Hi,
My Astra 1.4 will not start, when I turn the engine over it will fire if I put my foot right to the floor and keep the starter motor turning, but it will not rev up and start and stops firing if I take my foot off the gas and when I stop turning the starter motor it's dead. Even an RAC man when called out could not identify the fault.
I hope a motor repair Guru out there can help me before I loose it and scrap the car, but it's only got around 60,000 on the clock and the engine when running is sweet. Read more

My daughter's clio has knackered engine due to cambelt failure.
Since new valves are £25 each, and I've no idea how to check if the old ones are bent I have decided it's probably cheaper and easier to replace the engine with a used one.
Can anybody tell me if any engine code beginning D7F will do or does it have to be from a MK2?

For example I've seen an ad for a 1.2 8valve '95 but with unknown engine code Read more

There are a number of cylinder head refurishers on the web:
www.cylinderhead.co.uk/

www.ivorsearle.co.uk/

And these who I gather do a really good job at rock bottom prices: lockstitchuk.co.uk/

or.... just type 'exchange cylinder heads' into Google.

Hope this helps

I'm considering buying a Ford Focus. I've been looking at nearly-new examples and have found one at a Ford main dealer near London. They say the car is a Ford Direct model. I asked if that means it had been a daily rental in its former life, but the salesman assured me not and gave me the usual speil about it having been used by a manager at Ford.

I'm not convinced, as the sheer number of Ford Direct cars available at any one time would mean Ford UK must have hundreds of managers putting thousands of miles on these cars in just a few weeks and then starting again.

The model I am considering is an 09 plate with 3500 miles on it. I'm not necessarily adverse to it having been a daily rental in the past, but I would like to know before committing to buy.

I've not seen it yet - I'm going to take a look at it over the weekend. What is the BR's opinion about it having been a renter and how to spot it?

Hello all!

Can anyone help me, pleeeeeease (and sorry for the long explanation)?

I have a 2002 52 Reg Mondeo 130 TDCI Zetec with 150k on the clock and FSH. It has never given me any problems except for a new water pump and power steering pump at about 140k and new rear sub-frame at about 135k - all in all, costing me over £1k.

Even throughout this cold winter/snow we've just had, it has started first time, everytime.

Except for this time...! I went to start it after leaving it overnight, when it turned over but never fired up. Then one of the orange lights started flashing (I describe it as the 'glowplug looking light'). It keeps flashing now.

No matter what, it wouldn't start and white smoke poured out of the exhaust.
Quick call to my mechanic followed and based on what I told him, he thought it was the glowplugs, so told me to keep turning it over until the engine caught, then get it to him. He said the white smoke was unburnt diesel.

I did as he said (maybe my biggest mistake!) - engine eventually fired up, but ran 'lumpy'. As I drove up the road, I could her a loud-ish knocking coming from the engine. Lumpiness cleared a little and there was no power (limp mode?).

First, glowplugs etc were checked, along with other things, then the injectors were taken out to be checked - apparently, no problem with them.

Now, the garage is saying that a 'conrod' has possibly gone and to sort it, will be an expensive engine-out job (estimated at £1k not incl. the work done so far).

Soooo, a few questions to you experts out there:

1) Does this sound like the right diagnosis?
2) Does the rate sound 'ok'?
3) Why has this happened - have I done something wrong?
4) I really don't know what my car is worth, so is it worth keeping (probably a silly question bearing in mind the clutch has never been replaced so far, I need a new auxillary tensioner thingy-me-jig plus a new set of brake discs, pads and a service!)?
5) Is it worth buying a second-hand engine?

My partner and I are expecting our first baby, as well as trying to buy a house plus trying to buy her something reliable to drive - so while I could get a another car, cash flow is not great and I'd rather not unless I'd be stupid to put more money into this one!

Sorry for so much text - I just hope you guys can help!

