My HDI has come back from having a new timing belt fitted and has no power. Living on an island and only having done 25k miles to date all at low speeds the garage says that the engine is cartboned up. The car was good when it went in and had no power when it came out they spent days looking for the problem and now want to take the head of. I dont think this is the problem as I would expect black smoke.
Also the engine does not respond until the accelorator pedal has been depressed more than usual and then picks up more slowly even when stationary.
They assure me that timing is not the problem as they have rechecked this.
At the same time as fitting the timing belt they cured a gasleak on one of the injectors but took all of them out and replaced the seals Read more

Hi
Where can I purchase an exhaust gas analyser? I am looking for a DIY one. Are there any available on the open market?

Well, with LPG you should have a fairly homogeneous mixture with little cylinder to cylinder variation-so that's one problem you shouldn't have to deal with. How are you going to test the mixture under load? Cleary, A 3000RPM idle isn't the same as 3000 RPM WOT. To be honest, I'd be tempted to look for obvious faults in the system, but I'd leave the mixture alone. I don't know if rich mixtures are used at WOT (there's no in-cylinder evaporative effect to cool components like petrol) so I don't know what fuelling map is used.

Hi all

Had my rear brakes and discs replace on Saturday, drove away and thought the car felt a bit underpowered. I thought it might have been because I had the kids and their car seats in there (which isn't normal).

This morning I drove my empty (apart from me) car and there is definitely something wrong. I have to accelerate harder and the car is lacking power.

I thought the brakes might be stuck on but they weren't glowing red hot when I parked, they were hot but I had just been coming up the motorway.

I just went out to the car park and tested the hand brake and noticed that when the car is rolling forward I do need to pull the lever quite a long way before it stops (suggesting it might be half on-ish already).

Is there anything I can check to confirm if the handbrake is stuck on or if it's the pads rubbing?

Many Thanks!

Walking home from the shops today I saw a DVLA liveried van driving thru the estate, together with signage on how to report an untaxed car. It was a Transit with a big roof-rack on it and what was clearly an ANPR camera mounted at each corner, at 45 degs to the fore-aft axis of the van. I hadn't seen one before. Are they new or have I just missed them?

your comments are worrying , do you you think that some polish drivers are breaking UK laws?

Is it OK to use VW Longlife III (5W30) oil in my Citroen 1.6HDI? I have a few litres left from my old car, and I'm too much of a skinflint to buy any more unless I need to ;-) . The specs look similar, but my handbook is in German so I can't tell if I'm missing any small print!
Thanks

Probably, but I've not tested it and I suspect nobody else has. Why risk it - the VAG oil is expensive, so if you sell it to a friend at a good price, you can get the correct oil for your PSA engine and not lose out.

It's hardly worth the risk - if there were to be an incompatibility with seals or other components in the engine, you would regret it.

No cheating. Guess before you read.

I must say I love Slough - it's the home of my biggest clients. Other than that though, I think Betjeman had the best idea.

I hope you folks can help as your last resort before handing over lots of cash to my local ford dealer (who is not very good by other accounts)

I have now had 5 alternators in 18 months. My local mechanic (who is a star and very honest / reliable) is at a total loss to as why my car is eating these things. He has managed to get 3 of them on a warranty as faulty units (which he thinks they are not faulty when fitted). We have looked at earthing problems and discounted battery (new one) and are now looking at the "smart charge" system and ECU fault, even though ECU reader has indicated no faults.

The things die in the same way, battery light comes on, battery puts out 12ish vaults under load and refuses to increase to any more than 12.4 vaults. Once my mechanic said it looked like there was fuel in the alternator but this was a one off (possible fuel leak from pump?)

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Dave. Read more

Well, a month down the line and alternator still works!

Thing is that i have to keep the car over 1200 revs for the first 15 mins of the first trip of the day or battery lights comes on, quick turn off / on and light goes out and is fine. no idea why i have just learnt to live with it!

I used Broadspeed back in October 2006 when purchasing a new Toyota Corolla. They referred the enquiry to Autobytel.co.uk - which is the internet arm of Inchcape Retail.
Absolutely no problems with the purchase.
Broadspeed used to get their funding by earning a commission fee from the selling dealer, and now, I believe, charge a fee to the customer for making the introduction should a sale go through.
This year, when changing the Corolla for a new Auris I went to Autobytel directly. Again, absolutely no problem with the purchase.
Used the same Inchcape Retail outlet for both purchases - Inchcape Toyota, Burton on Trent.
