so seem costly...also reliability issues.
Picassa...reliability issues, and probably too expensive?
Merivas? Zafiras? Mazda Premacy?
Everything I read has downsides or scare stories and I am getting confused! Any advice...? Baby arrives in April, so clock is ticking! Cheers all.

I'm going to second a Mondeo III hatch. You'll get a tidy one in your budget. They are roomy and very very easy to get kids in/out of the back seats due to their wide opening large rear doors. They are also very easy for those with bad backs to get in/out of the front too. Comfy seats and excellent driving position again helpful to backs.
Sadly MPVs in this price range are often tired and poor value for money.
hello.i have a isuzu bighorn it is an import, what happened was were driving down the a30 duel carrageway and all my warning lights came up.fuel light oil sensor temp sensor timimg belt all of them...also at the same time my blowers stoped working including air con.the digital display doesnt even work now.i have taken it to several garages and they dont no what the probelms is.one said it was the alternator which seemed bit strange.250 pound later with fitting.no difference.had all relays and fuses checked by auto electrictian.any help please Read more
I seem to recall there is a link between the alternator charge circuit and the functions that have been lost.I think there is an engine run relay in the o/side engine bay electric box that is energised when the alternator starts to charge. This completes the circuit to the blower and w/lights.hth

I have just got off the phone to my local Honda dealer to ask the price of a Honda Accord 2 litre petrol ES saloon.
The ES is the base model with 16 inch wheels and standard suspension. All the other models come with sports suspension and 17 inch(or larger) wheels.
After trying the sports suspension i decided it felt too firm for my tastes and so opted for the smaller wheels and non sport suspension.
Anyway i digress.
I have been told that there are no ES models that i can order and the factory are not even producing them.So even as a factory order i cannot get one!.
The only option now is a second hand one or pre-reg model(which are very scarce).I cannot believe that Honda advertise the ES and yet you cannot buy it.
What do you guys think? Read more
Not without precedent with Honda, they list (or did before the recent facelift) a current model Civic S 5 Door (n.b. not the S-type 3 Door), poverty spec without aircon, no integrated radio and steel wheels sans trims. I've only ever seen one example (funnily enough in one of my company's carparks). The model is not even described in the brochure or website but does appear in the price lists.
Me too.