Thank you all very much,
Tony. Read more

I have a friend who works at Dunton, he did quite a lot of work on the injection systems on these engines. They were known as twinbox, the system was made by Delphi and are c***, he spent most of his time trying to find ways of programming out faults to get dealerships out of the guano and the warranty period. I am in no doubt your problem is injectors, as i am a cabbie and witnessed the same problems on many of our circuits mondys of the same year. has anyone done a leakback test ,or cleaned the E.G.R. valve out, the best people to talk to are united diesels, they wont b******* you and do a very reasonable recon injector set with a warranty. I wish you lived near me i have a small garage i use and they realy know there stuff [ walk on water] . It realy sounds injector try and find someone with a decent fault code reader with up to date software, if it was engine damage it would run lousey all the time, trust me i have sat behind to many of the 02 mondeos being gassed while i waited for a fare, when the injectors are on there way out they always run to rich before going the same way as yours.

my 1994 caravelle took offence during the very cold weather and refused to start without being jump started, and even then she took ages to go, since the warmer (ha) weather has come back she still starts, sometimes first time, whereas yesterday i had to jump start it. today was the same, first time turned over but didn't "catch", then as i try to start again it's draining the battery.
there is only one click when i allow the glow plugs to heat up, if it doesnt start first time, i don't get another click from the heater plugs, and it instantly drains the battery when i have to keep turning the engine over, does this mean my plugs or the relay is at fault, don't fancy the job of putting new plugs in but if needs be.
or could it be the battery?
none of which have been replaced in the time ive had it,and the plugs are possibly original knowing the previous owner. the van is now around 125,000 miles so it's still got lots of life in it yet and i'd like to be able to rely on it! once it's started it'll not do it until the next day. my husbands diesel did this and it was plugs hoping it's the same....??
any help would be much appreciated.

wondering if the starter could be on the way out too, every so often the stater sounds like it's jamming, the bushes may be on their last legs?

Hi all, my grateful thanks to forum users who advised me where to buy car mats for my Focus (eventually bought from Dagenham Motors in Stamford Hill, north London.)

Hope you can help me with the following: This morning I noticed that the cover/door over/outside the petrol cap was missing, presumably because someone has broken it off. It is nowhere to be seen, so I assume it has been stolen. Just to be clear, this is the round cover/door outside the petrol cap, which is locked when the central locking is on (which it was) and is the first thing to be opened in order to get access to the petrol cap.

At the moment the petrol cap is not completely exposed because there is a black horizontal piece of plastic (a kind of 'secondary door') which is still locked (is this part of the cover/door?) covering the cap. (However this still leaves a gap at the top and bottom - similar to the logo/symbol of the London Underground.)

The car is a black Ford Focus LX 1.6 petrol, 2006 06 reg.

In case any of you have experience or knowledge of this issue:
1. Where's a good place to have the petrol cap cover/door replaced? (does not have to be new). (I live near Wood Green, north London, but can travel if the place is good/recommended.)
2. Any idea of the potential cost? (Insurance is not an option; £400 excess!)
3. My MOT and service are due within 2 weeks - any advantage in having the petrol cap cover/door replaced at the same time?
(4. Less important question: do you think whoever did this wanted the cover/door itself or access to the petrol? Has this happened to any of you?)

I would be extremely grateful for answers to any of the above, especially recommendations for where to go for a new cover/door. Many thanks in advance, Chris Read more

Hi there

I have the same problem with mine wondering how to go about relpacing it...

Hi, My girlfriend's considering a brand new Smart on the scrappage scheme. The question I have is should she go for a diesel or not as they have the dreaded DPF. This seems a strange thing to fit to a car destined for short urban journeys. How long would the car need to be driven for at speed to regen the DPF? Also, does anyone know is the warranty 2 or 3 years?

Many Thanks

Hi L. At the risk of complicating matters, if you have a spare PCI slot, you could add a card which will add 4 USB 2 sockets to the back of your pc. It's dead easy, honest! For example; tinyurl.com/yc6398q Other models are available. I've seen one half this price though I didn't recognise the manufacturer's name. I checked Maplins - £18 for just 2 sockets :-(

I have a Western Digital 500GB external drive which has served me well for about 3 years. I'm not saying what I paid... :-( But that was 3 years ago!

Thank you for the link. It will very probably come in useful! I understand how some vehicles are engineered without a thought for maintenance access, but that really IS the worst place I've seen to put a fuse box....
