This confirms the view of a Policeman that I know - he likes these messed about number plates as it makes them easier for the public to remember.

Defending solicitor...' It was his youth, immaturity and incompetance, etc '....Rubbish ! It was a vigilant member of the public and a good bit of detective work by the CID.
What a turnip !

Why does the report name the witness?

It's hard enough to get witness to come forward for anything nowadays, so the BBC make it worse and name him! Fair play to the chap though.

To use your own car with personal number plates in a robbery.... a plonker indeed. And thankfully he was because they caught them.

And have they seized the car and number to be sold to repay the proceeds ???

That number must be worth a few bob!

...Why does the report name the witness?...

It doesn't.

The witness named is from the council's highways department who was able to say the drain cover put through the bank's window was the same one taken from the road.

So he provides the evidential link between the cover being nicked and it being used in the robbery.

Otherwise, the robber would only have to admit nicking the cover, since there doesn't appear to be much evidence at the scene to link him to the robbery.

I thought genuine cast iron drain covers were being nicked all the time, for their scrap value. How was the drain cover expert able to identify this particular cover? Do they have individually cast reference numbers, and was he able to match the number with his records?

It's hard to take this story seriously. He sets off in his highly identifiable car, knowing he needs to smash a bank's toughened glass window. Does he take s suitable sledge hammer with him? No, he just hopes something will turn up on the way, and by chance, there's a handy drain cover. I suppose he'd previously checked that it wasn't the kind that needed a special lifting tool to retract the locating prongs.

Cliff,

You might not say that if you were one the security guards threatened by these thugs, or, for that matter, if you were starting a 10-stretch for robbery.

Can't say how the drain cover was identified, but we have to assume this guy was properly advised when he pleaded guilty.

That advice would not have been forthcoming unless the evidence against him was pretty good.

It may be the drain cover was but a small part of the overall case, but that aspect was picked up by the press because it was unusual.

J4 MES is currently advertised for £165,000. I wonder if he "allocated it to himself", which would have made him (slightly) harder to trace.
