easiest way to confirm is by finding out if a decent large factor can supply a new end
try and get somebody who knows the job rather than the tea lad to help you

Right then, our VW Touran is one year old today. And it is in for its 1st service, at just over 9000 miles. Time and distance regime.

Booked the car in 5 weeks ago, received text confirmation of booking along with reservation for a courtesy car. All good. Yesterday, received a text reminder that tomorrow is the day. Bring licence and insurance for courtesy car. Excellent, well done Mr Dealer.

Arrive this morning at Service Reception. "Mr B**** here, got my Touran for you to service." "Oh really?" he says. "No record of the booking on the computer, sir." So I showed him the text messages, and a slot was freed up for me somehow after 10 minutes of tooth sucking. Then, of course, I remind service man that I have reserved a courtesy car. Ah. Could be a problem. 10 minutes of running around and a reasonably nice, clean VW Polo is produced. That'll do the job nicely, thank you.

"OK, Mr B****, the invoice will be £150.00 on collection. See you later", they say. "We'll call you when it's ready."

"Oh no it won't be £150.00", says Mr B****. "When I bought the car, we got three years servicing thrown in, included in the price. Also, can I check the contact number you've got for me?" Turned out the mobile number spat out by the computer was completely wrong, despite me having received text messages correctly from someone. Also, my home number was wrong.

So more faffing about to check my story. Do they think I'm stupid and will just cough up? I distinctly remember questioning whether the service department would be aware of the free servicing when the time came, when we bought the car. Of, course all assurances were given at the time, but come the time there has to be a hullabaloo about it. And where they got the random phone numbers from, heaven only knows.

So, all in all, it took absolutely ages to drop the car off, when it should all have been easy, and listed on the computer when my reg number was tapped in.

All is sorted, but I really do begin to doubt the ability of a dealer to do a proper servicing job if it can get its admin so badly wrong.

Two more free services, and I think the Touran will then be getting swapped for a Mazda 5. And I'll be checking the condition of the oil filter when I pick it up.

Sorry smokie, that was my way of trying top put a stop to it. It's hard not to respond to such blatant hypocrisy.

hi My friend has the KA, for the last week when she drives in open spaces there is quite a horrific what sounds like a wind noise - this sounds as though it is coming from the the bonnet area near to the bottom of the window. (Sounds like a very loud hoover!) in built up areas there is no noise, there is also no feeling of air/wind coming through the screen, & it makes no difference if the vents are open or closed/ heater on or off. Does anyone have any ideas of what this may or may not be? Thanks Read more

Breams

hi, this has been tested and made no difference. Her husband has now looked at the vehicle & he suspects a perished rubber washer round the bonnet prop stick... replacement washer will prove if this is what is causing the noise

My old runabout has stopped "running about"!

1992 Citroen ZX 1.9D will not start

Battery? 8 hours charge and still will not even turn over. Absolutely silent when you turn the key

Battery Light on dash stays on "all the time" even with no key in ignition

Only thing I did just before this fault was replacing the alternator/power steering belt but it did start fine once afterwards?

PLEASE HELP

Hi all, I have a 2.5 V6 Probe which came to a standstill last Friday. The engine cut out, wouldn't restart, the headlights went their separate ways, the main beam dashboard light came on (even though all lights were off), the left indicators came on permanently but as a sidelight (no flashing) and it was all accompanied by a strange intermittent buzzing.

The AA man got it started by adjusting the steering column angle and turning on the sidelight switch. It ran fine as long as I didn't activate the indicators, which acted as a handy 'kill-switch.' It then gave up the ghost again 25 yards from my garage.

The garage mechanic disconnected the battery and left it inside over the weekend. On Monday he went to examine what he and the AA man thought must be two wires rubbing in the steering column somewhere, reconnected the battery and hey presto, the headlights readjusted themselves and the car started first time, no problems. The diagnosis is therefore that water got in somewhere and then dried out over the weekend.

Is this a known problem with a known remedy? If so, where are the water traps and where shall I liberally apply gaffer tape and bathroom sealant to prevent this happening again?

I noticed that the fuse box in the N/S engine bay was making a buzzing at the time of the problem, so maybe this could be a lead culprit?

OK, thanks for that, I'll have a dig around. There's also some moisture in the O/S boot corner which I guess won't help anything!

Have just bought an Audi Allroad. Really happy with the car but took it in for an Audi inspection and it turns out the brake discs are 70% worn at the front and 90% worn at the back so I need a new set of pads and discs. Audi have quoted me something like £1000 which seems very steep. Anyone know where I can get this done much cheaper?? The independent dealer offers a 3 month parts a labour "warranty" but when I spoke to them, all they said was "bring it in and we'll have a look at it".....my concern is that they'll just do the bare minimum and I'd rather the job was done properly. How it passed to MOT I'll never know! Read more

Also, if the lower near side suspension links are said to be "knocking", what parts do I need to order? Thanks

Rolls-Royces were nearly all Silver Wraiths in the fifties, until the S1. There was a model for the US market called the Silver Dawn though, an R-Type Bentley body with a Rolls-Royce radiator grille (and perhaps just the one carburettor). It was sold with auto either as standard or as an option.

My vectra engine management lights keeps coming on. Had diagnostic check which said lambda sensors. Put 2 new ones on thinking it was ok, then same problem light came back on. The weird thing is it only comes on when you do 80 mph. Can drive all day long under 80 mph and light wont come on but when you go over 80 the light comes back on and seems to be when you start to brake from 80 mph it comes on instantly. Any suggestions?

It is doing my head in. When it comes on i have to pay another 40 quid to get it took of again but diagnostic came up with no faults only for the 2 sensors that i changed before. Any suggestions? cheers

I've heard lots of nightmares about Fiat dealers, and we don't buy them any more but know of a good dealer. We bought our '86 Uno new from a place not worth mentioning but then found out about a brilliant Fiat dealership in Newport (S.Wales) that is still going.

Best Fiat experience (at Newport dealership):

The car had been cutting out without warning, but would always start if you left it for 45min or so. The dealership duly investigated, replacing possible causes in order of being cheapest to replace. After a few weeks, the guy helping us (one of the owners himself) pulled a distributor off a used Uno, saying that was the most expensive possibility having ruled out everything else. He told us to drive the car for a week, and the problem was solved. Upon return, we were told to try it for a bit longer. This went on for another 3 weeks to be sure before he then ordered in and fitted the new part for us. He was apologetic when he told us he'd have to charge us 30mins labour... after all the time he'd spent with the car. If I ever decide to treat myself to a white 500, I know where I'll go.

Most odd/memorable Ford experience (local Ford dealership):

A couple of years later, my father had a key cut for my sister's Escort. Key wouldn't work, so my father went back for a refund.

The girl behind desk wasn't sure she could give a refund; "that's no good to us now"!

... Wasn't very much use to us either, was it?!
